Swordfish 101: How To Rig A Harpoon

If you are learning how to daytime swordfish, then you must learn how to rig a harpoon. Part of your daytime swordfish set up needs to include two harpoons. We highly recommend not going out unless you have two harpoons because when daytime sword fishing, you never know the size of the fish that going to bite your hook. The last thing you want is to have the fish of a lifetime and you cannot stop that fish with one harpoon. There have been many times that we have used two harpoons when landing a fish. On our boat, we run two “Skurge Of The Sea” harpoons attached to 1,000 feet of line with a jug at the end.

A little bit confused. Maybe I am missing something here. Understand that without the loop trick, dart can go backward through the shackle and harpoon can be lost. However, with the loop tie to the shackle/harpoon, how can the line goes through the shackle freely and allow the fish to run? Thank you!

Yes! The line will run freely through the shackle and the harpoon shaft stays on the line. This is what you want, you want the harpoon shaft to not be attached bc if it is attached it can pull the dart out. The fish can run and the line will be coming out of the basket on the boat.

No that prevents the line with the dart from coming out of the shackle. If the line were to come out, you lose the shaft. The fish is running and the line is running through that shackle keeping the shaft loose on the line.

@@pescatarianfishing still doesnt add up. So you saying all 1,000 feet of rope needs to pull through that shackle while you hold the shaft? And when you get to the end with buoy that doesnt fit through the shackle, then what?

Yes, the rope is attached to the shaft so that you don’t lose the shaft. If a fish dumped all your harpoon line, the buoy would go into the water but everything is still attached together so that you could retrieve everything.

You can use this method for any fish that you would harpoon. The harpoon method is exactly the same.

This is very similar to the way my pa rigs his gear up too. But we like highflyers, theyr heavier bigger easier to see. He also likes to grease his dart tip as well just incase it seizes, seen people lose fish because of that as well

That is actually a very good idea! I like the grease on the tip! That is very true, it can get seized and not pull off. We put grease on the thread but I’m going to have to take your idea and add some behind the dart tip. Thanks for the heads up!
