I just love Lord Grantham and Tom's relation after Sybil's death. He grew so fond of him and treated him like a son

Love granny. She knows Sybil is a rational sensible girl and wouldn’t just be frivolous and thoughtless. She tries to convince her out if it but never disparages her except that maybe she romanticised whirlwind romances. Her philosophy that when bad things happen there no point in hindsight only mitigation. She sends them money to visit because they might as well welcome him to the family rather than keep them away

He's political and a writer, well I could make something out of that and there's a family called Branson with a place not far from Cork I believe they have a connection with the Howards. Well, surely we can hitch him onto them! - Lady Violet is the best!

Violet might seem really old-fashioned but she's almost always quite adaptive and flexible. Here you can see that her reaction to Sybil marrying Tom is to figure out a way to make Tom sound more upper class than he is than to object it like Robert does. When Tom said he wants the child baptised as Catholic her reaction is not to fight it, but to cite some other random aristocrat's catholicism as a way out. Is it shallow? Yes, very. But it makes everyone happy.

Lord Grantham is a foolish man. He could not have hoped for a better man for any of his daughters than Branson. He was very lucky that Mathew turned out to be a good chap. He would have let Mary get into a loveless marriage with Patrick had he not died. I understand that he tried to hold on to social standards and traditions. But in the end he always did what the ladies wanted anyways.

@@joanbernsten3960 you took the words right out of my fingers. The character of Lord Grantham was limited by the time he lived in, he showed himself to be not just kind hearted, but flexible enough to accept a radical shift. A dynamic we could do with now in abundance to help welcome and manage the present difficulties!
@joanbernsten39604 жыл бұрын
Exactly, imagine how hard it must have been for him to accept that Sybil married Tom. A noble lady marrying a socialist (in the eyes of any nobleman, extremist) chauffeur, wasn't a thing allowed to happen, Robert probably lost a lot of trust and liability in his circles. It was not easy for anyone in the family and hardest for Robert, he had to deal with the consequences. Him then taking Tom in, after being wanted in Ireland is so much more that anyone would have done in his position. He did a amazingly brave and kind thing, this could have ruined him, this whole business could have destroyed his and his familys' whole life. He was not foolish in any way with Tom. And of course he wanted Mary to marry Patrick, Patrick was going to inherit all Robert had. He was basicly going to inherit Roberts' whole life. Even though Patrick was a relative, he was no close, close relative. You wouldn't give your entire fortune, a fortune that has been in your family for centuries to your cousin once removed if you had three daughters. So, yea, of course he wanted Mary to marry Patrick, it was rational and logical. It was what was needed to keep his life's work in family.
@KoiYakultGreenTea3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t judge him too harshly. He is bound by the times he lives in and the values he was raised on. But also must remember that he doesn’t know Tom. He was the chauffeur the whole time. And it looked to him that Sybil had been seduced or swept up by his employee which to any man is very suspicious and underhanded to want to run off with their youngest daughter. Besides that, Tom is also a revolutionary. His principles are directly contradicting roberts. So even if he were a good man, by that alone Robert would never allow it. And also that the deal with Patrick was ages ago way before the events of the show. And everything from the first episode is what we’re concerned with. Cos the titanic sinking, WWI and the Spanish flu, they all influenced the family. They changed with the times drastically. That’s why thre shows events are important. Mary was a snobbish woman who hated the middle classes like her father. She would’ve made it work with Patrick if he hadn’t died the way violet did with her husband and coras with hers. That’s their way. Until the titanic and everything after that. After that. Things changed. And to start with Sybil was the game changer. She was the one who shook the house; with her career choices and her choice of husband. It’s because of her that Robert allowed Edith and Mary to marry who they wanted even if he disapproved. Because Sybil rebelled against the system he began to change too. Even Lavinia’s death changed him. It made him see that life is precious and what matters is happiness

Tom Branson is not a middle class person rather he belonged to servant class in this series. If you remember correctly Mary and everyone in the family at the beginning looked down upon Mathew and Isabel because of their middle class upbringing. Imagine if a lawyer son in law wasn't good enough for Robert then how the hell he could ever approve a chauffeur who used to work for him to be his darling daughter husband. Forget 1920's even in this era do you think any middle family would ever truly accept a chauffeur as their son in law.
