I listen to the three segments and I not only found it GOOD... IT ACTUALLY WORKS!!! While watching your tutorial, I installed Synology surveillance station and a camera successfully,and also did the scheduling, the detection area and the notification portions. Excellent turotial.

Thanks for the video. I had a Geovision DVR card for years, but now I'm looking for something new. Don't want to pay for cloud storage and don't want the cameras that only do motion detection. Also don't want to be strapped to just one brand of camera, so the Synology solution is a good one. Your video was great! Hey, I know you paid for the review but you did a super good job of explaining the software. Thanks again.

Lon, great review. I will recommend this to a client, I am sure they will like it. Has everything you need for small scale surveillance. If I not mistaken there are some areas that have "porch pirates" so surveillance will protect you from that.

The Synology NAS is working great so far. The only limitations of the Synology Surveillance Center are: Only 2 cameras allowed (without further license fees). Must use Firefox or IE11 to monitor the cameras.

Hey Lon, i think this the setup i'm after, especially because i have a Synology NAS. Thanks for the extensive review/explanation. I had one slightly odd question... is it possible to automate turning the camera on and off depending on a few variables, mainly accounting for 2 people and if they're out of the house or not? The dream would be when either my girlfriend or I return home, the camera turns a full 180 or faces up, then turns off, (mainly just for the slight paranoia of big brother-ifying my house!) then visa versa - once we're both out of the house, the camera turns on, and turns back to its 'surveillance' position... Thinking of placing the camera just in the living room. Also wondering after all that, to turn the camera on when one of us plugs in our phone to charge for the night when we go to sleep. Is there a way to attach an IFTTT style bit of code to this? Possibly even mix it with a smart plug or something that just flat out turns the camera on/off and takes into account 2 people to make all this happen? I've seen it's easy enough with one person... but accounting for 2 people seems to be a real hassle. Using some sort of Smart-things hub could be the go... but i feel like i'm going down a very complicated home-security rabbit hole here. Would love to know your thoughts of how to achieve what i'm after? Thanks for your time. And if that's all a bit much to answer - keep doing what you're doing dude, loving your work. :-)

Just got done building a home, and I wired for POE surveillance cameras outside. I currently use a Synology DS215j (in raid 1) with 4TB WD red drives (thanks to a previous video/recommendation from you). If I were looking to put out six surveillance cameras, do you think I would be better suited to use this system, or should I look for an all in one surveillance system package? ie Lorex

With a 4 bay synology DS918+, would it be better to run a Plex Media Server and Surveillance Station w/ 4 or less cameras by creating one large volume with Raid 10 or would it be better to create two volumes (one for Plex and one for surveillance) using Raid 1 for each pair? I don't see any addressing of performance hit with surveillance station on top of a Plex Media Server? Thanks!

Hi. I;m trying to setup cameras to detection motion and alert me (which works) however I only want to notified at certain times of the day - mainly times when our surgery is closed. So if motion occurs M-F after 6PM and before 6AM I want to be notified. Any motion inside on a Saturday/Sunday I also want to be notifed. Outside of those times I don't need to be notified. I want to record 24/7 however. I cannot find where I can set this up.

Lon, I’m assuming your cameras are all WiFi and not hard wired? With all your excellent tech savvy, perhaps you know how to connect a POE switch to the Synology NAS for surveillance station? I ask because let’s say 5 camera go to the POE and use only one cat5/6 from POE to the router, which would hopefully them be seen by the Synology NAS. With all cameras running isn’t that a lot of bandwidth over one GB cable along with what ever else is being done by the NAS?
@LonSeidman7 жыл бұрын
Yes this is a very good question - the way I demonstrated it here the cameras are transmitting back to the NAS all the time and whatever bitrate those cameras are transmitting at will impact the maximum throughput of the NAS. That said some of these have dual NICs so you could dedicate one of them for surveillance station - so you could create a network segment just for cameras. One thing I might explore in a future video is using the camera's motion detection hardware so they only transmit when they detect movement.

I updated my Mac to version 10.13.5 and then ( I think that was the reason) I lost my ability to only do motion detection with my two cameras. Now my synology nas will only record constantly. Also the synology Surveillance station is evidently not compatible with this operating system. Looks like only a PC is. I can use the surveillance station client however. Its very confusing. Thanks

I have two cameras, and both are set to record on motion. But only one of them sends a push notification to the Android DS cam app when there is motion. So far I can't figure out why only one sends the push. Any ideas? One is a foscam bullet and one is an axis dome. Let me know if the model numbers would help anyone. One is many years old (foscam) and one is new, not sure if that matters. I did make sure it wasn't triggering based on and digital inputs etc. I have used both detection from camera and detection from surveillence station. UPDATE: Oh, just figured it out. It's the "edit schedule" button when you select motion detection item. In there I had one camera allowing all the time and one never allowing.

I am reading way too many reliability issues with Synology products. I will build my own 10 Core Xeon E5 with 64GB and GPU. I didnt really want to use Blue Iris, but it seems to be the best options. I hope at some point they will have a linux distro specifically created to run natively. Until then, Win10 is my best worst option.

How much is one licence?
@Oregonian18 жыл бұрын
Licenses for 2 cameras are included for no charge. Amazon sells licenses for additional cameras for $55.99 per license. Or you can buy a bundle of licenses to get them a little less expensive per license. www.amazon.com/Synology-Camera-License-Pack-CLP1/dp/B001MJ0JAO/ref=s9_simh_gw_g421_i1_r?_encoding=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=&pf_rd_r=4KFKJ2HVSX3XS4048RAD&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=a6aaf593-1ba4-4f4e-bdcc-0febe090b8ed&pf_rd_i=desktop

Nice video !!!! I have two Foscam camera`s (FI9805W and FI9831W) all works fine; exept.... (as always) The synology does record allways, continues, I deleted the schedule (grey) on the place as in the video, tested it to fill in a block of hours, filled in a block of "green" but whatever I fill in; it just records both camera`s, all day long. I see on the small square on the thumbnail that it is half green half grey looks like there is motion detected. Also the recording on the camera settings self are "off" but the NAS records all day everything... Anyone?

What if the "event" was somebody steeling the Synology? Seriously, the most valuable things are in my office (including DiskStation). If somebody breaks in, isn't the footage gone?
@LonSeidman7 жыл бұрын
Yes but you could use mirroring or a backup strategy to dump footage to another synology or to the cloud
@Traveler-PKK7 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that it get's backed up to the Cloud Storage on your Synology. So, you still have visibility once you sign in to our Cloud Back up via any internet site. Also, you can buy another DS218 and update automatically into this one at a remote locations or a hidden location in your home.
