Yeah, most people take 4 years (or more) of English in school. The German and French sides actually prefer English than to learn the other language, so people tend to have very good English. ...and very funny, wonderful German.

As a native English speaker living in Switzerland, I can tell you some of them speak better English than me and my mates growing up 😂. Ok we have a direct and use slang words. But still grammatically the Swiss correct me in English 😂

It's not true that swiss people speak all five languages. We speak either german, french, italian OR romansh (some probably speak two) and we all learn english at school. There are also a lot of foreign people who have another mother tongue. That makes only two/three languages that we speak :)

It would indeed be quite impossible for you to speak Swiss as there is no such a language. What you mean is the Swiss variety of German or Schwiitzertüüsch. We also speak Swiss French and Swiss Italian in our country, not to mention Rümantsch. Following your logic, the Swiss from the French-speaking part of our country could also say "I speak Swiss", and ditto the Swiss who speak Italian. There fore, there's no such a thing a the Swiss Language. How's that for a Mythbuster, uh?

Just don't be rude as an american traveler. At least try to give it and effort. If you just say "Grüezi" before you start babbling in english, it makes you a lot more sympathetic.

sg94er I don't know if you're swiss. Because the suggestion of saying "Guten Tag" is not swiss at all! Guten Tag is very german and we swiss people are not that fond of the german. And I'm speaking from experience, you can say Grüezi in every german speaking region of switzerland!!! And Grüessech is actually something only people from the region of bern say. (Berner Akzent)

Almost no-one in Switzerland speaks Romansh. This includes those who speak Romansh as their native language. They are a very small minority and they start learning German (or in some cases Italian I guess) very, very early in their lives. No offense to any native Romansh speakers. But all of them know more than just that one language.

+Aharon Fernandez The reason nobody speaks "Swiss" is that there is no such language. "Swiss German" is an umbrella term for the dialects of German spoken within the German part of Switzerland. I can speak my German dialect that only exists in the region in Switzerland I'm from perfectly. I can speak Standard German perfectly. But I don't speak anything "in between". There is no "Standard Swiss German". I you want me to speak some other form of Swiss German I have to try to mimick someone with a dialect from another region in Switzerland. The expression "Swiss" to refer to a language is ridiculous.
