Do note that while the portrayal of unarmed martial arts and shooting (including gun-fu) has GREATLY evolved over the last 20 years, the sword fighting in movies has not changed the least bit for like 50 years. It still employs the same overused to death cliche moves and atrocious speed. The stuntsman establishment needs a shakeup!

In the narrative, Jon is a great swordsman, but he doesn't start out that way. He gets to be regarded as the best swordsman in the north, on top of all the opponents he has defeated, but he clearly learns from all of them and grows over time. In the latest season he really loves up to that reputation. Can't say much about how realistic it is though.
@TheBoxingCannabyte
@TheBoxingCannabyte 4 жыл бұрын
yeah id say the TV Jon Snow is nearly as good as Prime Jamie Lannister by the end, well-deserved too. The opponents he defeated are far more impressive than any Jamie ever defeated with the exception of.....god dammit, forgot the guys name but either Arthur Dayne or Barristan Selmy were stalemated by the guy at one point, I Think, and Jamie was just fending the guy off....oh yeah that was it, the guy wanted Arthur Dayne's sword (not The Darkstar), he was considered as mad and as dangerous as The Mountain, though not as strong.

With the speed he does it at (by book) compared to the game, almost nobody would have the time to react, let alone find and use an opening. They are nearly unstoppable before potions - and even harder to kill with them. Geralt killed 7 people alone in the Blaviken incident, and the only time he got cut during that entire fight was when he stalled because he didn't want to kill the leader, Renfri. www.reddit.com/r/respectthreads/comments/4bdb5u/respect_geralt_of_rivia_the_witcher/?st=iwxmnmux&sh=b0515586

Geralt's techniques are the most realistic I've seen in pop-culture and are somewhat feasible in a real life situation. But it's still got lots of spins and useless twirls. But also bear in mind that Geralt has insane speed and reflexes, and he mostly fights beasts than man, so his techniques might as well be the best. Looks cool though.

Though really no one can 100% fight like either Geralt or Aragorn as they both technically have superhuman speed and/or stamina. (Geralt, for example, has a fighting style that could only be pulled off if you were Spider-Man or Captain America, or mid-tier Vampire, like Buffy-level vampire to Underworld-level Seline). because of the spinning and whatnot.

Gonna have to stop you right there, Jon is a decent swordsman according to the books, not exceptional, but he isnt bad, and he aims to become better, after becoming the lord commander he begins to train furiously with his sword, believing that the exceptional steel needs an exceptional swordsman, but this is not to suggest he was a slacker. We know he, at the time of getting to the wall, was better than robb, but not as good as the half hand, but after that point it becomes increasingly hard to tell just how good he is because all of his fights are skewed in one way or the other. That being said, i appreciate that you arent holding back on game of thrones fight choreography, its frustrating to see all these HEMA instructors on youtube giving these fights a pass because "its just a tv show", which is the kind of attitude that will ensure our western martial arts are never respected.

(Apart form like, a hundred close range techniques) 4:56, I love how you can’t avoid refuting yourself and I am really happy you added that tidbit. Too many art forms love to display this “deadlock” scene where the two fighters talk over interlocking swords, but most people (if not everybody) who are familiar with weapon arts can’t comprehend why the protagonist is not bashing the pommel or cross-guard into the opponents face. :)

This is less of a rhetorical question than it is a genuine one. Why has Hollywood refused to create realistic choreography? "So the audience can tell what's going on" is an awful excuse. It's far more interesting to watch genuine sword fighting than the caveman humping they do in other medieval shows.

I think it's a lobby thing. The established stunts coordinators (who are honestly clueless about swords) say that THIS IS WHAT IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE and the producers believe them. Because they are, well, established.

***** That doesn't explain why the stunt doubles are equally awful. Also, I bet there are actors who would risk some minor blunt trauma if they could achieve massively better presentation of combat. Keanu Reeves and Tom Cruise come to mind.

I will say that this sounds like a very SCA-inspired response, Connor. If it's choreographed, it is very easy to ensure that you preform your part safely so long as you have the training and the awareness of what you're doing. It's only when untrained or disrespectful combatants come into play when the risk of severe injury comes into play. In my humble opinion as an instructor, anyway.

I wouldn't generalize and blame what is essentially just a place where various filmmakers gather to make movies. Because of this, various things can happen. It's not like there is a boss who controls all films and dictates what must and mustn't be in a film. What can be blamed are studios and individual filmmakers as they can have power to call the shots. Just thought I'd share my thoughts, buddy.

