Nono is beautifully grounded in Webern here, with his own sensibility. The conductor conveys real organicism. So few music figures really get to Life thru their work. Nono's complete work should be studied and absorbed. We're lucky to have this video.

Omitting the lengthy spoken parts and going straight to the music is welcome. Those who love this work will be familiar with 'full' versions anyway and this approach does not restrict interest to those who do not speak Italian or German. When played to this phenomenal standard SWR has essentially revived a very beautiful masterpiece which, in many ways, links to compositions which followed -- notably by Henze, Maderna, Birtwistle and others. The "floating canto" device in regular use in music after this work remains a central key stone in so many pieces regardless of their being 12 tone or using other basic pitch and harmonic styles. Its advantage is that is provides delineation of 'layers' which can be used linked to motifs, harmonies and even blocks of orchestral focal points. Later Boulez, Penderecki and some Baltic composers of high technical ability were able to thrive using this approach. I wonder if Nono realized how liberating this work would be when it was let out of the Darmstadt intellectual narrow mindedness which Stockhausen himself never liked, so the association is often unjust to him. This was at a time when young Boulez and others declared all music before Schoenberg obsolete as silly young men who creatively ditched that -- because music is music and "The New Music" (as it was called) would also be temporally dynamic. In addition, there were political elements at a turbulent time which too frequently hampered the evolution of the last quarter of the 20th century which cannot be overlooked. With all of these distractions we are very lucky that Nono took the Canto's precision and beauty even further, calmly in sonic terms if not texts, to 'Prometeo' and some late works composed as his health began failing and he died at 64. Far too little of his music is performed now and those who did not have the privilege of being alive during that 'New Music' phase and into later evolutions really would benefit from the lack being attended to. Why? Because Nono's extension of the Webern aesthetic into new ways of making beautiful sounds which found their way into later works explains so much. The man had music in his entire being and it is not far-fetched to link his work to Gesualdo and earlier as well as music being composed now. Precision and beauty of sound could be a definition of music.

Very convincing performance of great poetic composition by Nono! Congratulations for all musicians: conductor, soloists, choir and orchestra. It is so difficult to perform such music but when you do it in possibly highest level of technique and with deepest commitment you can present it as an really attractive and touching, even if music aesthetics are sometimes harsh and brutal. Fantastic job and pleasure to listen!

Well nobody went out because they heard a masterpiece of the 50's. And it is a masterpiece for so many reasons that I will not explain here. If you are not VERY lazy you can find enough information online so you could TRY to understand what is going on here. Things you write like "banause", "ohrenkrebs" etc just makes it obvious that you are an ignorant and you do not have a clue about 20th century music. So go on and hear some 19th century music and do not leave your sh^%& here man.
