Hey Andy, I just watched that video 10mins ago, congratulations Sir, am glad you enjoyed it... of course, a modern Milwaukee8 Harley will always be a 'friendly puppy', the offer is always open to come down and take a ride on a 'proper' Harley with a carburetor! If it's any consolation, although it's two decades old, it does have Ohlins suspension and Brembo brakes, the one thing about old Harleys is you can improve them beyond belief and tune them to how you want them... take care and have a fabulous weekend, all the best to you and the family!

I don't find the results of this test as surprising now as I might have done a few years ago. Totally different kettle of fish but I ride a 2016 Fireblade and until last year it was always main dealer serviced simply for warranty purposes and the dealer has always been good with me. But, in 2019 when I serviced the bike through my business and changed the oil I used a K&N filter because it was convenient and Castrol Power 1 Racing fully synthetic - of the same viscosity as recommended by Honda. Both of my Blades I have owned from new, 2014 and 2016 models have had the exact same in terms of servicing from the dealer. After changing the oil to Castrol, the gearbox is unbelievably smooth! I was in disbelief the first ride out. It makes me question, what exactly are the main dealer using? Some form of cheap bulk oil, semi synthetic perhaps? I've no idea but I would highly recommend anyone to question what oil they are using and look at suitability.

First, that is a bad ass Dyna with what it looks like an S7S carburetor. Second, that was an amazing ride for history. Third, I cannot agree with you anymore on the dedicated gearbox oil. I use Syn3 for motor and primary for convenience because I have Harley dealers everywhere, but use their gearbox oil because it is quieter and thicker. In my opinion it just make sense. I am on my fourth Harley an I know its right. A warm salute to you from across the pond, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Thanks for your great videos.

Hey brother, great to hear from you and thank you for your kind words on the Dyna, I ride an M8 StreetBob these days and it's nothing like the legendary charm of a slow revving twin cam and that was, indeed, an S&S Super E carb, a massive investment, but it woke the bike right up and truly got the best from the performance! Glad to hear you share the common agreement of dedicated gear oil... take care and ride safe in beautiful VA.

Gotta love the one and half lane roads. I experienced them many years ago in my left hand drive American minivan. Faced a Transit van heading in the opposite direction, both of us at the speed limit. We both realized the road was too narrow to complete the pass, breaking to a stop with our side view mirrors just inches apart. We both reached out and retracted our mirrors and carried on. Beautiful country.

Different bike, different engine, but . . . that sound. 30 yrs ago I ran around on a shop bike for a couple of months, a late five speed shovel FXRS, it ran & sounded just the same as yours does now - except for having TQF in it's gear bag! Loved that bike, they then swapped it for a WG that needed work & fettling; having finally got that sorted, I rode back down to find that Simon had sold the RS to a punter! In a fit of pique, I grabbed an 883 with burnt out wiring, hot wired it with cooker cable & thrashed the living daylights out of it all the way back to Newark - the blasted thing took it all & never missed a beat . . . Months later, after fitting a brand new loom & mucho fettling, that one went back too, & was immediately sold to some yuppie, who then wrote it off the next day by trying to park under a Routemaster . . . the real sad part is, he limped away with cuts & bruises. Bikes are like aircraft, the biggest danger to their welfare is usually their owners. Have a great w/e : ) x

Hey Del, mixed bag of things to say. Nice countryside. Those rolling hills and pastures look a lot like east Germany at the Czech border. Some of those roads are very narrow. Good thing Ken Block doesn't live near by. Good to see the crucifix hanging on the bars. I wear one religiously when I ride. No pun intended. And finally, did you record the audio for that ride on a separate device? The engine sounds overlapped perfectly between scene changes. Well done. The perfect video to quietly eat lunch by. Thanks.

Hey Joe, always a pleasure to hear from you Sir... and yes, we are priviledged to live in a beautiful place indeed, never tire of crusing the lanes, even on a dull day! Yes, I made the video using 3 files, two cameras with sound muted, and the entire sound data was captured on a Zoom H2n handy recorder... and to keep it away from any wind rush, I tuck it in the back of my shirt just above my belt... and as you can hear, it picks up the sound perfectly! The rest is just a 12hr editing marathon!!... dropping the sound data in first, and then line up the two camera files above it, and then just align them as you go along... pretty easy once you get the hang of it, just time consuming, but well worth it... thank you for taking the time to say, when it gets noticed it makes it all worthwhile.

See the Project Farm videos for oil testing, he had Amsoil in first place and Pennzoil in second place. I go to Walmart and buy half 10w-40 Valvoline regular motorcycle oil, and half Valvoline 20w-50 full synthetic motorcycle oil for my 2 Japanese motorcycles. The regular oil makes the clutches feel firmer with less slip, and the synthetic oil makes the shifting feel smoother. There is a Project Farm video where he tested mixing a crazy number of oils that no one would ever do, and it tested fine.

