If he had had an engineer as the person he was trying to explain the functions to, this would have been quite a different conversation: (this refers to the content given from 0:00 to about 8:00, so the P-split) - a transformer is not made from a magnet and wires but from a material of high permeability and wires (not magnetic core). Plus the required shielding, of course (MU-metal) - you do not have to have two amps to get a ground loop. It is perfectly sufficient to use a crappy grounded power supply for your pedals. (he touched that one, granted) - "it is not about the level, it is about the impedance". Yeah and this is why this thing (P-split) cannot change the impedance since it is a passive device. It is basically a 1:1 DI box. "And because there is a transformer, the output impedance is not given by the interface". In fact, it is. The output impedance that is feeding the amp is the same impedance that the audio interface provides. All the p-split can do is prevent hum issues. Don't get me wrong: Lehle products rock! I have recommended their products multiple times in the past and NEVER had a problem with them, but explaining stuff technically inaccurately or wrong because the person you are talking to does not have a clue about electronic engineering might make the company look less professional than they actually are.

A really interesting video. No disrespect to Captain, but it illustrates how impedance (as opposed to resistance) is largely misunderstood. The thing about impedance is that it is an active combination of resistance and reactance in whatever circuit the signal is exposed to. I use the phrase 'exposed to' because "passes through' indicates a lack of influence in a circuit. It also indicates the sheer quality of thought put to use in Lehla's products. Hats off to them!

The thing with buffers is not explained in a practical way here. Here is why you need a Buffer at the very beginning of your (true bypass) signal chain IF YOU ARE USING ANY OTHER ACTIVE DEVICES, OTHER THAN YOUR AMP: If you use a fully true bypass chain, that DOES NOT MEAN that there are no Buffers! Thats the thing! It just means that WHEN YOUR EFFECTS ARE BYPASSED, your signal is not buffered. But as soon as you turn one of your Effects on, it will automatically apply some sort of buffer to the signal (there is exceptions, but the majority does), since it needs it for it's operation. And all of a sudden, you have a buffered signal! As we have heard in this video, the difference is quit noticeable. That is the point. You can not avoid buffers anyways, so it is best to put them right at the start, since turning true bypass effects on and of makes no unwanted difference anymore.

Hi everyone, sorry I don't speak English well and I need help, I have to switch two heads on a single case Speacker ..; - Which pedal do I need? I have a looper A / B; but - The signal of the final amplifier is different from the guitar / effects signal, isn't it? - here a common loop / switch can be fine to manage (alternate) the signal between the header/amplifier and the speaker case !?? Guys, pardon me if this is a stupid question: But do i have to drill holes into my pedal board to mount the P-Split? It seems the 4 black screws on the top wont allow for velcro on the top. And the 4 raised feet under the P Split also dont allow velcro on the bottom I'll like to get 2 to mount under my pedalboard for a 3 amp rig. Please advise. Thank you! : )

It will fix ground loops that happen when you have more than 1 thing connected to the mains in your signal line. If you have pedals powered by adapter, place one of these between the last pedal and the amp input. Or place a stereo one for the fx loop in and out. Try to use it on short cable runs as you're disconnecting the shielding/earth at one end. Also try to remove any EMI emitting devices or shield them. Things like phones, wall warts, computers, cfl bulbs etc.

I actually have a Sunday Driver, and it definitely helps with tone -- especially when long cable runs are needed. My problem, though, is I have 14 different pedals that I've been told must be the first pedal in my signal chain to sound right. In addition to the Sunday Driver, I have a BK Butler tube driver, that is supposed to sound best accepting a pure unbuffered guitar signal. Then there's the Cry-Baby Wah ... same thing. Then there's my OD pedal, same thing. There is only one cable coming from my guitar. So do I follow the advice here and hit the SD Buffer first and then deliver a buffered signal to these other pedals (against other advice that they get an unbuffered signal), or do I run those pedals in front of the Sunday Driver against the advice here??!!! I currently do the latter, but this guy seems to suggest that my SD is not doing anything in that case but acting as a clean boost in that scenario. But that's the decision I made as a matter of the pure "ear test."

I agree with the captain. Buffers vs true bypass isn't really an objective thing, it's subjective as to what sort of sound you like. Some buffers in some pedals increase the high end, some suck it out (e.g. cry baby wah), so it really depends on what sound you're going for as to whether you use buffers (whether that be in a pedal or just a stand alone buffer)

I own several Lehle devices, and while the devices work great, the explanations of how they can be creatively used, is a marketing disaster. For example, on the D-Loop, the documentation does not ever say if the Buffer function comes before or after the loops. For example there is no example of how to configure it to hook up a fuzz-face pedal. Basically, the products are superb quality, but the user has to figure out how the hell to use them, despite the instructions. It escapes me how Lehle fails to exploit the fact that their products afford a way to switch signal routing without song-specific programming, which is the actual scourge of most programmable switchers.

You might have missed it: Manual, first page, "General description", point 1: "When the buffer and both loops are on, the signal firstly passes through the buffer, then through Loop A and, finally, through Loop B." Have you ever been in contact with us or just wrote here?

Yeah, Wadsmitter is right. It's not 'dumb,' but the idea that it is best to always have true bypass or buffers are bad, or whatever. All that is nonsense because, well, tone/music/sound is relative. But, as Wadsmitter has stated, there are practical benefits of it. Germanium lyf.
