Billie is kinda guilty too tho. In Lydia’s post, she writes “everyone in his band, crew, family and his manager knew that we were seeing each other”. If that’s true, and I think it is, that would make Billie Joe complacent. When you know your 22-year old son is in a sexual relationship with a 16-year old girl, you should do everything you can to stop him, and he didn’t do that

Ben Lee I’m not saying I don’t believe her. I’m saying her wording isn’t specific enough to blame Billie for anything. Billie is NOT responsible for his ADULT sons horrible actions. And even if Billie did know, he really couldn’t do anything to stop it because his son is an ADULT!! If we really want change we actually need to make sure the people we cancel are deplatformed and not just given more attention. Like I said the *only* reason don’t like the word being used in this context at all is because in Lydia’s statement she explicitly stated that she wasn’t trying to cancel anyone. They got me fooled. Although I think I’ve always had good intuition... it seems weird to be constantly preaching stuff that they clearly had no idea about. As a young woman, and a visible minority, I don’t need people like SWMRS posting the crap “woke” stuff like they did. It’s all to be cool and gain supporters. Sometimes keeping your mouth shut makes you more genuine than being outspoken. I’ve kinda forced myself to like SWMRS and bands associated and felt bad for not agreeing with them. Now I know I was right lol. Trust your intuition. The Regrettes are one of the only bands from the scene that make genuinely good music and I’m not just saying that because Lydia is in the band

They blocked me on twitter around the time their Berkeley's on Fire album came out 💀 I basically called them out as rich white boys who only got to where they were cuz of Joey's dad (BJA) and they were awful for taking radio time from Badflower who struggled for years to get air time on the radio. They hated to hear it and now they got called out for being the fake, "woke" privlaged boys that they are. (It was a twitter poll from a radio station page asking who should get air time. Mind you, Badflower was winning until Joey went on insta to tell their fans to overrun the poll.)

Thanks for as usual having such a level-headed response. I’m not into either of these bands or that scene and all I saw yesterday was about Joey Armstrong being 22 and Lydia being 16 and then of course your typical twitter woke girls calling for his head and I was like eh that’s certainly a questionable relationship but not career-end-worthy, but I didn’t know the history of them positioning themselves as a ~woke feminist~ band or turning their fans against the Regrettes and yeah that’s scummy. In that case with how they market themselves I think yeah, it’s appropriate to go public with something like this. In a lot of other cases I wish they would just keep it between the people involved though, I’m getting to feel like I can’t get into new music because somebody is going to eventually come out against the a band member and I don’t want to put myself through that emotionally because I get very attached to my fave bands.

Read Lydias statement, it's not just the age gap. Joey pressured her into sexual acts like giving him oral sex and facetiming him when she was in the shower. He also manipulated her by guilt tripping her every time she pushed back by reminding her of all the opening slots and career opportunities he was giving her. He's trash.

So, I’m not as informed on this whole issue to feel any type of way about this except disgusted at Joey’s actions. I still enjoy SWMRS songs, they are good at what they put out music wise and I’m never one to just avoid someone’s or some band’s songs just because they or a few members of their fucked up. Despite that, I really hate how Joey dated a minor and moreover, have the guts to abuse her in any form of way. I’m definitely not going to support them if I ever get the chance to, I’ll just stick to youtube whenever i listen to their songs.

I have to disagree with you about not putting them on a pedestal. I don’t exactly think you SHOULD put an artist on one but as people we have a moral right to expect other people to do the right thing. Your point almost makes it invalidating for us fans to be upset about the situation. We do not expect people to be perfect, but we SHOULD expect people to not be predators/bystanders to abuse. And fans in this situation have a total right to feel betrayed on it. It’s a little gaslighting to tell fans in this specific situation to not put artists on a pedestal. That’s not on us. That’s on the band manipulating all of us.

parasocial relationships really have led to a messed up culture. i disagree with your take on “cancel culture”, because if it was a real thing then people would genuinely face consequences and i’m sorry but i so very rarely see that actually happen. men in their twenties who seek out relationships with teenagers are doing it because the power dynamic is so prevalent. they know what they’re doing and i just don’t trust them. we need to protect these girls and make it obvious that this isn’t okay-sixteen being the age of consent in any state does not mean it is suddenly morally fine for an adult to seek out a relationship with a teenager.

