As a dirt bike rider as well i can say the dangle has saved me on the street from a number of low sides. If you saw that motogp break down of Marquez’s incredible ow side recovery. He used perfect timing of pushing up off the ground with his knee and his elbow and gave it gas at the perfect time and allows recovery of a potential low side crash. Also living in a huge farm area with lots of tractors 🚜 going from the orchards right on to the main roads makes some places a nightmare to ride and sometimes don’t find out till to late. This is also the reason the flat track riders who basically are riding the line between drifting and low siding use this and once the doctor starting racing this style he started using it in motoGP. If you don’t use it on the street maybe you should it could save you from a low side one time and you will do nothing but say holy shit and laugh it off. I did and had to make a phone call after i was so hyped up from saving it haha! It’s funny all these guys makes videos on what the doctor thinks yet no one has asked it himself everyone wants to be the smart scientist that knows the reason and funny thing is everyone probably trying so hard they are probably way over shooting the reason lmao

@walteralter90614 жыл бұрын
To amplify a bit, there are two pivot axes at play during heavy braking when the rear wheel is unweighted - the front axle and the steering head. Braking tends to make the bike chassis and rider pivot and lift up over the front wheel, all that mass wanting to move over the front end into a "stoppie". That is controlled by not braking hard enough to make the bike goes ass over teacup. The second pivot point is subject to the same forces - the bike wants to rotate around the front forks to either side and could easily do this with the rear wheel off the ground. This is kept in check by the rider's sense of balance and feeling in his butt if the rear is coming around. Keeping the rear in line is helped by dangling the leg which acts as a movable counter weight to check any tendency for the rear end to swing laterally. Think of a tightrope walker with a balance bar. The bar is a kind of shock absorber whose inertia compensates for foot wobble and gives stability. Same deal for the motortbike - the leg is weighted inertia that can be moved outwards or inwards opposite to the bike's tendency to rotate laterally. The desire is to keep the bike perfectly orthogonal (perpendicular) to the stopping force. Any longish stationary object balanced on one end is orthogonal to the downward force of gravity. Same deal only substitute the force (deceleration) of braking. Slow speed stunt riders use this lateral pivot often for a showy stop, swinging the rear of the bike around so it stops facing in another direction.

It has taken me up until now to discover why riders used their legs. I like many thought correctly, was to do with imparting more drag/wind resistance but not all the other factors mentioned here. Good insight and well explained , good video. I dont know how these riders feel, but at the time i was a very fit 40's something and bought a Ducati Monster 1100 Evo, was a bucket list bike for me but the constant front loading on the arms not even during braking made it unbearable. I sold it with less than 600KMS on the clock, I should have test ridden the Diavel instead but anyway that's life.

It’s also used like on a dirt bike for a low side. If you can time it just right the mix of kicking off the ground and using the throttle allow you recover from a potential low side and it gives you the confidence of braking later and leaning more. Marquez talks about working on using the kick off and pushing off the pavement with his elbow with the timing on the throttle. They have the video where he does actually low side and recovers using the push off of his knee and elbow. The doctor started using this technique, which they have used in flat track for years since they have no rear brakes and just drift the corners, after he started exploring all the different riding styles and techniques from other motorcycle sports. If you watch the flat track racing which they do a lot of it seems at his compound that’s basically the position they are in the whole time with the leg dangle to help counter the bike washing out Into a low side. Dirt bike riders do that a lot as well which is why you see the people that know what they are doing come in drifting the turns and laying the bike down and the only thing that saves them is the quick timing of using the dangled leg and giving it gas to recover from the low side. I’ve had this save me a couple times on the street coming into a turn of your already use to doing the dangle when you start to wash out on gravel or something getting that foot down is like second nature. I had pull over and make a phone call after it saved me on a back road the last time
