I really needed to test my new Arriflex, so I thought, what better way to do that than with an old Georg Jensen 24 FPS sync motor I had lying around. Let's see just how well (or not) it performs.
Vidion 2 500T/7218 16mm film processed by me in a double batch of CineStill ECN-2 Cine Simplified 2-Step formula.
Audio recorder - Tascam DR-05X: amzn.to/3dF1gZg
Microphone - BOYA BY-M1 Lavalier: amzn.to/3r8TIB2
Film Scanner: MovieStuff Retroscan Universal Mark I (2K)
Stabilized in Davinci Resolve.

I love how rock solid the footage is, no perf wavering, no jittery frame line. Literally PERFECT. The flickering light sucks tho lol.

Yes, I love the stability you get with a registration pin camera. That light flicker is pretty annoying, and there's no doubt it has to do with my processing and the age/storage of this film. I've processed a ton in 50' lengths but I'm still pretty new to 100'. It's a whole new beast and best to start with the chemicals in the tank already as it takes quite a while to fill through the top. I think I'm going to try a whole new workflow on the next roll.

Your sync is spot-on, Mike. Great job. You can barely hear the camera in the background. I gotta believe noise reduction in Audition would get rid of that. Piper is adorable!

Thanks so much Frank!! I tell her about everyone that's mentioned her. Yes, I believe you're right, a little touch up and it'd probably all be gone. For reference, the camera was about 5' - 6' away from me. I really believe that with the right shotgun mic, towel over the camera, distance from the subject and a little help in Audition, it's definitely possible.

I would love to shoot on an SR, I have a couple of friends that have but I never quite got there :( I have a CP-16 and I really like it, nice and quiet but I wish they took 100' loads (other than in the magazine). Question, what are your rendering settings to maintain the detail. I made a grainy stop motion and the footage was a challenge to render and the result came out muddy.
@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 2 жыл бұрын
I typically scan and render from the scanner as either an uncompressed MOV file or a TIFF image sequence. From there, everything gets rendered (during editing) as AVC .mp4 files. I use a decent bit rate to help maintain detail.

Mike, what’s your opinion on the Beaulieu R16s? I think I can get one of those for the fraction of the cost of some of these other 16mm reflex viewing cameras. I hear people rave about their Super-8s being the best ever made too.
@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 2 жыл бұрын
Beaulieu made gorgeous cameras with insanely nice optics. I would put the R16 in my top 5 16mm cameras in terms of how it looks. As far as the pictures, well, I've owned a couple of them but sadly never shot any footage with them. It was 25+ years ago and I had them because I loved they way they looked. The footage I've seen has been great and coincidentally, I've had my eye on a couple of them recently. Be aware, they are not quiet, are apparently prone to a few issues and do not have native crystal motors. I love the 200' magazines too!!

@@Filmboy24 I figured it would be a cheaper alternative to get a working reflex model 16mm because a Bolex equivalent would cost $1000 more. Doing my research for Super 8 cameras it’s safe to say I’ll stick with a Canon. A Nikon r8 and r10 are good too I hear.

Question: can you use this audio syncer for a Bell and Howell Filmo 240 16mm single perf film camera as well or is there another audio syncer you can get for that film camera?
@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, there really isn't any sync motors that I know of for that camera. Syncing sound with one of those cameras is possible, but it would be quite tedious. I've done videos on doing it with non-sync cameras. Time consuming but possible.

Beautiful looking camera. I received the 8mms and one Fujica super 8 sound and I can't wait to get a few 16 and super 16mms, mainly Arri, Bolex and K2. The Bolex K2 I got doesnt seem to work, ive tried the shutter modes and all buttons and it wont wind further. Looks like its all wound but the shutter wont move the motor. Any ideas? I changed the lock button from blocked to single frame and regular, but nothing. by the way, how come you are getting light leaks? Was it not sealed if you were just testing or is that some other reason? I mean if the flashing is light leaks

I used a DZS 12 Amp BUCK voltage down converter to regulate my 12v battery voltage down to 8.4 Volts for my ARRI 16S. They cost about $11 but you would need to provide a case and power plugs. I had a link but youtube keeps deleting my post.

Hey Alonzo, if it's the crystal motor you're talking about, I got lucky with mine, it was in the bottom of a box of Arriflex magazine parts I bought a long time ago on eBay. I've only seen one on there since but I do see Tobin crystal motors on there from time to time.

What oil would you use to oil an Arriflex 16S, and how much?
@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Donald, that's a good question. I haven't actually oiled my camera, just the magazine & torque motor. I used 1 drop of lightweight (3 in 1) oil for the gear shafts in the torque motor and Arriflex's own "Special Grease" for the drive gear. No more than one drop of oil (I even wiped a little away). Here is a great resource for servicing an Arri S: cinetinker.blogspot.com/2019/
