MP3: symphonyofscien...
"Our Place in the Cosmos", the third video from the Symphony of Science, was crafted using samples from Carl Sagan's Cosmos, Richard Dawkins' Genius of Charles Darwin series, Dawkins' TED Talk, Stephen Hawking's Universe series, Michio Kaku's interview on Physics and aliens, plus added visuals from Baraka, Koyaanisqatsi, History Channel's Universe series, and IMAX Cosmic Voyage. The themes present in this song are intended to explore our understanding of our origins within the universe, and to challenge the commonplace notion that humans have a superior or privleged position, both on our home planet and in the universe itself.
RIP Dr. Sagan and Dr. Jastrow!
For more science remixes, check out symphonyofscien...
As always, view in HQ mode for better sound and visuals.
Enjoy!

Lyrics:
[Narrator]
With every century
Our eyes on the universe have been opened anew
We are witness
To the very brink of time and space
[Robert Jastrow]
We must ask ourselves
We who are so proud of our accomplishments
What is our place in the cosmic perspective of life?
[Carl Sagan]
The exploration of the cosmos
Is a voyage of self discovery
As long as there have been humans
We have searched for our place in the cosmos
[Richard Dawkins]
Are there things about the universe
That will be forever beyond our grasp?
Are there things about the universe that are
Ungraspable?
[Sagan]
One of the great revelations of space exploration
Is the image of the earth, finite and lonely
Bearing the entire human species
Through the oceans of space and time
[Dawkins]
Matter flows from place to place
And momentarily comes together to be you
Some people find that thought disturbing
I find the reality thrilling
[Sagan]
As the ancient mythmakers knew
We're children equally of the earth and the sky
In our tenure on this planet, we've accumulated
Dangerous evolutionary baggage
We've also acquired compassion for others,
Love for our children,
And a great soaring passionate intelligence
The clear tools for our continued survival
[Michio Kaku]
We could be in the middle
Of an inter-galactic conversation
And we wouldn't even know
[Sagan]
We've begun at last
To wonder about our origins
Star stuff contemplating the stars
Tracing that long path
Our obligation to survive and flourish
Is owed not just to ourselves
But also to that cosmos
Ancient and vast, from which we spring

To see the joy on Sagan's face at 2:53 brings tears to my eyes. He truly loved science and the cosmos and he couldn't contain it. It spilled out through his infectious personality and his facial expressions. A good man full of love and joy for what he did.

I used to watch these videos back when I was a teenager in school. Now I'm finishing my PhD, and whenever I'm having a bad time with my work, I find myself returning to them. They never fail to help me remember why I chose to go into science in the first place.

They were truly motivating. Grats on going for the PhD.. I'm nowhere near that, but just thinking about my problems.. and then zooming out into the vastness of what we know about space.. puts my mind more at ease. I think even Marcus Aurelius said in his meditations he even said to pause for a while and compare the size of your problems to the solar system.

Symphony of Science, I came back to school as a military vet of about the age of 28. I have discovered my love of math and science and I'm currently a senior in civil engineering. I am so grateful for your videos. I show them to my son all of the time. My real love is astronomy but I didn't want to ruin my hobby with real work! Please keep up the excellent work. Carl Sagan speaks, IMO, for the best of humanity. He is such a great storyteller and he makes being a human being so prestigious, even given our terrible track record. Let's all keep observing the beauty of the natural world, and look forward to a better future for the human species! This is of course after we accept the responsibility that we must take care of the Earth as well as we can; the Earth will be here long after us...it is indifferent. It is up to us to take care of the species on Earth, and to venture into the cosmos.

Think about this for a moment: You are currently a passenger (and, indeed, an integral crew member) on board a four-point-five billion-year-old, semi-self-sufficient spacecraft. This spacecraft flies in tight formation with billions of other craft--some, much, much smaller; some, much, much bigger--all relying on a shared external power source, which is billions of times the size of even the largest other ship in your formation. Your formation is just one in a grand fleet consisting of many billions of similar formations, all relying on an even greater shared external power source. Your fleet is currently travelling to intercept and join ranks with another similar fleet, billions of miles away. In billions of years, when the two fleets have successfully integrated, they will adopt a new course: a new mission--and they will continue travelling. United. *...And we keep killing each-other en masse to see whose imaginary friend is the best.*

Base it on string theory quarks have binding energy and are affected by all the four forces will have strung together and formed various baryons. Then bosons would influence it and cause the formation of the nucleus of atoms and so on. In string theory matter is just another form of energy so I quote "If nature chose a different set of numbers we would observe our universe very differently or we wouldn't be here at all"

I'm sorry but that does not make any sense. How could there be more stars than atoms when stars are made up of millions maybe even billions of atoms

Chibling I know right? Maybe I'm missing something here, but even if you discount non-stellar objects like planets, asteroids, dust clouds, etc... wouldn't that imply that some stars are made up of .... fewer than one atoms? Although I suppose things like neutron stars aren't really made up of atoms. But still. Anyone care to explain?

Disconnection from understanding allows each tentacle of the universe to create ever expanding and new experiences to learn from. Those who are watching those videos and ignoring each person around them are disconnected and unaware. What they need is love, attention, and encouragement. Judgement and separation from community will push them farther away from wanting to learn. We must change our education to nurture the budding of consciousness! It starts with you! I love you!
