Following the episode "HOW TO RIDE LIKE PRO", many of you asked me what is Short Shifting? And how can it make me faster on track?
In this episode, I explain this riding technique with onboard videos. I give you tricks learn over the years and I even do a bit of name dropping 🤣

Yes, you right. I met Sylvain last year Sep in Donnington Park on a track day. He’s such a nice person, very down to earth. Not like some of those snob, overgrown ego riders you met sometimes. Really helpful with his advices too. I went from novice group to intermediate in no time. And when he was riding with the fast group, he made all them lads looking slow. SG50 is a beats on his bike. Respect to him ✊

Man these vids are just pure gold I had no idea there was so many places where short shifting would come in handy. I always thought it was to stop you hitting the rpm limiter during mid corner. Top information thanks

Hi Sylvain, your videos are just insane. It is such a rarity for a rider of such caliber to share tips and tricks - big thank you. Here is a suggestion for a future video. How to "tell" that you have grip, close to limit when you are leaned and how to explore it safely - even on a tricky road with less/not much feel from the tires. What to look for and how to manage. How do you find the limit of a tire - safely.. A lot of people say trust the tires, "go for it", "lean the bike" but "trust" wont get me out of trouble or the gravel... Thank you!

Hello, Sylvian! Thank you for the very informative videos and also for 'pulling' the curtain to the ways pro riders like you ride. I find the videos very helpful and interesting. I would like to make a suggestion regarding the future videos, where you need to explain the technical details (for example what gear you are on, what revs, where do you shift). Doing video overlays with technical data (gear position, revs, track GPS location, speed, lap time) is really easy currently, with freeware off the internet, and it will really help us better visualize your explanations. Dear Sylvain What a delight and huge thanks for sharing. Nice to watch. Lovely examples to observe. But... The HOW, rather than examples. I’m sure everyone highly appreciates you as a rider. What a marvel to see such talent. I can see you’ve put a huge amount of time and effort into this video alone. The recording, editing, script, observing the riding footage. Takes ages. Heading out on the teaching front, thought I’d pass on some feedback. To be fair the first 3/4 starts out as examples rather than how or why. The latter quarter of the video is great. The first example on start finish is not explained. The answer just sounds like: you’re less likely to make mistakes. There’s no obvious reason you can’t hook up 1st, as long as you don’t fluff the gear change like the first clip; by taking 2nd you’re less likely to do that. Not the best example unless it can be articulated in the video - can you explain? Next one, Red Gate into holly and crainers, 6:44 “because it’s just faster”. No. But why? Crainers is horrible and about settling the bike? Those who dont know it won’t realise how downhill it is, the flip flop of direction and camber. The Dr knows his stuff and I’m sure you’ve figured it. The next example is much better. Driving out the corner to prevent high side, to stabilise the bike, you’ll hit the limiter in 2nd whilst still cornering if you don’t short shift. Yes. Great explanation. More like this!!! Whilst folk may not want deep technical jargon, would it help to mention the types of bike and situation it applies. Bigger bikes; rain etc? Fair to say these bikes are savage and will buck under hard acceleration, the rear can spin up - all good reasons to ride in a manner to tame it. Less relevant on a 125. But even this video teaches you that choosing when to change gear is key - even increments of 500rpm make a difference - so even on a 125 down crainers you may wish to short shift a few rpm just to allow flip flop with total commitment depending how you’re geared. The third example was great. A riders feel and experience. Rather than getting bogged down in the technical of suspension, frame & weight distribution, yaw etc. Keep going! 👍🙂

Excellent explanation.....the time I really noticed short shifting was as a spectator at Silverstone moto gp coming out of Luffield tight hairpin onto the old start and finish straight, all the riders kept such a tight line with no dramas......thanks.👏👏

Awesome. Learnt so much. I never understood why it’s so beneficial. Example Phillip island turn 10- 11. Always watched everyone short shift there. But on my bike felt too sluggish. But now I can see it was more stable less peaky. Thanks.

I was always so greedy to short shift and then I watched a video of a guy who is 5 seconds faster than me in CIrcuit of the Americas on the same bike and he was short shifting at least twice on that track. What a gem of a video. Thank you for the insights and the analysis about how you gained more time. The part about tyre wear seemed to resonate a lot - highlights the mistake I've been doing all along - spinning up the rear in 2nd on fast exit corners whereas I should be employing this technique.

I remember watching live the sbk at Misano back in the nineties (still counterclockwise) when some bikes still had carburetors and the first quickshifters made them bang on most gearshifts: curva del carro in first, full throttle, BANG! BANG!, into what today is corner 13, full third, BANG! BANG! and into 12 towards the curvone

Excellent advice. Last time at Donington, I stopped trying to do Melbourne and Goddards in first and just stuck to second. It's probably the 'wrong' gear on a CBR600rr. I also carried fourth gear into McLeans. Knocked me down from 2:00 to 1:55, which for me is a major achievement! The 'right' gear is the one that makes you faster.

Depends on your gearing. But I bet you found the bike more settled and more stable with the higher gears 👍🏻

very good stuff.....i short shift on the street quite a bit, learned it from MX....my bike actually makes alot of torque and doesnt rev incredibly high......the bike is more settled, chassis works better and you end up carrying more speed thru a sweeping corner.....the bike also shifts alot smoother (at least mine does)......its a great technique

The trick to steer better into corners is using your front brake (15 - 20%) all the way to the apex. Braking makes gives front wheel more load and thus more grip. It also makes your bike shorter so you can turn faster. Learned these tricks from Naska (check him out on KZbin).
