Switching! 4/24/24

The day started great and I thought my plans to chase to train all day would be fruitful but it was not meant to be! The clouds came in with the wind and the rain followed. I started down the highway but the dark skies and rain made me decide to abort my plans -again! I am hoping for a better day tomorrow-Thursday!

Sounds like some very happy robins in the background. We've got more robins this year in Rhinelander than I've ever seen, glad to have them back. The climb up the hill never gets old, enjoyed this one much. Thanks Nancy!

Sad news today-three miles of rails that haven't been used for years is being abandoned-from L'Anse to North of Baraga. Reall bummed out about this!

@@nancyhaun Baraga to Lake Linden used to be cool to railfan. It was a treat watching a SOO Geep or F unit taking a train across the Portage lift bridge. I figured this would have happened years ago but still sad to hear. CN sold the line here in Rhinelander to WATCO and the service is better. CN made it clear they wanted out of carload service to focus on unit and intermodal. There was some ill will toward CN here after they said that. Hopefully they won't get rid of anything else.

Thank you for documenting the switching moves of the L'Anse Local in L'Anse, Michigan on 23 April 2024, Nancy! The crew had to switch out all the empty cars from Koppers and CertainTeed before they could deliver the loaded cars to both companies. I noticed that one of the loaded cars going to Koppers was a former Chicago & North Western green covered hopper car that we saw at 23:57. The current reporting marks on the car are MWCX. We could see the change in the weather that you mentioned in your description of the video. You started the video with sunshine and end it with a thick blanket of clouds with the look of rain in some of the clouds.

@@nancyhaun I agree. In the Chicago area on 23 April 2024 our high temperature for the day was in the mid-60s. On the 24 April 2024 the high temperature was in the mid-40s. Tomorrow the 25th we will have a partly cloudy day with a high temperature around 58. Today a north wind was coming down the length of Lake Michigan. That was one reason we had the 40 degree weather.

Well, it looked like a beautiful day again, until the end of the video! Then it looked like it does when the gales of November come thru. I don't know what shade of Gray Yellow looks like to you, but I'd say Krist is getting E-85 pumps by the Yellow handles on those nozzles. I had to mow grass today Nancy, and this was a real treat to come in and plunk with my two 11yr old baby doggies on the couch to watch. I didn't count the cars, just sat here and vegged for a few minutes of peace and tranquility. The U.P. just puts me into a mind frame of easy going and enjoyment. I really enjoyed the video, but didn't come back to comment until later. Also Too, no Mosquitoes yet, just them there little tiny Black BITING flies that buzz all around your head and try to get into your eyes, mouth and up your nose! Thank you lady, and a big thumbs up! ben/ trolling under the bridge.

Thanks Ben! I'll be coming below the bridge next Thursday! Gonna visit with family and get some train action! Sad news here-the rails that go around the head of the bay are being abandoned!

Quite the train of empties. has CN ever had a car of old ties catch fire? CPKC had five cars in London Ontario catch fire on a train. suggestions are it was arson.

Great video Nancy! Hey I am curious, does the trains ever go through L'Anse & continue north? I looked on aerial photography and noticed that north of Baraga, the tracks are no longer present. Do the trains ever go to Baraga? I don't think I have ever seen you film that. Appreciate the info in advance. Keep up the good work!

The tracks go just North of Baraga but they will be taken up this year as they are abandoned.
