Broadly there are three different types of symbiosis: - Mutualism: both parties benefit from the interaction. - Commensalism: one party benefits but neither harms nor aids the other. - Parasitic: one party benefits at the expense of another. I imagine the Turtle - Mirelurk relationship could be either mutualistic (adding strength and opposable thumbs to the clutch in return for better hunting conditions/protection in numbers) or commensurate (the turtle benefits from a safer environment and better access to food or the Mirelurks have a safer clutch and are simply not on the menu for the turtle. Could also work if one of them is not able to exploit certain parts of the prey like the bone marrow.) It could also be parasitic in that the turtle is able to feast on the prey of the Mirelurks or on the Mirelurks themselves if it goes hungry. Your intimidation factor would fit into that.

I would think that their situation more mirrors the "alpha animal" mentality of the most successfully aggressive creature emerging at the top of the unusual social hierarchy they've developed noted that wolves dont actually do this in the wild, but rather the observed animals were not related or in the same pack and therefore the largest and most aggresive specimens being more dominant, similar to this situation
@Salted_Fysh3 жыл бұрын
@@TheBigFormerlyPurpleT that is a possiblity. Definitely works for FO3. Though I find it hard to imagine that a King could compete with a Queen strength wise. But yeah, pairing up makes sense. Honestly, from a realistic perspective and from what we see in the games, they should all be dying out from hunger anyway due to a massive lack of food. The food chain is almost entirely carnivores, and the energy transfer ratio in carnivores is extremely inefficient while ruminants don't really have much to munch on in the nuclear wasteland depicted in the games. But we have ghouls who, depending on the situation, can survive hundreds of years without any access to food, Super mutants who are somehow able to cover their metabolic needs from munching upon a few humans and giants insects, which are somehow able to absorb enough oxygen without access to lungs (insects absorb oxygen through the skin). A lot of that is probably down to the simple limitations of making a game, but it's fairly safe to say that realism doesn't play a very important role here. 😬 So in that sense you are right, there is little deficit from pairing up and a definite benefit in additional security.

Possible idea as to why the various Mirelurk species are considered Mirelurks, but Fog Crawlers/Giant Hermits/Anglers aren't, beyond all three only seeming to exist in Far Harbor. The Mirelurk species ,as mentioned in the video, live in a symbiotic relationship of sorts. They don't show aggression to each, a tleast not that we see. They nest near each other and generally work together. This isn't true of the Far Harbor sea critters, not as far as I remember. So Mirelurk could just refer to the "faction" of sea creatures that share a symbiotic relationship with each other, regardless of why they share this relationship.

I like your theory but the time periods are so stupid
@brockschannel39274 ай бұрын
@@cnut7383 why? The devonian and carboniferous periods were the hayday of large amphibians,so it would likely be the time they originated from.
@cnut73834 ай бұрын
@@brockschannel3927 perhaps they did originate then but idk so did all other life living today. 500 million years is a long long time i just think its pointless to mention it. if they did evolve then are you suggesting they remained the same for all this time?

I always thought that the Fallout 4 Mirelurk, and the Mirelurk Queen are different species due to their difference in tails, height, shell, and abilities. Since we never see a mirelurk hatchling with a pointy tail Which makes one wonder why these Mirelurks are spreading the eggs of another species throughout the wasteland. If that's the case, where do the normal Mirelurks breed in Fallout 4? Or am i just completely wrong, and the gender differences where forgotten during development?

It's Bethesda they forgot to give me the will to care about the story, so they may have forgotten to gender the hatchlings

@@unoriginalperson72 Good point.
@nodaerT3 жыл бұрын
@@oddtomato1049 Actually there are two different types of hatchling. A Spawn and the common hatchling. The spawn are larger, have pointed tails and are rarer. My theory is the queen is the female of the species. Much larger for her own protection. She lays eggs and is defended by the males. Spawn are female, rarer, larger, become queens, etc. Normal hatchlings become either normal males or hunters. Softshells are adolescent males. Normal Mirelurk males are males who kill or collect food, they are also charged with defending eggs and the females. Hunters are fertile males who are charged with finding other females to breed with. In this way Mirelurks are like ants but with a slight difference in that the males are the workers and warriors.
@oddtomato10493 жыл бұрын
@@nodaerT The slight problem with this theory is that the Spawn's Tail are identical to the Hatchlings. But then again, the Hermit Crab spawn also looks like a Mirelurk Hatchling but red. So it could just be pure Laziness on Bethesda's part.

I think your mudskipper is a very likely candidate. Despite your reservations, there's strong evidence quadripeds evolved from a mudskipper-like ancestor, and aquatic mammals (with a single tail) were once terrestrial quadripeds.

I think it'd be neat if the Kings worked like this. The King can protect the queen and her children with his ranged attacks, and controls the adult Mirelurks with his sounds. The potential Kings also fight each other for the right to be "paired" with a queen, and those that lose, remain in groups of each other, and are what's called Lakelurks. I think it makes sense and connects the two species.
