I now have a collection of 10+ bikes! Thank you so much! But in all seriousness, I had a bike that I haven't used in years, and there was a bike lock attached, I cracked it in 5-10 minutes. Then my dad randomized it for me again, and cracked it again! Thanks so much for this mostly useless (but fun) skill.

LOL Excellent! Well done on your new skill :D :D well it can be a useful skill if you or someone else forgets their combination code. Also it highlights that combo locks aren't that secure.
@mrmatthewshun Жыл бұрын
Every skill is useless as long as you don't have to use it. Once you are in need, you'll thank your past self for learning something useful. I lost my old lock and had to buy one on my way to uni. Only problem was: I forgot the code. After school (and mild panicking) I picked it in 2 minutes and I was on my merry way. Lockpicking is a skill like hacking. You don't have to use it maliciously for it to be useful.

@@Swynndla I was shocked how easy it was. And this was a Master lock. False sense of security.
@Swynndla2 жыл бұрын
@@sethmeyer4951 Master locks are popular, but yes it's a false sense of security as you say, and it only keeps honest people out! If someone is locking up something valuable and it's left unattended for more than 10 mins then they should ask themselves if it's worth spending more on a decent lock. Good bike shops will be able to advise which ones are secure. That's partly why I do these videos, to show how easy it is for someone to get into them (sometimes people get in so fast it's just as fast as entering the correct code, and they get away with it in a busy location without raising suspicion). Other types of thieves will use some sort of bold-cutter to cut the chain etc. Combination locks attract opportunistic thieves who just come across a combination lock and try it out, and they don' t have to cary any tools to do so.

I ran into a lady today in the bike parking area. Someone had emptied her tire and chained their bike to hers in an effort to steal her bike or something. She was on the phone with the police for a good 10 minutes. After she got off the phone I asked if she was okay and she explained that someone had locked their bike to hers and she couldn't go home. I have memories as child of figuring out this method on my own bike lock so I figured I'd give it a go. Imagine her surprise when I unlocked it in a mere 5 seconds. The lock was set at 127. I have a hard time feeling when a wheel is on the right number, but there is an easy way: when it’s on the right number and you pull hard, the next wheel becomes difficult to turn. Example, if the wheels are ordered as in the video: set the fourth to zero, pull hard, and see how difficult it is to rotate the third one. It’s going to be easy, no matter how hard you pull, unless the fourth one is on the correct number. So try 0, 1, 2, etc. once you find it, move to the next one (try different numbers on the third one and see which one makes the second wheel hard to pull under tension).

I have gone into big stores to open all sorts of locks and ones like this. I shouldn't do that because I know I am on security cameras. My first lock that I opened like the one in this video was when I was 12 years old. While watching TV as a 14 year old I opened a Master padlock with just a wire. It was probably bent so it would act as a tension wrench and a pick. Many years later lock opening has become my hobby.

was not sure, but really works! my lock bound to the right! it was quite expensive, inkluding a real solid chain! it is a bit frightening, how easy this goes!
@Swynndla11 ай бұрын
Excellent - well done for getting it open! Yea part of why I do these videos is to show people that combination locks aren't that secure. Most thieves will physically cut the lock/chain, but there are a small percentage that will attempt to decode it, and some do it opportunistically, where they have no tools on them and they come across it and "just give it a go". For better security, use a lock with a key. More of a hassle to carry around the key, which is why a lot of people opt for a combination lock. It's good you used an expensive lock. Some people put a cheap bike lock on their expensive bike. I generally recommend spending 10% to 15% of the bike's worth on a bike lock.
@bvrulez11 ай бұрын
@@Swynndla thanks for the answer! actually, the SPGOOD lock is just 10 bucks. but i meant it is heavy because of the chain and thus looks more expensive than then one you used. maybe more expensive locks have a better locking system for the numbers.

HELP ME! MY BIKE LOCK GOT STUCK 3/4 IN THE HOLE! I was trying to set the password, but apparently some point along the way my finger brushed against the dial and set it as the wrong one with out me noticing. I was fiddling around with it, but it got stuck three fourths of the way locked. PLEASE HELP!
@Swynndla10 ай бұрын
If it's stuck most of the way in, then the last dial won't be engaging the teeth of the locking mechanism, so that means you have less wheels to decode (ie in a 4-wheel bike lock, you only need to decode the first 3 wheels). Once you decode the final wheels, the lock should open. Then if it doesn't close all the way, just turn the last wheel until it closes. Does this make sense?

I went up to 03649 and I started searching for other ways to open. My fingers hurt rolling the dials. The force needs to be as hard as u can pull, its only then you will notice the difference. And yeah i had skipped the password while trying each number manually.

