I liked Tom and Sybill, but honestly I didn't start loving Tom untill after Sybill. His friendship with Mary is one of my favorite relationships in the whole series and the way everyone in the family starts drawing to him as the voice of reason and support is amazing. Tom should have been given more screentime and more interactions with either crawly sister and the rest of the family in the later seasons. Would have been great to see him interact with the staff more as well. His actor and Thomas Barrows actor seem really good friends in real life at least on set. So it would have been great to have those 2 characters interact more. But I suppose the writer of the series didn't love Tom and his potential as much as I did. A pity, because he really became a great character down the line. Less hot headed, but still a man of principles. Just more reasonable and more aproachable in those principles. And again, his friendship/brother sister like relationsip with Mary is one of my favorites. He was one of the few characters that seemed to both know the real Mary and love her, withoud putting up with her bullshit nor glorifying the earth she walked on. He was her equal mentally. Somebody that could speak up, yet also support when needed. Scold, and forgive. Tom loved Mary, flaws and all. Characters in downton, as well as many fans of the show, either seem to hate Mary, or worship her. Tom is one of those few who just treats her like a human being.

I loved Mary and Matthew as a couple, but in a way I thought Mary's and Tom's personalities matched better. If Tom was of higher social standing and came from an aristocratic Irish family I could see Mary going for an Irish rebel in her twenties.to rebel when she initially was so against the idea of marrying Matthew as she as a woman couldn't inherit her father's estate properly despite being the eldest. I loved Mary and Tom's relationship after Sybil passed in the series, but I would've thought romantically Tom's stubbornness matched Mary's better than Sybils.

I'll give credit to Mary and Edith. They didn't march in and tell Sybil not to marry the love of her life. They were actually quite accepting given the circumstances, and encouraged her to stick by her principles and follow her heart. Sybil really brought out the best in those girls. 💔

It was more bad timing. They didn’t outright try to convince her of it because they knew she’d only get defensive and retreat. They wanted to gently convince her of it but see if she was serious about him. But yes they were remarkably gentle with her. Mary’s concern was that Sybil would run away. She wanted Sybil to be accepted by her father. Not to elope marry above board and at peace in the family. @@MsJubjubbird no I doubt it. Because Sybil was prepared to elope with no money and no possessions and no connection with the family. Plus he’s a socialist so he’s less likely to accept any money since he hates the aristocracy for his own pride. That’s why nobody ever really had any concern that Branson wanted money. Brenson had if not the best, one of, character development in the whole of the series. At first, he was quite narcissistic, very sure of himself, and as badly as I want to forget that, he thought that Sybill had to choose between him and her family. As if they were his complete enemies. Then, after Sybill died, he really understood the meaning of family, and how much he was wrong to think of them as lowly as he did. When both of those ladies thought that “If Tom could, I can as well.” and tried to turn him against his own family out of greediness and jealousy, he made the right choices to get them out of his and the family’s life. He loves all of them, and wants everyone to live peacefully. Remember when Mary told Edith’s fiancé about Mary-gold, he was fuming! Never have seen him so angry! He really became one of the best characters in the series.

The attraction between Tom & Sybil is obvious. Their love for each other is true. But the reality is that Sybil was the one risking & sacrificing for their relationship not Tom. Sybil was sacrificing her status & risked tarnishing her reputation. As a women of the 19th & early 20th century, reputation was everything because it literally followed you to your grave. No matter the class, if a women of that era were perceived to have an indecent reputation she was blacklisted everywhere she went. Remember the maid Ethel from season three & the efforts Edith made to hide Marigold. Where as with men all they got was a frown & a head shake. Tom could play reckless because he had no status to loose & simply put he was a man. Sure people would gossip about him but he wouldn't be blacklisted & shamed like a woman would be.

People really didn't understand what Tom really meant about Sybil's work. He's not completely wrong at this point in the story because at the time she returned to Downton and her job as a nurse was limited to giving blankets and drinks to soldiers. She was more important at the hospital than at Downton. I think that's what Tom was talking about. And above all, he says that all this is just a detail, because abandoning her job as a nurse at Downton was not the end, she could have found this kind of work elsewhere. That's why he talks about details, because for him, at this precise moment he is not sure that she is in love with him. There's nothing selfish, he didn't despise her. He waits for an answer even though he opened his heart to her months ago. And that she continues to come see him, spend time with him. Tom admired Sybil, loved her unreservedly, and waited for her. And he had a form of frustration because, between the war for Ireland and his love for Sybil, he still remained lost in doing things right, for his convictions and her. While knowing that in the scripts, Tom apologizes for these clumsy words. He didn't want to judge her work. He is a good man, a wonderful man, and we speak of troubled times and war, including in his own country where he hoped for freedom. Stop seeing evil everywhere. When she started talking about how difficult she'd find it to leave her family behind I was honestly raising my eyebrows a little. Like... is that what she actually thinks or is that her trying to talk herself out of something she really does want to have? And if it's the latter, does Tom know her well enough to know that? Which I realise now that I'm typing this, is yet another variant of the Macbeth/Baby it's cold outside discourse. And yeah, I'm basically in the pro-agency camp in all 3 scenarios. Macbeth wanted to kill, Baby wanted to stay, and Sybil wanted to run away with Tom. That's how I interpret all 3 examples LOL

