Double contact wires are needed due to the current draw of the trains. In the old days a single was sufficient except on some freight lines with high grades. But with aircon etc being standard these days all lines need double contact wires to provide the current. The alternative is thicker contact wires.

Yes. 1500 volts is farly low by modern standards. Even high speed 3000 volt lines in Italy have 2 contact wires for this reason. The Western Sydney Airport Metro shouldn't need 2 contact wires because it will be 25000 volts.

Yes it is Peter! I really notice the difference in acceleration when I'm on Brisbane's suburban trains which use 25K AC, although single deck and thinner narrow gauge trains probably helps too.

@@TransportVlog Haha! Not entirely sure that narrower trains make a significant difference. The other advantage of 25kV AC is that you don't need as many substations because the voltage drop over distance is a smaller percentage of the nominal rating.

Very nice ! Thank you, I now understand much better how the next line will be laid out. I was just binge watching Mega Metro Sydney documentary series yesterday and this morning, here on KZbin. I've taken quite an interest in Sydney's new metro network. Perfect timing! Had a bit of a hard time recognizing the map at 2:35 as I was looking at sat views from GMaps that are a tad dated. I'm just a bit surprised by the number of trains announced : 23 for this line, 22 for the first Northwest line between Tallawong and Chatswood. It seems not enough as usually these automated lines (or manned) require 1 train per kilometer per side to operate at reasonably high frequency. In the 4th and last episode of the Mega Metro Sydney series they said the first line in service had 90K daily riders and 20 millions yearly. It seems a bit low, isn't it? For comparison, line M1, the current busiest in Paris (where I live) has about 750K daily and 200 to 210 millions yearly for a length of 16 kilometers. M1 was the first line inaugurated in 1900 and was converted to full driverless automation (with platform screen doors and the works, GoA4) circa 2010. The line has 53 driverless trains, of which at least 45 are running simultaneously during peak. Or M14, another fully automated driverless line (GoA4, this one from conception, inaugurated in 1998) that is expected to pass the million daily riders next year with its South extension. The least used "main" metro line in Paris is the good old M10, with a little under 50 millions yearly. And for the number of trains : I live a stone's throw away from M11, a semi-automated line with drivers (GoA2) and no platform screen doors yet, that is being extended. It has 39 trains for 12 kilometers (extension included). Or M4, another century old historical line recently converted to full driverless GoA4 automation, about 55 trains for 14 kilometers. Or the future M15, a gigantic, fully underground, 75 kilometer long loop line that is part of the huge Grand Paris Express project and which first phase, M15 South, is set to open in 2025. This express line with longer spacing between stations and higher speeds will have 133 trains (of the same product line as Sydney Metro : Alstom Metropolis), presumably called MR6V, and possibly more as there are talks about a supplemental order for 22 or 25 additional trains. The daily ridership forecast for the GPE has recently been revised from 2 to 3 millions. That's why I'm surprised by the relatively small number of trains announced for the Sydney metro lines. So my questions are : Do they plan on acquiring more trains for these lines or will they operate with so few? What's the total number of trains ordered? Is the seemingly modest ridership on the first Northwest line only temporary while they extend the line? What are the ridership forecast for the completed line or lines? I'm guessing the harbor tunnel will certainly boost ridership massively. Ah, and I almost forgot : what are the bypass tracks for? Do metro trains run on these? Why for? Thanks! It looks like a very nice and efficient new metro system, one more reason to come visit Sydney. Greetings from Paris!

Glad you enjoyed this video, and that it helped you in understanding Sydney Metro better, along with the Mega Metro documentary series. To answer your questions, 45 trains in total is enough to run a 4 minute service on the whole line. As demand grows, frequencies can be increased to a train every 2 minutes and more trains can be purchased at that time. Trains can also be lengthened to 8 cars. Yes the patronage on the NW part is still quite low, especially during the off-peak, but I'm sure it will increase once the city & southwest section opens. I don't have access to any ridership forecast figures. The bypass tracks are for metro trains to access Trains Facility South, so will not be used in passenger service. @@TransportVlog Thanks for the reply! The 45 trains you're mentioning, are they for the metro network? Or just one line? I haven't totally grasped the lines' subdivision yet. In the Mega Metro documentary it looked like there would be 3+1 lines : one Northwest, one West and one Southwest, all connected. Plus a kind of orbital North-South line farther West to serve the new Western Sydney airport. Are the 45 trains for all these lines? Or only for one of them, and in that case which one? So I'm guessing the rail yard shown in the video next to the tunnel entry is not "Trains Facility South" as I initially thought. As for the ridership, seeing how good the system looks and how nice the stations and trains are, I bet this will be a massive success and help the locals leave their cars home and why not, ditch them entirely. Sorry for the silly questions, I've only recently started looking into Sydney Metro so I'm not yet up to speed. 🤣 It's super interesting and exciting anyway. It really is a new era for transit, between Sydney, Montreal, Paris, etc. There's new transit stuff popping up everywhere.