Well done! Thanks for the tip on pulling hard ... yes I tend to pull quite hard, and I probably didn't explain that well - so thanks for sharing! Yea when you tested manually (every combination) it's easy to go right passed it, either because the tension is exactly straight (so wont open) or because it's easy to lose your place when testing every combination. Well done opening it! Also thanks for the feedback / tips. Yea I find that good-quality locks have lots of false gates. I still think that for bike locks the best method to try first is the "Indirect" method that I describe in my video 144 (it works on most bike locks) and if no joy then use another method eg: feel for clicks and distinguish true from false gates. It's amazing that different types of combination locks take different techniques to open them.

Thank you for the feedback & tips! Yea sometimes locks put false gates on the opposite side, and that knowledge can help with decoding. Dunno why only the first 3 wheels were playing ball, but I guess the remaining wouldn't take long to brute-force. Great job getting it open btw :D :D

I would use the plain Indirect Method in my video kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJ_CgmawjLabebs ... but make sure to wear gloves and you'll have to pull really hard (with constant tension) on old locks. Some people have had success by standing on the cable to get even more tension. You might be able to get someone to help you tension it. Your fingers will suffer. If that fails, then you could try the "Sideways" method in my video 190: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2HboYafidmphKM ... but it only works on some locks." Good luck!

@Swynndla3 жыл бұрын
Yea that's one of the reasons I did these videos, to show people how not-secure they are. Get a key lock, and make sure the thick cable isn't really a thin metal cable with lots of plastic covering it ... those type are so easy to cut.
@ballsdeep69542 жыл бұрын
@@Swynndla aren’t key locks easy to 😢😢
@Swynndla2 жыл бұрын
@@ballsdeep6954 Most key-locks are outside people's skill-set. A thief would have to bring lock picks and be experienced with them (as even though some are easy, a lot of key locks are very difficult to open), so thieves instead bring heavy tools like a bolt cutter or grinder etc, and if they are caught with these items on them when acting suspiciously, they are in deep trouble. With combination locks, it attracts opportunistic thieves, who don't need any tools, and they can do it on the spur of the moment. That's how I see it anyway.

Locks are everywhere! You just need to keep your eyes peeled for them. Hanging around sign post, bike racks, fences in city's or towns. Go to high crime area and check out bike racks for cut locks. Cutting locks is buy far the fastest and easiest way of stealing bikes, especially if the thief is on drugs, or has other serious mental impairment, which most do. I have an enormous collection of locks, never paid a penny for any of them. Just keep it legal, or mostly legal. Citation by cops, which is less than a misdemeanor is my limit for deviousness.

Cool video, I love decoding locks. Do these ones always go left to right or right to left? From my limited experience it seems that it can be sometimes random with other disc locks
@Swynndla4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! :D :D Yep they are a lot of fun. They can bind in either direction, but usually one way or another and not so much completely random (a few locks do though) ... so different from key-tumbler locks! Cheers

This wouldn't be so easy when the lock is in situ around a bike , when the cable is already pulled tight and possibly twisted.
@Swynndla Жыл бұрын
Very true. I've had some people get me to help them get a combo lock off their bike that they'd forgotten the combo (and also a 2nd hand shop), and it's much more difficult "in the field" ... the angles and bending over and reaching out in front of me makes it more difficult.

So... When the pin is just partially in and we're not certain that the code has been or not been accidentally altered... Can this method be used ?
@Swynndla2 жыл бұрын
Yes this method should still work, but only some of the wheels (closest to the opening) will have any affect (that other wheels wont have the teeth on the pin to engage with), so you only need to use the wheels closest to the opening. If you can't get it open then use the Indirect method described in my video Picking 144. Once you're got it only then you'll only know some of the combination, but with bike locks it's easy to get the rest of the combination by follow the method in my video Picking 30. Let me know how you get on. Good luck!

@@Swynndla Thanks for the answer :) I tried, but I cannot get the end as far as you could in the video, so the pin doesn't click through when I turn the first wheel. The lock looks like this at the end - imgur.com/a/NeazPTT. It seems that there is something in there that is not aligned?

Just gave the homeless community a huge upgrade.😂 We gonna have the bicycle chop shop open in no time.😂😂😂 In all honesty, though police just shut one down next to my house. They were stealing bikes like ebikes and stuff and taking them apart and building new bikes to sell them. Literally a bicycle chop shop.😂
@Swynndla9 ай бұрын
WOW interesting! I will say that the majority of bike thieves will not spend the time it takes to decode combination bike locks, but will instead physically attack them with bolt cutters / grinders and the like. They want to spend as little time as possible and leave the scene. However there are a few opportunistic thieves who will see a bike locked up with a combination lock and the just "give it a go" - they have no tools (as they weren't planning it). Part of why I do these videos is to show that combination locks aren't as secure as people think!

Remember to tension the lock by pulling as if you're trying to separate both ends, as if you're trying to open it when the correct combination has been entered, and remember to pull straight, not at an angle. You have to get the first wheel correct before the next wheel will show signs it's on the correct number ("lurching", or more easily turning into the number all of a sudden when turning under tension, and not easily turning out of that number when under tension). If the previous wheel isn't on the correct number then you wont get that lurching into the correct number (or sometimes you will but it wont be as obvious).