We're being blinded by the love of these two when in fact Tom gaslighted Sybil in running away with him. If you love someone, you would understand and accept everything about her, even how nasty her family can be to you, and you wouldn't take her away from her family who she loves dearly.
@JMac73953 жыл бұрын
Agreed. You can't tell someone that they're in love. Only that person knows for sure. Yes Sybil found Tom attractive but she was not in love with him. Sybil is a genuinely caring & kind person who puts the needs of others before her own. This was displayed when she helped Gwen. So her worrying about Tom's job is not out of character. But Tom kept conflating certain actions with "being in love". Tom pretty much pushed Sybil into falling in love with him instead of allowing it to happen naturally.

She was giving these men care and much needed love after all their experiences. And he had the nerve to simplify it like it was a waste. I do believed he loved, more than she loved him even. But he was pretty hotheaded young man during this time and I think that’s why people have mixed feelings about their relationship.

Anne Of Green Gables he might’ve been feeling a bit inadequate in the face of her. True though that nurses at that time were nothing more than glorified maids with a side of bandaging and administering injections. But it really isn’t fair for him to minimise her career choices so glibly. But I suppose he wanted to simplify the situation that what she’s doing at Downton is pretty much that and he wanted her to make a choice because for him it’s all or nothing. Because for her she has choices. For him he doesn’t and he wanted to be sure. Still I wish he had been more sensitive. Probably back then men don’t know how to take to women

I absolutely hate how he belittles Sybil's nursing work. She was not just "bringing drinks to Randy officers", war nurses were crucial to the war effort, they saved lives and reduced suffering.

People often say things in the heat of an argument that they don't really mean. Tom was frustrated, angry, and hurt, emotions that had gotten the best of him in that moment. We've all been there. The thing you have to remember though, is that having a reasonable explanation doesn't necessarily guarantee forgiveness.

The show started with everyone on a 3-season contract. When it came time for the actors to re-up the contract for another 3 seasons the actors for Matthew, Sybil, and O’Brien decided to not renew, everyone else did. They had to write them out over the course of season 3, though O’Brien they waited for her character to leave the show in the opening of the first episode of season 4.

I don’t get why they snuck off like that, Sybil could have made up a story about a weekend getaway so she could have left in broad daylight and get to Scotland on the train meanwhile Tom went to Gretna. Sybil could have met him there then they could have married. Then she could have sent the letter from Gretna.

Tom is the most unrealistic of the characters and plot line. Anyone who has read about the time...he would have been fired the first sign of personal interaction with Sybil, and if she ran away with him, shed have been banished. In general he is very rude to his employers. How he rises up in the family is a 21st century fantasy

I don't think that they loved each other in the beginning. Tom was a bit selfish and attracted to her - her free spirit. Sybil said it when she accepted his proposal - he was her ticket out of a suffocating world. But i think they grew to love each other at they matured....

The relationship dynamic portrayed in this video makes no sense. Sybil has shown no interest yet Tom insists that she loves him. It comes across as him bullying her into it but we are supposed to believe they are in love. It was the only cringiness I felt watching the series.
@dorarebelo6734 жыл бұрын
The royals put me on the spot for a reason. The reason I suspect is desperation and disbelief in the role that you have been playing. Everybody is on the same boat - including yourselves. You have to want to cooperate with the rest of the world in order to make things better 'for yourselves' as well - not just focus on control. This collective psychosis breaks everyone, no exceptions. Nobody is so special to a point that he or she is not broken into pieces. It is what it is; there is no betrayal. You don't have to 'burn our soul' the way you have been doing. There is only one reasonable explanation for this and that is, you have wanted to do it.

I never liked Tom & Sybil. I never found their relationship to be believable. An aristocrat marrying one of her family's employees simply wound never have happened back then. It wouldn't have been allowed. I also wonder if Sybil really did ever love him? Does she ever, at any point, tell him she does (I don't remember)? I've always thought that she simply saw him as her ONLY way out of Downton and that whole lifestyle. I also find it hard to believe that she'd be happy and content, after they were married, living with no money. For all her talk about not caring about money, when she said that, she'd NEVER been without money. She had no clue what life was like without money. I find it hard to believe that a woman who had always had everything, from the day she was born, would be content living without it.
@MsJubjubbird6 ай бұрын
It did happen sometimes. Bit often the woman would have lost her fortune and been kicked out of the family. I think a lot of people that age would like to say they are with the poor, but couldn't handle being poor.