Every time I use the new entry to Platform 6, the gates always close too quickly, and a couple times "attempted m*rder!" 😂I've seen the Alstom Metropolis' testing at Sydenham quite a lot now, only the other day, I was standing on top of the Marrickville Metro (no, shopping centre!) 😂 and saw a metro train coming right toward me when it then all of a sudden began going in the Northbound tunnel toward Waterloo! I'd probably been to Sydenham 5 or 6 times in the last 6 week, and didn't see a train on test last week! It would have been cool to film a Metro Train going into the tunnel! I'll need the big zoom lens to film that from the shopping centre! Yes the testing will be very interesting, especially when they emulate the peak service!

Yes, I believe the new phones can do 3X optical zoom. However, smartphones will often allow further zooming, but that's digital zoom, and comes at the expense of resolution, so I try to avoid using that.

When you observe an additional “contact wire”, are you really meaning an additional catenary support wire. ? The contact wire is usually solid copper about 10mm in diameter with two grooves along either side enabling it to be grasped by a clamp leaving the bottom of the wire free for the pantograph to slide along without obstruction. The additional catenary, just above the contact wire, can be a conventional multi stranded cable and supported with clamps right around the wire. It was first introduced o n the Blue Mountains to supply sufficient current for the freight trains.

Hi Ralph, from what I could see, there were 2 contact wires and 2 catenary wires. I'l take a closer look when I'm next back to Sydenham, but from the footage, that's what it looked like to me. I could see why they did that on the Blue Mountains line for freight trains!

Yes, I haven't done for a while, but I did notice that the lifts at Wiley Park were in use when I visited last week, and I think the Punchbowl lifts will come into service too. The eastern and western bypass tracks basically provide an alternative way into Trains Facility South from the NE side. It will be interesting to see how much it is used, but I guess its good practice to have two ways into TFS in case there is a problem with the main approach tracks. Yes, all trains in passenger services will go underground.

Those boxes between the tracks, I'd say they are just lids for underground wiring caverns. Like how when you see a access panel in the ground for telephone wiring, except because of the complexity of the balise (beacon) system there is a lot of them all. Also of note, they are always quite close to the balises. I suspect the offset might be so that there is a bit more distance between the pit and the balise, perhaps to deliberately allow slack in the cabling or to allow work in the pit to not disturb the balise? I have no idea there

Yes that would make sense. The yellow tops are protective covers for the balise, so I guess it makes sense to use the same covers for wiring other things too.

Hi Christian, thanks for your feedback. So the original trains are sets 1 to 22. The first two numbers on each car are the set number. The new fleet are sets 23 to 45. If you look really closely, you might spot one of the car numbers, and they all start with 28. Hope that makes sense!

Nobody knows at the moment. The Metro to Parramatta/Westmead and the Bankstown Line section of the City and Southwest Metro are under review. I suppose it is possible that decisions have already been made at the highest level though. So we will have to wait and see.

I did hear that they may change/add stations on the line to Westmead. Camellia for a light rail interchange might work.

Judging by the cable trays, that "mystery structure" looks like it feeds networking/signalling in to the tunnels. Could also have uninterruptible power supplies and the like, it did seem to have a lot of ventilation capability at the top

Sydney Metro Trains will serve the existing Sydney Trains Marrickville Station. Marrickville Metro shopping centre is just a viewing point for Trains Facility South, and will not be served by the metro. I guess having metro in the shopping centre name is a little confusing!

At 7:40 one of the overhead gantries had fallen over last between footage takes, hence why such a steep drop in height of the overhead. Spotted it from a T4 train that week but didn’t get a chance to get footage before they took down the fallen over gantry.