I 100% believe Lydia and support her decision to speak out because that’s one less shitty, toxic band to follow. i’m disappointed, really, because I thought swmrs, a band local to me, was finally the one all-male band that didn’t have creeps or toxic fuckboys. their message and vibe was so refreshing and progressive and I felt good about supporting them because they were just what the scene needed. obviously, this turned out to not be the case, and makes me less likely to trust any band (esp. all-dude bands) with a progressive message going forward because you can never truly know if they actually practice what they preach. it sucks when bands I like get exposed but i’m glad to have the information so I’m not blindly supporting pedos and rapists. Joey’s statement today was so gross too because it was dismissive and ignorant of the issue, just more reason to quit supporting them.

I am very late, but I want to express my opinion about this event with the awarness that I personally don't Know that really happened between Joey and Lydia. I am not shocked about the age difference, because in Italy it's common to see people with different ages have a relationship. Love is love, but only if there is respect and true feelings. In this case is clear to see a lack of these elements, that was an unhealty and an unequal relationship. I support Lydia and I think she really thought about this relationship and I believe she was very brave to share it publicy. If what she said is the truth, it will futher proof that the way people appear not always is like they are inside. I perfectly know Joey is Billie's son and even if Green Day is my favorite band, that information mustn't be used as a justification for his reckless behaviour. I don’t know but this thing is not getting off my mind. I’m just so so disappointed because the band and their „values“ meant so much to me. I have been to their show in Frankfurt in 2016 where the regrettes were the supporting band. I came across them that way. According to what Lydia said this has to be exactly during the time the abuse and „relationship“ happened which is hard to think about because I can recreate the evening very detailed in my head and also because Lydia is my age.

fuck man this one pushed me over the edge. like i just want to stop feeling unsafe all the time. it's exhausting. some men dont seem to understand that if you do anything to make a girl feel uncomfortable, you are doing more than causing discomfort in that one moment. you are piling up on a long list of creepy experiences she's already had. sometimes it's just another creep in your DM's. sometimes it's more and there's unwanted pictures (i was 13 the first time i got one of those). sometimes it's a man in public staring at you while jerking off. sometimes it's years of an abusive relationship. sometimes it's a drunk guy ignoring your tears and ignoring the word "no." and now it's this. finding out a band i loved, a musical family i considered a safe space, is just as fucked up as the rest of them. im so sorry lydia. im sorry i supported them. thank you for being so brave.

I'm still shook with what happened. I get what you are saying about not putting them on pedestals. However, bands should do what they preach. I admired them for how talented they were and have gotten to know a few of them throughout the years. For me, I didn't put them on a pedestal, but I'm still annoyed. Artists are human as well, so we should treat them like anyone else. I've been a fan since 2010 and have several photos with Joey and all of the band. Honestly, from my few interactions with the band, I can see how this all got pushed under the rug. Just... wow. It's been a few weeks and I still haven't put all the words to my feelings.

Agreed. We shouldn't place bands or any other public figure on pedestals, but at the same time it should be _expected_ of them to not be gross! There's a fine difference between someone who said something stupid and learned from their mistake (which face it, we've _all_ done that), versus someone who flat-out commits a felonious act and makes a half-assed apology that is so transparently obvious they only made because they got caught.

This one hurts the most. I live in Oakland and have been to 4 of their concerts because I genuinely liked their music and what they stood for. As for the Frights and Mikey, oddly enough there was rumors of him around Oakland and from Gillman for years saying that he was with underage girls, not sure how accurate the multiple girls rumor was, but now we know of one. This scene is really terrible and I hope this shows the power dynamic these bands have over their fans because at this point you just never know what people are capable of.
