Having played through FFX again, it's interesting to note the parallels between the world of Spira and that of the 4th Astral Era. Sin acts as almost a living Umbral Calamity.

I quite like this video but if I may offer a critique, it is that you left out ancient Bozja (unless you'd rather do a video solely on its history and this was meant to be a solely Eorzean focused video). Its events prior and following the 4th era are relatively decently documented. Additionally, the Onishishu of the Far East who inherited Allagan technology.

Question: An Umbral Calamity can happen without a world shard rejoining, right? The crystal tower sinking didnt seem to align. Edit: I'm finding some sources saying that the 3rd shard was rejoined? Is that true? Is there any information about what the ascians were doing to trigger events in the 3rd world shard?

What causes the calamities. What do the Ascians actually do

They orchestrate events to happen a certain way in both a Shard and the Source so that it culminates in a disastrous event borne from imbalanced aether reaching its zenith in the corresponding shard

Their approach has to be very precise and twofold. First, they need to make sure they can orchestrate an event on the Source that will react to a given aetherial imbalance. For the 4th calamity, they planned the shockwave from the Crystal Tower. Then, they need to somehow flood a shard with that type of aether, priming it to rejoin. They tipped the Third shard to earth. Once that's done, they set off the event they planned in the Source, giving the built-up aether a catalyst to surge from the shard into the source. If they were imprecise on either of those things, they would receive no calamity. Worse yet, they might end up with something like the Thirteenth, where its excess of astral-aligned aether collapsed inward, making the shard impossible to rejoin.
