Sympathetic vs parasympathetic nervous system (autonomic) nursing review on the anatomy, pharmacology, and physiology.
The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system are part of the AUTONOMIC nervous System, which is part of the PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM.
The peripheral nervous system arises out of the central nervous system, which is the brain and spinal cord.
The peripheral nervous system is divided into two parts: somatic (this controls our voluntary functions) and autonomic (this controls the involuntary functions of the internal organs and glands).
The autonomic system is unique because it has TWO neurons that synapse (come together) in an autonomic ganglion. Therefore, this system has a preganglionic and postganglionic neuron.
The sympathetic nervous system is known as the fight or flight system, while the parasympathetic is known as the rest and digest.
The sympathetic nervous system preganglionic neuron is made up of cholinergic fibers and releases the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. While its postganglionic neuron is made up of adrenergic fibers and releases the neurotransmitter norepinephrine.
The parasympathetic nervous system is slightly different because its postganglionic neuron is made up of cholinergic fibers and releases the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
In this video we will discuss sympathetic and parasympathetic pharmacology, which will include a discussion about sympathomimetics, parasympathomimetics, sympatholytics, and parasympatholytics drugs.

This video is making learning pharmacology easier and more sense. Now I can happily learn the side effects of drugs without wondering why and how to remember them. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Why they didnt teach us this way in school why they made everything mysterious and impossible to understand. you are my savor. You are the nurses Messiah lol. I can enjoy learning drugs now. love you.

Good day, Sarah! I have watched a lot of your lecture videos months prior to my NCLEX RN and I could say these really helped me a lot and I owe you for that! Your videos were very viewer friendly and I enjoyed learning with you! You have been part of my success! It's my first time taking the NCLEX RN and I passed at 75 questions! Thank you so much and I wish I could be just as skillful and knowledgable as you are!! God bless you!!! 😇

Thank you so much! I'm currently studying for a Pharm exam and feel a bit overwhelmed when it comes to the Sympathetic/Parasympathetic and Alpha/Beta "stuff". Your explanations and illustrations are clear and organized, which makes it much easier to wrap my head around. I am so relieved to have found a good video source! Now I can listen in my car, cooking, while cleaning etc. This is a game changer for me - when you're a single parent, working, and going to school, actually sitting down with a textbook is near impossible some days. Even worse when you're struggling to grasp certain concepts. Thank you, again!

Thank you again Professor! My book was so confusing, during your lecture my "light bulb" came on and shined so bright I got tears in my eyes. I really want to be a great Nurse and be able to educate my patients, friends, and family in a way they understand and can help themselves and others. Professor if I had the choice of going to a Beyonce concert or coming to your lecture I would most definitely pay for a ticket to your lecture instead. Thank you again. After I graduate and Pass my NCLEX I will sponsor you. I cannot thank you enough.

Hi Sarah! - I'm a Nursing student in my junior year and am currently taking Pharmacology 2 (My school splits it into 2 classes.) I just wanted to thank you for making this video! My professor makes powerpoints that only cover 1 class at a time (EX: Anticholinergics) and list each drug individually with each of their uses, side effects, etc..Personally, I found her method to be extremely confusing and I noticed I would quickly forget things, despite my constant reviewing of material. I was never one to use videos as a resource, but I found this to be EXTREMELY helpful in clarifying these topics. Now I can go into my final exam much more confident! Thanks again!! :D - Anthony

Dear Miss Sarah, thank you so much for making these videos. I was terrified of taking my first pharm test today (it's my first semester of nursing school) and thanks to your videos, in particular this one on parasympathetic and sympathetic, I got an 85%! Your video helped me look at drugs in an entirely different way, making it less important to memorize, and more important as to what effect they have on the body. You're my hero!

Ma'am This is Vignesh from INDIA , I truly loved this video...\\ You almost taught everything so easily that I did'nt need to spend 10-12 hours of lecture in college at all which was'nt this effective..\\ I can just say that video was enough effective that a student who merely could'nt categorize the drugs now know the Mechanism and side effects too..\\ I can just say a Thanks to you. And nothing more....\\
