I'm about to purchase a Tascam Model 24 for a project studio. I don't care about EQ as I will be connecting to a DAW. I like the look and feel of the Model 24 as opposed to the plastic feel of the others in it's class. I really like the large red REC arm buttons. The only drawback I see is only 1 AUX sub. Both are analog mixers with A/D & D/A at the front end, so software update can't re-route the PCB hardware. The only other unit, now discontinued, that is analog but able to switch pre/post Comp & EQ is the Behringer UFX1604/1204, as well as 8 inserts for the first 8 channels. My current mixing desk. Alas, only 2 stereo return from the PC, compared to 14 or 22 for Tascam models. So no hybrid mixing. Model 12 does support pre/post Comp+EQ, since Model 12 is digital and not analog mixer.

The Tascam Model 12 is basically what everybody would want. It is not just a smaller version of the Tascam Model 24 but has a lot more features. To my ears the Tascam ris more reliable if your thing is clarity of sound and freedom. I record classical music and I am on a budget and I think for my purposes I would go with a mixer that doesn't limit the sound. I get it it makes it punchy and warmer, but because it actually colorates the sound because of the saturation. I know other analog mixers preamps can be driven quite hot for the effect it gets from saturation, but I think it has to do with the limiters and them being on the path. Anyways, thank you for your video. I am not sure if I would get to buy one but I am definitely considering the Tascam Model 24.

Great video! Just bought a soundcraft. Quick question. The first feature of the tascam you mentioned that was a big reason for switching was the control room outputs. Hi guys, I have a question about the soundcraft, can you record post eq? I mean that any change you make with the eq and when you record will it be recorded? or is it just pre eq?
@DarkWindowRecs3 жыл бұрын
Great video. I'm considering getting either one of these 2 mixers. When you did the sound comparison into the DAW, did you use any eq on the soundcraft? Or is the soundcraft naturally more saturated/ generous with the mid lows? I can see how that can add a nice flavour to the overall sound, but I use synthesizer and drum machines and I prefer a more true sound without added colouration, and I dont often use a desks EQ unless I really need it (this is because most of my synths and drum machines have EQ of some kind built in) and as the Tascam sounds a little less coloured than the soundcraft, would I be better going for the Tascam? Or is the saturation due to the XLR inputs? I use mostly trs/line inputs on mixers so maybe I wouldn't encounter the saturation using the line ins?
@SoundcastStudios3 жыл бұрын
The soundcraft is a little more colored. I wouldn’t think it matters if it’s xlr or line since it runs through the same path. If you want clean the tascam is cleaner

The EQ is different for the stereo channels as you can create phase issues sweeping mids on stereo sources . It's a deliberate design rather than a cost cut : -)
@SoundcastStudios3 жыл бұрын
The soundcraft has sweepable mids on stereo channels and I was just acknowledging that
@mgmg1163 жыл бұрын
This isn't an excuse, just using EQ at all (even on mono sources) causes phase changes in the signal, because EQs use phase in order to function - the entire foundational approach to EQ is built on constructive and destructive interference. Just taking a look on Plugin Doctor, you can see the phase change from just a tiny bit of EQ, even on mono sources Adding an additional link in the signal path on every channel strip would add up very quickly in cost, so it was definitely done to keep the price down. But Soundcraft and Tascam could easily have just had two mono channels or a single stereo channel with a link midway through the signal path to allow EQ moves to be recorded post-fader into the DAW. Technically, you can just solo the EQ'd channels one by one and record the mix bus output of the mixer within your DAW, but thats a pain in the ass

I was attracted to the Tascam because of its’ looks... but never knew it was so limited! @@SoundcastStudios let me see if i get this straiight. You can adjust your eq going in from desk to daw, but you can only record the eq'ed signal if you record it from the master channels 23/24? If so, whats the point, that means if you want to track with eq for several tracks and do simultanious recordings to the daw, then you cant as all tracks would be printed as a stereo track through the master. In that case I don't see why I would need this hybrid model vs old analog desk going through my UAD arrow which also only has 1 stereo input??

the Tascam has a noise floor like an cassette recorder. 1 mic, your okay, plug in 6 mics, and it just a sandstorm. Good luck trying to record with it. The 8 hours I spent randomly pressing buttons, changing everything on the board, then inside in the box with a band sittimg around getting bored. Random tracks just don't record, the sound is cheap. The store took ot back after their return period when i showed them the issues. Just horrible. Get the soundcraft. I sold my gear to get this piece of trash. I had 12 channels recording at once with zero noise or problems with an adat connection from an ID 44 before the damn tascam.
