Sword & Sorcery - The Review

Sword & Sorcery is a cooperative adventure game for 1-5 players that plays in about 45 minute per hero.
"Five heroes awoke from the dead and were made immortal to save the kingdom from the rise of darkness. In Sword & Sorcery - Immortal Souls, up to five players control one or more of these legendary characters brought back to life by powerful sorcery, to fight against the forces of evil, controlled by the game itself.
Heroes grow stronger during their story-driven quests. Along the battles, they acquire soul points that regenerate their souls, restoring their legendary status with multiple powers, magic and soul weapons, and powerful artifacts. An innovative A.I. system allows the control and management of enemies by the players, giving them intelligent behavior and creating interesting battles every time, with no Game Master required.
There is no player elimination - when a hero dies, he becomes a ghost soul, an ethereal form able to use its unique ghost shout against enemies, and then he can resurrect spending Soul points at the Gods altar."

I agree that the replayvalue is not so high, when it comes to scenarios. But..... in my point of view, playing the game with different heroes is the replayvalue here. In this game the heroes felt so different, awesome! Best crawler out there!

It is still challenging to replay with new heroes but more quests would have made it perfect.

Thank you for the review. That sounds a complicated one. I'll do consider it when I'll turn into a heavy gamer, with time... If I may, I must wonder out load - Why is this game doesn't rated at all in your bgg scoring table of games. (even if you don't own it - 1. I do see 'Dead of winter: crossroads' as another rated game which you don't have. 2. why don't you own it really?) Plus, speaking of your scoring table, it is an oportunity to ask why does 'Pandemic' rated 5 with an addition link to a review which ends with an overall score of 8.75...?

Honestly I am terrible about keeping my BGG profile updated. I used to try... but ya.. failed miserably. Pandemic is a great gateway game but these days I am bored with it. Great for new gamers though. Sword and Sorcery, Ares and I had a pretty big disagreement and I no longer support them as a company in any way. I do own Sword and Sorcery.

Play Fate Core instead. It's a cheap game to buy and you can buy a lot of adventures to it for a low price. It plays nearly everything and it's very fun to play.

My go to RPG that isn't 5E is Beyond the Wall and other adventures best "I don't have time to RPG" Rpg that is out there. Highly recommend.

I really like Arcane Portal's bad guy. The sculpt is really nice too and once painted it will get 2nd duty in a DnD campaign I am running 😎

I don't have all of them. I like the Balrog one a lot but it is also extremely short at only 4 adventures and stops you from leveling past level 4. Act 2 is good and very worth it. So arcane portal decent but short, darkness falls great, vestyrous lair I have no idea.

@@whitmanft This is very doable. The game doesn't have any hard and fast rules on how to create quests but it is pretty easy to do so with some work.

Got this game pretty much for the parts. If I can get friends together for an RPG, it needs to be simple like HeroQuest.

Heroquest does have a really good beer and pretzel vibe. Also check out Dungeon Saga which should be having a new edition this year (not a sponsor, not paid to say this, and I deifnitely have no info about the new edition! :) )

And thats not all. They have a FaQ page on their website and a special forum on geek. The rule book should have been bigger. So many things will come in play that are unclear. BUT dont worry. Its not hard. Just big. I enjoy it. Its awesome

Does this game seems linear? I'm torn between S&S and Folklore: the Affliction.

Yes. While your allowed to make decisions they are more for theme then actual full fledged game play changes like you would get for example in Descent. Each mission has some minor changes based on narrative choices but you are still playing similar missions each campaign.

I would rate folklore and Darkest Night as really good alternatives. To be fair Ares Games really aggravated me so I would tell people to steer clear of this game until they improve customer service. Folklore and Darkest Night are games I would suggest over this game.

If we did the Thunderdome "2 games enter 1 game leaves" then yes Mage Knight leaves a smoldering body in the cage as it walks out. Yet these are 2 very different games and both stay in the collection. Thanks for watching!

@@ChRiStRiDa7 sorry, thunderdome is an old 80s movie reference. It was a large done where 2 fighters walked in and only one was allowed to walk out alive. So if I could only pick Mage Knight or Swords and Sorcery I would pick Mage knight because it has more replay in the box. 7 adventures is really short sadly.

If a game needs a lot of scenarios to be replayable, that's a failing of the game imo. Most board games have only one way to play them.

For competitive games sure but for a cooperative game that is a dungeon crawler 7 "plays" total is a travesty especially as easy as scenarios are to write compared to everything else. This is why Descent ships with 20 scenarios they also realize this fact.