Final thought: When critiquing fighting styles in movies, TV shows and maybe even video games (probably the hardest), do you factor in the choreography needing to look a certain way for dramatic flair, camera angle shots, or them trying to convey a certain emotional buildup in the scene? Or are you going in for a purely technical analysis? Because maybe you could do both, that would be a really cool video just to see how you break a scene down, and bring t othe table what you would do if you could choreograph said-scene

By his own admission he's not that good, actually. Whenever he comes across a legitimate swordsman he gets trounced. Iron Emett regularly bests him and Mance (literally) beat the shit out of him. Someone like Selmy or Brienne or the Hound (or Mance if he was trying in earnest) would kill him in about two seconds.

When it comes to stage combat, films, theatre, opera you have to remember one rule - rule of health and safety. When I was on the stage providing background for a fight and I asked instructor to strike me once as it look like in the real fight he didn't knew what to do. Rules of Health and safety (especially in UK) are big - the real HEMA fighter would lost his nerves (lucky for me, I know no other way to use a sword but love to watch your channel )

I agree with all the points as an amateur swordsman who doesn' know nearly as much as you do, but I think we need to keep in mind these people are actors and very few have the time to pick up the skills necessary. Western martial arts needs a HEMA star that can act like how eastern martial arts got Jet Li, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, we need guys like that, with star power to make something great. I do think Henry Cavill does a great job as Geralt given the fact it's virtually impossible to show a Witcher's sword movements (he's probably at Drizzt or Artemis Enteri-level dangerous and you can only do their movements animated or with specialized choreography)

I honestly think Jon is supposed to be in the top-5 by the end of the series. He could go toe-to-toe with anyone (though Frankenmountain he would need his wolf). Jon has a fuckload of courage, longclaw, by the end of the series he could take or stalemate almost anyone. Plus he obviously has plot-armor haha.....Seriously though I think he's a good fighter, on paper. Choreography may be different, im an amateur swordsman (barely starting to learn, got a bastard sword and some training swords, a foil, etc.)

This is why I roll my eyes at so much of hollywood. My friends and family tell me "it's just a movie, it doesn't have to be realistic" but when you see the real thing and compare it to the movies, the difference is often too great and breaks the immersion and makes it difficult to fully enjoy. Thank you for this video. Now I have a visual way to show people what I've been talking about all these years.

That happens when people who know about real Fencing watch TV/Cinema productions :) as I did not know much, I could tell that is is "wrong", but now... its to clear for me! How should I now watch Game of Throwns without keep an eye for the bad fighting? :D Good video, really liked it!

In retrospect The northerners have probably never seen or even heard of the skill of swordfighters like Jaime Lannister or Ser Jorah.So,Jon Snow's skills are pretty advanced for them.The 'greatest swordsmen' the North has seen are Ned Stark and a few others,in contrast to the actual knights or fencers in the south who trained in very much different methods and other weapons which are more complex and advanced,again,unlike the north.

It's a show and they portray the character as a good swordsman not by great technicalities of sword fighting but by actually making his opponent terrible at fighting, as every single action movie does. No matter how good you're as a swordsman, you'll be killed if placed in jon's place in the battle of bastards and against the wights (season 7). Bottom line is, most of the action movies are no way near realism and it's by far fine and acceptable to me. BTW the analysis of the sword fighting was totally logical and the flute between the video is just perfect.

Man, such a long "I know it's just a movie, guys" intro with even a good "triggered" justification for why it's worth criticizing the actor's performance anyway, as well as a reminder in the middle of the video, and yet somehow there's a bunch of people in the comments section upset with you criticizing the swordplay. I'm amazed.

Realistic, as in historically accurate? Probably Captain Alatriste.

I love your videos. So glad I found your page. You know your shit! Quick question: Do you think the fight between young Ned Stark and the Sword of the Morning was atrocious? Other than the guy dropping his shield and the ol' attacking-him-one-at-a-time thing... did Sir Arthur Dayne's actor seem like a decent swordsman despite the obvious mistakes?

In the books Jon Snow is considered a great sword fighter. Not for any technical reasons, of course. Just because he was trained in the same ways a Lord is trained to fight. And when he goes to the Night's Watch, he's training with people who were criminals with no experience. And he is portrayed as smart, too -- He took control in the Battle for the Wall and fooled the enemy's advance by ordering his men to put dummy targets up on the wall to get the wilding's to waste arrows on the wrong targets. Of course, the TV series is totally different and Kit Harrington is just kind of the actor they got, greasy curly hair and all

I think it would be kinda cool if you could create a short choreographed fight scene that would be based more in real swordsmanship, probobly a lot of work but just throwing the idea out there