Thank you for all the great videos! Do you think converting the Bankstown line to metro is worth the price and the inconvenience caused by temporary suspension of services? I think it's worth it but the cost is quite high and having to take train replacement bus for months sounds really terrible. Also, would you say it's reasonable to extemd Paramatta lightrail to Epping or Macquarie, through tunnel or building it on street?

When you consider the wider benefits, it is worth the pain! And the wider benefits including freeing up capacity on the City Circle to increase frequencies on the T2 and T8, and I think its this that convinced Chris Minn to continue with converting the T3 to Metro. Extending Parramatta Light Rail to Epping or Macquarie is tricky without using tunnels, and that's expensive, and that's probably the sticking point!

@@TransportVlog I used to live in Beverly Hills and I have to wait 15m for trains to central if I missed one, and trains going other direction could skip my station and go straight to Reversby, forcing me to wait for next service. What's more frustrating is the frequent shutdown in the weekends and bus replacement train is slow and uncomfortable. Having more services there is great, although I wish there's also less shutdown or delay. For the Parramatta to Epping/Macquarie, it's unfortunate that there's a gap there. I watched @BuildingBeautifully and he suggested to build a new lightrail line from Paramatta to Macquarie Uni in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rH3NdHiIaMqoi5Y , however it seems that given the current budget it will not happen soon. But perhaps it makes sense to build a branch from Dundas Link to Eastwood, they are close enough to fill the gap without too much money, and since there's only two stations from Dundas Link to Carlingford it probably won't be that much of a problem to have a branch there.

Hi Paul, interesting seeing the new Sydenham station entrance. I passed Sydnenham station many times when living in Marrickville years ago, but I very rarely exited the station there. Incidentally, would you know which building is now sitting next to the freight tracks at Marrickville station? It used to be the Marrickville RSL when I was there, but there appears to be a different building there now. Also, what line was the diesel heritage train using? Incidentally, are they still going ahead with converting the Bankstown lines to Metro operation or has this since been indefinitely delayed? Hi Rob, no I don't, but I'll take a look next time I'm in Marrickville. That was on the up Illawarra Line (the one the T4's normally use). Yes they are. Conversion will start in late 2024 (after the Chatswood to Sydenham part opens) and require the closure of this line for 12 months! That's going to be fun to film. Will probably do it on my bicycle!

@@TransportVlog I am so glad that we no longer live in Marrickville. I remember when there was an eleven day train strike years ago, which caused utter chaos in our area. Twelve months without trains is completely beyond my imagination. Those poor people trying to get to work. We had the Box Hill to Camberwell trains not running from February to June this year, due to heavy line maintenance and construction of Union Station. The people used buses, but they also had the light rail, which helped a bit. Marrickville and other areas on that line may only have buses, with the exception of Dulwich Hill, which had light rail as well.

they couldn't extend the metro to the airport. the Bankstown line is over 100 years old and the Airport is Newer which opened in 2000. It will be fun and easier to go from the Northwest to the Airport Via Chatswood and the City.

Bankstown metro conversion has now been confirmed. Sydney Metro West is still under review, but is highly unlikely to be cancelled, but it may get delayed by a couple of years.

I think most of the new TS sets are identical, the only difference is TS22 which has track recording equipment installed

The reason why there are 2 contact wires is incase one wire fails the other wire can still be used and also voltage requirements for different trains

Yes, I'm sure that's got something to do with it! Makes sense to have a backup if one wire fails.

Incorrect . Twin contact allows for better pantograph performance. The dual catenary allows for higher current capacity for every train all being air con and more electronics on board. If one “fails” it’s lights out so to speak. The contact and catenary are in tension so any break would highly likely cause a circuit fault, trains will stop and I will be out fixing it.

All that graffiti, is disgusting, and generally untidy, this may be why I never use these trains, I do like the set up of the platform and surroundings, very well thought out, but as I said pity they didn't spend a few dollars on the upkeep of the surrounding area, cleaning up and removal of the paint and grime on the brick walls.

Yes it is a shame about the graffiti, and it can be like fighting a losing battle sometimes. I find it quite easy to ignore now. I think Sydney Trains focus on removing it from trains as quickly as possible, and then try and remove it from the rail corridor when they can.
