These openings, the riffs, The Chug Project, thats the class you need to teach at Petrucci's camp...sit on stage with your guitar and your laptop and explain how you do it so well...writing a great riff is a real art.

I just came across the camp a few weeks ago, yeah it seems expensive but then we have to remember that all those artists need to get paid, they're not only teaching but also performing, doing signing etc. I think it would really be worth saving for to attend one of these camps. What a oncer in a life time experience that would be!

I went to Vai Academy in 2019. It was expensive but oh boy, I loved every minute of it! It was packed with invaluable lessons, and on top of that every participant, no matter the level of skill, got to personally play with Steve and his band. What an amazing teacher he is! I agree it’s worth saving to go to one of those, instead of for example buying another expensive guitar or an amp. Highly recommended!

Just wanted to let you know what an inspiration you have been to me. You and I are similar in age and obviously Dimebag is a huge influence on both of us, along with the other billion folks inspired by that amazing talent. You have inspired me to pick up my guitar at get back at it. You the man Ola…for real. Thank you for what you do and how you do it.

I watched an Anthrax show when they were touring for sound of white noise and I noticed that they were using a backing track even back then. It was playing the songs but at a lower volume I guess they were using it as a guide for the set.

On the issue of backing tracks, the first time I saw Entheos, at a Beyond Creation gig, they had vocals, guitar, bass and drums in the 4 members. When I saw them earlier this year, opening for Archspire, the bass player wasn't playing bass anymore, but rhythm guitar! The bass was all pre-recorded backing track. I wasn't sure how I felt about that at first. But, of the four bands that played that night, Entheos were second best only to the main event in my opinion. So a bass backing track didn't affect their performance, though I'd prefer to see a person playing the missing instrument, given the choice.

Well, Entheos original bassist (only studio bassist for them now), Evan Brewer, is the best one in all metal genre, so he's tough to be replaced. Have seen Fallujah with Kilian Duarte and he's one of a few I can think of to fill Evan's shoes

Ola hopefully next time you go back to the Petrucci Guitar Universe to teach some stuff! Don’t sell yourself short, you have more to offer than you probably realize. Your songwriting is amazing, your lead phrasing is very unique and makes your solos really stand out from a lot of other metal guitar players. Same with some of the things in your rhythm playing. I love the humbleness but man you’re a great guitarist. If John Petrucci himself thinks you’re good enough to teach at his clinic then own it!

Somehow I missed this SWOLA. What the heck. Sick opening riff Ola. Tone is subjective, and John Petruccis tone and how he sees it is not dirty enough for someone like me who's heavily influenced by Metallica, Stevie Ray Vaughan, first three Godsmack albums, Zakk Wylde, Jerry Cantrell, Billy Gibbons, Sabbath, Sepulatura, and Dimebag, i prefer a dirty raunchy tone that allows me to shape it in different ways with my playing. "Tone is in your hands, the amp just lets everyone else hear it" that's a quote from Stevie Ray Vaughan, and it's a truth that I think too many guitarist forget about now a days. Awesome SWOLA!! Take care man.

The last time I saw Lacuna Coil was when Marco Zelati was ill and they used a recording. It wasn't that big of a deal since they play with synth tracks anyhow. What I appreciated was that they re-amped the bass, which definitely made it feel more natural.

I saw Thirty Seconds to Mars a few years back and after waiting three hours for them to come on stage (if memory serves me correctly) they had vocals and drums on stage, everything else was a backing track. They afforded to put loads of rappers and photographers on stage with them though. Was so bizarre. Maybe some were aware of the state of the band but I had no idea and couldn’t quite believe the shite I was watching

Keep doing what you are doing, much respect. PD I just bought the purple sustainiac guitar on friday, I was waiting for it to be available for a long time, its like you read me mind and designed a guitar exactly like I wanted (Well, maybe add a killswitch when you update that model) Hope one day you come to México and sign it!

What about a band like Polyphia if they used Chino's recorded voice live? They can't take him on tour for 1 so g. That's just not realistic. They're not going to pay 14:13 a singer to go on tour for 1 song either. So that means they'll never be able to play that song live. Why is that good?

On backing tracks: There is a right and a wrong way to do it. I once saw a band known for dual lead guitar harmonies, but all the lead guitars were on tracks while both guitarists played rhythm. That sucked. On the other hand, I always come back to see Periphery whenever I can, even though they almost never bring their bassist their shows are still amazing.

Regarding use of tracks- some of the most fun shows I've seen were by Powerwolf, great showmanship, all real instruments always sounded tight and their interactions with audience are some of the best I've seen. But that band doesn't have a bass player. One of guitarists records bass in studio, but during live shows they play bass from track. Honestly, I wasn't even noticing that there's no bass player, until someone mentioned it. They output so much energy you're not feeling like something's missing and that's all that matters. Band likes their current line-up and don't want to add extra member and respect their decision. Another example is a band I've been listening to for about 15 years or so, small german NDH band called Ost+front. I've seen them live once and, well, their vocalist likes to add a unison vocal track to his live singing for parts he can't pull off live confidently. Yes, it felt like half-cheating, but then they also did a really fun show and that small aid for vocalist didn't ruin my overall experience. And speaking of NDH, Rammstein also plays some harder vocal parts from track, it's a known fact. And when Till had a lightbulb in his mouth the whole song used pre-recorded vocals. But they still put god-tier live shows. On the other hand, I remember leaving some shows kinda emotionless even though there were no obvious cheats and everything was played well from technical standpoint but just band was a bit boring, they would just stand and play without any audience engagement. It's probably a me thing, some might go to shows for different reasons, but to me live shows are about building this IRL connection between band and fans. And bands succeeding at that is more important to me than them playing perfectly or not using any cheats.
