(Picking 28) Master Magnum M175 combination padlock decoded using no tools! (decoded)

How to easily decode a Master Magnum M175 (M175XDLF) combination padlock using no tools (and I also show another decoding method using a soda can). Note that this is the M175 not the plain 175, and this M175 padlock is more secure and cannot be bypassed with the "lever lift" bypass method (because this lock has been redesigned and doesn't have a lever!). Because of this, the knocking (hitting / rapping) method also fails with this lock.
See this lock deconstructed here: • Master Lock Combinatio...
and: • Decoding a Master Magn...
Also see my other videos on a similar lock where 3 different types of bypass methods are used:
• (Picking 24) 4-wheel b...
and:

Very nice review and decoding demonstration - it's a great lock for playing. Weird that the line for the numbers is not at the center. I always wondered why some locks have this 0-stop, now I know - thank you for the info. The last method with the decoding tool is a bit cumbersome - I'd prefer pull-picking whenever possible.
@Swynndla
@Swynndla 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your support and encouragement sir Potti ! :D :D (and your kind words) - Yea I love combination locks and the ability to decode them with no tools, but instead using only the pull-picking (with shackle tension). :D To me, it means the lock is even less secure. Also yes the pull-picking method is quite fast. Gosh, they really did a good redesign from the 175 to the M175 as the lever is so well housed that it's practically impossible to get to it, and even if we could, it doesn't lift! (but the redesign enabled the possibility of the pull-picking method) - thanks once again! :D

@@Swynndla what's a decent lock that puts up a challenge without breaking the bank?
@Swynndla
@Swynndla 4 жыл бұрын
@@nightmicu Good question! There are some good combination locks but they are expensive (like the ABUS 190CS/60). If you want something cheaper, then get a key-lock instead of a combination one ... make sure it's a good brand like Abus, Yale or even Masterlock would be ok - even though if someone knows how to pick key-tumbler locks then they will be able to get into a Masterlock fairly easily, but at least Masterlock's have strong shackles for bolt-cutters etc (and that's how locks are attacked, with bolt-cutters etc) so they'd probably be fine. If you really want a combination lock and don't want to pay that much, get a "MasterLock 175D" (make sure it has the "D") as described in my video 120, or even better get a dial-combination one like an "Abus 78KC/50" (see my video 87) but not a Masterlock one. The general rule of you get what you pay for is certainly true to locks, and it's work spending more to protect your stuff. All the cheap unknown brand locks say "high security" but it's all lies. Trust known brands with good reputations. Well, that's what I think! :D

It should be the same thing but in reverse ... tension the shackle not by pulling, but by trying to close it, and hopefully that will tension the insides to feel when a wheel has more "play". Also the "coke can" method should still work. Is it a Master M175?

Possibly ... the more you pull the shackle, the more it should tighten things up. Try getting more tension by wearing gloves, and/or attaching something to the shackle it isn't already.

As a specialist in lock picking, can you recommend a lock that offers better overall protection and that is difficult for thieves to compromise ?
@Swynndla
@Swynndla 3 жыл бұрын
I'm no specialist, but this is what I know... For padlocks with a key, thieves tend not to pick them with lock picks but will rather try to cut them with a hacksaw or bolt cutters (and they will also try and use a hammer), so any beefy looking lock with a good name like Masterlock, Abus etc will be good. I wouldn't recommend a cheap padlock from a company you've never heard of before, because even though they say hardened steel, those cheap ones don't actually use hardened steel and are easy to cut through (or a couple of hard hits with a hammer will open it too). For Combination padlocks, most of them can be decoded without tools, and some thieves will attempt decode the simple ones. This Master Magnum M175 is a shame because it's got a really strong shackle and is otherwise really secure, but it can be decoded all too easy without tools. You get a little more protection from Abus or Yale combination locks, but they too can be defeated without tools if you know how. If all you want to do is use them to lock up your gym locker then it's fine, but I wouldn't use combination locks to lock up a shed or trailer etc and instead I'd use a padlock with a key ... but if you really want to use a combination padlock to lock up something more than a gym locker then I'd recommend one of these big beefy ones: ABUS 190CS/60 Federal Lock SR60 Super Sesamee K636

@Swynndla
@Swynndla 3 жыл бұрын
Do you have the same model of lock? You could try the first method again, but you need to make sure you are applying tension (as if you're trying to open the lock) when testing for "looseness" (and you can release tension when turning to the next number to test, and then tension again...). With the 2nd method, most of the time when it does open it's because one of the numbers is slightly wrong. You can double check them. You can also put 3250 and turn 5 places for each wheel (so it would be 7805), and then test number around that, or if we suspect only one wheel is wrong, set it to 7805 and then pick on the first wheel and try all the numbers (0805, 1805, 2805 ... testing each one) and then do the same with the 2nd wheel (7005, 7105, 7205...). Hope that helps - good luck, and lemme know how you get on.

@Swynndla 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't reviewed really expensive padlocks yet. I don't know trailers that well, and I don't know what's available where you are, but I can make some suggestions... First of all, do you want a combination padlock or a key padlock? The advantage of a combination padlock is that you don't have to remember a key, but the disadvantage is that people try to pick combination locks because it requires no tools enter the combination. For key locks, crooks will try brute-force with leverage or cutting (instead of picking) and so it's important to get one with a strong shackle. Master locks do make some strong shackles, and so if it's a key-lock then I don't think crooks will carry around picking tools to pick them (even if they are quite easy to pick). You can go for Abus or American locks for better picking security. If you want a combination lock, choose one that's resistant to the pull-picking method like kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXuxpGZuh7mala8 as crooks wont carry specialized tools and wont have the time or patience for the probing method. You get what you pay for, and stay away from cheap no-name brands or cheap ones with an unknown brand that says "Top security padlock" which is just marketing BS. Don't get cheap ones like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rH7cioWobbGdo6s You'll also want one that talks about being suitable for outdoors. If your trailer is going near the sea (like a boat trailer) then you'll want to spend the extra $$ for a marine grade padlock. You probably know most of what I've said, but that's what I can suggest.

It's easy to miss that you are pushing down, not pulling up. I only noticed when I read comments.

This is such a shame because I like this lock with its build and the boron carbide shackle but it is a big design flaw if one could get it open without any tools. I simply can't trust combination locks over keyed locks.

I use the 2nd method and the metal piece all goes in the slot but it's not opening. You know what's wrong?
@Swynndla
@Swynndla 2 жыл бұрын
Did you put the metal piece down the right hand side of the wheels? (and in the middle of the bottom, not to one side?) Once you all found all of them, did you turn each wheel exactly 5 places without knocking any of the other wheels to a different position? The shackle should then pull up.

Very nice job my friend, I think I would rather have a person stand there and decode the lock for awhile rather than stick a tool in and open the lock in 1/2 second.

Thank you Bearsback my friend! :D :D Yea I was wondering about that ... to my mind, having the lock picked (nearly as fast as knowing the combination once you get used to it) is pretty dangerous, especially when no tools are needed - so it opens up possibilities of opportunistic thieves (as not many people carry extremely thin tools around with them). If it takes 30 seconds to get into the lock rather than 1/2 a second, it doesn't really make much difference if your lock is left in a locker for ages (or on a shed or bike or truck, etc). That's my thinking, but you might be right. Thank you once again for watching & for your feedback! :D

We moved to China last year, shortly after returning to New Zealand we couldn't get the backyard door open (My parents are the type to have a different passcode for everything). Lets just say my parents were very concerned...

So even with no pulling on the shackle, the dials wont turn ... in either direction? If that's the case then the lock may be broken.