As you know i have an FXR 1989 and love her to bits , when i first bought her i was advised by an old skool bloke in his shed that just use 1 oil as bike will be used to it , hence i did anyways long story short i met quite a few fxr owners on forums and bike meets and one guy in particular who lives not to far from me said that if i put in the right oil in the right part of the bike i would notice the difference, i was a bit apprehensive but he assured me that it would make a difference so i bit the bullett and changed them ,yes it was more expensive but what a difference it has made she runs smoother ,gear change is slicker and not the clunk i was used to and all in all a better bike , we have now become really good friends and ride together when we can ,

I usually run Mobil 1 V-twin in the motor, Royal Purple in the trans, and just regular Harley Formula+ gear/primary lube in the primary. Never saw any point in using a $14 or 15 dollar synthetic oil in the primary as the Harley stuff is $8 a quart. To me that’s pretty damn cheap and it does the job. Saves a few dollars every change. Plus it’s rated for 10k mile interval per Harley.

Nice vid mate. I'll hopefully be moving up from a 125cc very soon and cruisers appeal to me but I was concerned about the practicality, handling etc. on these sort of rides. This has reassured me.

Hi mate, first of all, congratulations on moving up from a learner bike, if you think about it, bikes can be grouped in to 4 categories, cruisers, sports, adventure and nakeds... and if you can get yourself a test ride on a few bikes, you'll know instantly what you feel happiest on! So go chat with a few dealers and enjoy the process buddy, have fun, let us know how you get on!

What a great place to ride. I wish I could bring my old Honda across the pond. I would have trouble with the skinny lanes and riding on the wrong side, though.

Nice bit of info on the oils👍as an engine reconditioner (everything from 2stroke lawn mowers to D10 diesel caterpillars) I can vouch for the benefits of good and correct application of oils. Personally, I changed the family car (petrol 2ltr) my landrover discovery Td5 (2.5ltr diesel) and my BMW k-bikes over to amsoil over 20 years ago and have never looked back -even had great success in my VW 2ltr air cooled campervan (running around in summer temperatures here in Australia will sort out any oils that are not up to scratch) amsoil has and still is protecting my vehicles engines, transmissions etc. So many benefits you can't go wrong 👍(sounds like an advertisement, but it's not)😂 re: warming up and riding off - yeah always a good idea - I'd be mostly concerned about crankshaft big-end wear plus piston wear on a cold motor. Thanks for the video bro 👍

Beautiful old country ! here in Canada we have to be quite careful on narrow grown in roads like that, easy to find yourself staring at a 7 ft tall (at the antlers) buck deer or worse yet a monster moose !!!

Nice ride, great filming. I've always thought it better to use the separate oils. Bike sounds good. Cheers.

Dont know where you live, but it is beautiful. Great video sir. Amsoil is a great product, and have it in my M8 softail. Gonna try Motul synthetic, and see how it is.

Can’t comment on the oil but the ride was very nicely shot with great sound too. Still investing in cameras to do this as well as I’d like. 👍

HI DEL put a few miles on bike now I just changed the gearbox oil, yes very much a difference better changes both up and down smoother.Just one thing tho what you described as gearbox backlash don't know if you use the term (hunting). at the lower speeds that still there but convinced that's not as pronounced as it was.Can you tell me if the oil purge procedure is the same for my bike 2004 heritage softail classic six speed injection that's getting done next .Gearbox oil change very happy with outcome.
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
Right on Arthur, your motor is the exact same unit as my 05' fatboy i used to make the purge video itself... so you can use that as a guide sure thing.. The thicker oil won't make a 16 year old transmission new again.. but as you've found, it will dampen out a lot of the usual hunting you get on those bikes.

Valve Tran noise? Good thing, bad or doesn’t matter? Why would it be louder?Sticking with amsoil or switching back to syn3? Thanks......👍
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
Not bad at all, just a little more audible mechanical rustling from the top end, not harmful and nope, I'll be sticking with Amsoil, too much bad rep on Syn3 these days.

Sure thing mate, felt quite conspicious actually, but only the Aria carries the camera so well! Normally an open face on the Harley, specially this time of year and if it's cold, two scarves! But needs must, the video was more important on this occasion, Hope you're keeping well there, D&Px

A very nice video. It has been a long, long time from my last "go for a ride, ride" work & home, that is me 5-6 days a week, for the last several years. I do have the next oil changes on the shelf, 50K miles is only 2K away... & after that, I think will try the AMS oil, engine oil. I change every 2,500 miles & yes, I know the book says 5K is fine, I just don't trust that for engine oil & filter change interval. I like clean oil, for a long life. I have seen the company go 12, 15, 20k miles, between changes, & I am on my 3rd FedEx truck now. Oil is cheap, engines & transmissions are not, change oil often is my moto... clean oil for trouble free operation :-) Love your videos :-)

I can't argue with your philosophy there Sir, it's a known historic fact that American war ships used to run Harley big twin engines as their bilge pump drives, and they would work on a constant oil change basis from a 200 gallon tank and would usually last at least 100k hours before they were worn out... so you're dead right, oil is everything!
