Subject suggestion. I would like to hear both of you take a classic say, for example Ode to Billie Joe, Gentle on my mind, apart and speak to what makes those songs amazing. Thanks much.

@@SongTownUSA Have you tried using "AI". What have you learned from AI as a songwriter? Is there anything potentially interesting about AI songs?

Hey guys. Loved this video. I’m a singer, songwriter , guitar player from the great white North (Winnipeg) and I took to heart a lot of what you said and very much agree with you. I did come to this video from the “ten mistakes…” video which was also great. The point(s) I that are bouncing around on my brain are about the time frame thing and the first person/second person thing. Maybe I am an exception but I like ambiguity in a song because it makes me think harder about the context and draws me into it to try to figure out the message, assuming there is one. One fine example I can think of is a song by Tom Waits (big fan here) called “Hold On” which jumps all around in all these areas but somehow you get the story perfectly after a couple of listens. I’m not doubting your wisdom I’m just pointing out that everyone listens a bit differently to lyrics. Truthfully, I barely ever listen to commercial radio but when I do, I more often disappointed with the cookie cutter stuff that is coming out from the big machine. I’m more inclined to search out old stuff or lesser know writers/singers. Anyway, blah blah ..thanks for doing these videos. They are inspirational and down to earth. Cheers.

I've heard you guys say this before but this time it reminded me of something my ex said to me. You guys said something like "You'll never be... whoever you're comparing yourself to... so focus on being you and using your voice " etc. Well, a good while ago I was reading something out loud to my now ex-wife that was very similar, and before I could finish the phrase she jumped in with, "So why bother then?" Wow! That was a huge off-ramp sign for our relationship. Thanks for sharing your decades of experience with us. It always inspires me to keep on my path; wherever it may lead.

How familiar are you guys with the songwriters of British bands from the 80's ? Here's some examples of one's that I enjoy. XTC , The Blue Nile, Squeeze, Gram Parker, Elvis Costello, The Clash, Kate Bush, The English Beat, Thomas Dolby, Nick Lowe...... What the above list has in common is that musically and lyrically they're all top notch with original sound all their own.

I know all those bands and artists well except for Blue Nile. I'll check them out! ~CM

@@SongTownUSA The Album 'Hats' by the Blue Nile is my recommendation artists like Rickie Lee Jones Phil Collins Joni Mitchell were fans of this Scottish band. Of all the ones I've listed these guys have a vibe that is truly unique. I love the song headlights on the parade from the hats album.
