thanks for the video....I have an f150 that I can't put more then a gallon in without clicking off. Disconnect charcoal canister and it still happened. It definitely not opening to let pressure through. Needed a good symptom video to confirm my suspicion. Thanks.

Really like your straight to the point video. Nice job! Questions: What conditions should be in place such that the PCM will open the EVAP purge solenoid valve while the EVAP canister vent solenoid is opened? i.e. I would think at idle the purge solenoid valve would be closed. Conversely at some higher RPM, with other certain conditions the purge solenoid valve would be opened and its open duration measured via the oxygen sensors (sort and long term fuel trims). I cannot find the DETAILED operation of the EVAP purge solenoid valve as controlled by the PCM (over all the engine speeds and loads)? I would expect the EVAP canister vent solenoid to be open at all times and only closed for a leak test by the PCM. I would also expect the EVAP canister vent solenoid to be open when the engine is off and car parked.

It varies depending on the year and manufacture. Here is an example for a Third-gen Chevrolet Camaro ..150 seconds have elapsed since the PCM entered closed loop. ..Coolant temperature is above 176 degrees F. (80 degrees C.). ..When the PCM is not enabling injector shut-off, such as on vehicles with traction control while one drive wheel is spinning. ..The idle contact switch in the IAC motor is open. ..Engine speed is above 1,100 rpm. ..The engine metal temperature sensor is not indicating excessive temperature. ..Low coolant level is not indicated.

@@HVAC_Mechanic Have 2004 Malibu Maxx 3.5L - summer conditions - Long Term Fuel Trims way negative (-25) on both banks - temp 180 - various RPM - coolant level to spec. When the PCM commands the EVAP purge solenoid to open, does the PCM also command the EVAP canister vent solenoid to close or open?

Going crazy. Have a evap issue with 02 Suzuki XL-7. Decided to replace the whole contraption to eliminate rusted evap lines and old hoses. The vent solenoid body definitely leaking. In my process I've found a small line coming from the fuel tank vent that goes to what looks like a check valve. Seems simple to just replace but not sure if it should really be a one way or a metered valve. Seems like open going toward tank and restricted going into larger line that goes toward charcoal cannister. Don't want to install a new one way check valve if it is supposed to allow air both ways. Also not sure if it is even needed if there is a evap solenoid doing this job already. Confusion as to if it is to hold back some pressure to stop the gas pump when filling. Not seeing this valve in any diagrams I find online... don't want to install something that may have been done previously in error...

There are differences between EVAP systems depending on the year, vehicle, and manufacturer; the only way to know is to find an EVAP diagram for the vehicle.

Thank you for this information. Currently still have a P1457 code even after replacing the charcoal canister and solenoid valve. No one rents a smoke tester, and the repair shops qoutes for the smoke test are between $150-$300. There has to be a better dyi for this issue. Any suggestions?

There is a clicking sound when the car is cranked when we first noticed it we were out of town, and they said that it was afuel tank vent valve. The only gas vapor comes out of the vent valve. It should not be liquid.

How about diagnosis the opposite where the automatic shut off doesn't activate soon enough so that everytime you fill up a small amount of gas spills out before it shuts off.

if you do a smoke test and smoke comes out the valve, its not necessarily bad because it is normally open until it gets a signal, correct?

Yes, this is true. I should have clarified this better. You can turn it off by adding power, usually with a scan tool, or be aware of its location and that smoke will come out of it.

The engine should still start. If the purge valve (separate from the vent valve) is stuck open, sometimes, it can affect the engine and may cause longer start times, but usually, the engine will start.

Another symptom you forgot was a ticking sound which sometimes sounds like a rod or valve knock
