This is clear and simple, brief and to the point. It let us all understand that what we read...and, to a certain extent, what fiction we write....is open to interpretation. For example, one person might perceive that A is making something for B because A is giving B an object which is useful, for example, it might be a mixing spoon. Another person might see that object as being a weapon of some sort. Both are right for themselves, but a third person might, quite legitimately, disagree with both of them. Each person will have their own 'truth', but, hopefully, agree to disagree. A good writer will understand the wider context of what those words mean, or will mean. However, it is sometimes quite fascinating that an author might miss the significance of some item, some action, and a reader will understand something else about the possible symbolism. That's ok too.
@mistersato4114 жыл бұрын
I agree, BILL. I'm in the camp that believes that meaning belongs to the reader, not the author.

It is amazing how we use symbolism daily throughout our lives. Subconsciously we do our best to provide context for the symbolism we provide. One example of this is text messages. We often say things through text. However, the tone is often lost until after we add emojis to it. a Smiley face, a heart, or a crying face, are all part of the symbolism.

Very insightful. I've just subscribed and I've enjoyed a few of the videos you've posted - bitesize and concise, but very intricate. I was just wondering, in regard to symbolism.. what ways can you improve whether you're receptive to decoding symbols in texts/media? I feel I need to be in a particular mindset to achieve it, but any other time I enter something, it's with passivity. Thanks!

Literally ANYTHING can be a symbol, including a school locker. What matters is what you say it is a symbol for. What is a school locker like to you? What abstract idea is like that?

Question: Is there an official way to distinguish Symbols that are way more emotionally charged for a specific person than a Symbol that just entered their minds? Because I use a lot this word, and I'm starting to get sick of the lack of variety. I personally separated the "weight" of symbols into the words Badge and Emblem, but I'm not sure if there is already a therm to this situation. Somebody?

Proper symbols are used to associate an image with the realm of ideas as conceived by Socrates, Aristotle etc. this is no easy stuff to comprehend at all. Allegories are the same for political concepts and representations are the signs we use to convey the notion of love, passion, joy, sadness etc. Don't mix them up !

...or _maybe_ the author just meant that the curtains were f###ing blue. Don't get me wrong, I certainly embrace death of the author, but It _is_ possible to read too much into things.
@carriedoughitt90587 жыл бұрын
notoriouswhitemoth Yes, but the curtain could've been any color. There's nothing wrong with people finding meaning in the story. That and writers don't add pointless things to the plot like a colored curtain without trying to reveal something.
@notoriouswhitemoth7 жыл бұрын
+carrie doughitt Meaning is something you create, not something you discover - and not every word is necessarily a plot point. Go ahead and look for symbolism, but take responsibility for your own contributions. Don't attribute your interpretations to authorial intent.
@larissagault94333 жыл бұрын
@@carriedoughitt9058 as an author, i can confidently say that there isn’t always a reason behind deciding something simple like that. there isn’t always a reveal or a meaning behind it, and that’s completely fine-finding meaning behind it for the reader can be just as awesome!

Nice video but... this is not symbolism this is semiotics. Symbolism is a universal language that has no other knowledge prerequisites in its opperation other than you are human. It is the recognition of archetypes at a level of principles... ie the circle is probably the most powerful symbol there is, you don't need to know the name of a circle to know its qualities as experience. The circle does not actually exist as it has only x2D attributes.... it is only ever implied or represented. Yet symbolically it represents the unbroken whole...the completion, and the movement around its circumference is symbolic of time... the cycles of the day the year the century and so on.... Symbolisim could be said to be the bridge between the intellect of knowing and the experience of the manifest world of substance.
