Surely any wind from the sides (not due to forward motion) will cause steering forces? Any variability in the wind will require constant rudder trimming (in addition to anything the ship would normally experience due to it's "sail area")

More or less conventional sails are coming back, too. Arianespace uses _Canopée,_ a ship with deployable aircraft wing like sails to transport its Ariane 6 rocket across Atlantic to their launch site in Kourou, French Guiana. The vessel is expected to save up to 60% of fuel in optimal conditions, or about 30% on average.

What makes those rotors rotate in the first place? Do they need external power from fossil fuels/battery to do this?

yes they need a motor. But what you give as input, you get much more as an output

2:15: Buckau: 37 kW electric propulsion system for the rotors. Normally, they are electrically powered and the electricity comes from the diesel generator of the ship. But if there is enough wind from the right direction, you get much more propulsion from it than by putting this power into the propeller. But of course, it's a disadvantage to "normal" sails. Advantages are more propulsion force per wind profile and an easy control of this force by changing the rotation speed and rotation direction of the rotors.

Why use Power to Rotate them? Make the Top 1/4 of it as a Vertical Windmill and Have a Spiral in the Inside, where the Exhaust Heat goes up, wich makes them Spin even More.

That’s pretty cool, why haven’t I heard more about these?

I have one suggestion, Can we use this rotar for tornado 🌪. It must rotate in reverse direction with multiple fan like branches of tree 🌳. It must work more on ground to destroy wind energy motion created by tornado 🌪. It's not difficult job to rotate fan in reverse direction of tornado. Wind energy of tornado will give energy to destroy tornado. Please think about it. Jay bharat.
