SYND 28 8 76 MUHAMMAD ALI AND KEN NORTON PRESS CONFERENCE

(28 Aug 1976) World heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali and his challenger Ken Norton were the guests at America's National Press Club on Friday (Aug 27) for a press conference, previewing their world title fight on september 28. the fight is being held at the Yankee Stadium In New York-- the first time for many years that a world heavyweight fight has been held in New York because of disputes in the american boxing world. Ken Norton became famous four years ago when he broke Ali's jaw and scored a points win in a non-title fight. Ali later gained his revenge, but he wants to erase the memory of that first fight once and for all.
As usual, Ali was full of talk at the press conference, but Norton tried one new way of keeping him quiet

Norton credits Ali for jump starting his career. Ali gave him a shot--likely not believing Norton could beat him--and lost, but gave him another shot--after winning their rematch, which padded Norton's bank account. Rumor has it that Ali called George Foreman to ask him to fight Norton before he'd agree to a rematch with Foreman. Ali did not want to fight Norton because it would always go the distance but he also feared a rematch from Foreman because the tricks he used the first time might not work again.

Ali was slurring speech BEFORE the Thrilla in Manila. His damage came NATURALLY NOT from Boxing. You are right though, his speech is slurring here. The Man was fighting sick for 3 years and should have been stopped from going into the Ring.

maximiliano monopoli he started slurring very slightly after Frazier 1 tbh but it want very noticeable. But the damage was certainly not natural. You can see something similar happening to Shane Mosley today.

I’ve never noticed any slurring in Ali’s speech until AFTER the Manila fight. I believe a lot of damage was caused in that fight.

@@thespy7795 it came from all the headshots he took dr Pacheco said ali showed initial signs of brain damage after fight of the century and had recommended ali to retire then but he continued and then he left ali when he took the fight with shavers

One relatively unknown circumstance regarding this fight was Ali got severe blood clots in his legs from being kicked for 15 rounds by Japanese wrestler "Anoki" where Ali made a ton of money for having a "mixed" fight boxing versus wrestling 40 years before McGregor and Mayweather. So Ali was still dealing with the blood clots when he fought Norton.

Ali and Norton seem to get on well here but there was clearly bad blood between them at the end of the 11th and 15th rounds. So what happened between this and the fight? Did Norton react to Ali’s talking during the fight with a few insults of his own and Ali didn’t like it?

No. It was Norton misled by his corner that he was ahead...when they were even. Norton counted His chickens before they hatched..coasted last few rounds... And you don't just win a championship..you have to take it OFF the champ... He did not. Instead started cussing at Ali, looking less like a champion in the judges eyes...they made up. Norton was GOOD people.

I don’t know if AJ or Fury would have stopped Norton(although Fury would easily outpoint him off of height and style alone. Wilder likely would have as Ken never did well against big punchers(although with Wilders limited skill set you never know. Klitschko would have likely K.O.’d Norton.

You don't seem to be aware of the fact that a round is 3 minutes long. Norton got knocked out in the 2nd round. So, just going by those facts, it would seem that Norton lasted more than 3 minutes, which renders your statement false. Also, by your "logic", Frazier, who got destroyed by foreman twice, doesn't compare to Ali, even though he actually beat him in their first fight, lost a debatable decision in the second, and damn near killed Ali in the third.

Ali got beat up in that fight, took a body shot from Norton in the 6th which doubled him over. Ali lost that fight badly. I honestly think he Should’ve retired after shocking the world against foreman

Denis Sulovic Thats an unfair comparison, wladimir got knocked clean out in his losses. Wladimir went to war against Joshua and retired. Let’s look at Ali , now Ali was taken beatings over 15 rounds no less, because Ali had a better chin than Wladimir and more heart. Ali would hang around getting punched by big hitters for 45 minutes! Ali loses a 15 round decision to a prime Frazier, loses over 12 to Norton, wins a tough rematch against Norton. Beating foreman would’ve saved Ali the beating he got in the thrilla in Manila, shavers, the Norton 3rd fight. I happen to believe all of Ali’s work after the foreman win. Didn’t do anything to enhance his legacy. Frazier comes out with more props in their 3rd fight. Ali remains the only man to lose the title to a 7 fight novice. Ali shocked the world in beating a foreman who seemed unbeatable, avenged his only 2 losses and could’ve probably ended up in better health.

Norton destroyed Ali in this fight. But, as they did with the Jimmy Young fight, the judges gave it to Ali. Ali knew he lost. Dundee knew he lost. The crowd in Yankee Stadium knew he lost. Sports writers across the country used this decision, to once again, condemn the sport of boxing.
