While exploring Boston Common, an abandoned central public park in downtown Boston, you’ll likely encounter Super Mutants, Feral Ghouls and Raiders, some of which when critically injured will retreat, but not before telling you they don’t have to kill you, they’ll let Swan do it instead…Looking around you notice something at the centre of the park, a pond, the swan pond, original this pond was far larger before it was downsized several times to the size of a glorified puddle that’s so unimpressive that tourists would actually cry upon seeing it, and those that stuck around afterwards to ride the swan boats frequently crashed into each other because there simply wasn’t enough room to move. Around the edges of The Common and leaking into the streets beyond are warning signs - stay back, keep out, danger, swan, but who or what is swan?

I don't think Swan yelling his name is a psych-up. If you search his old shack you can find a note that just reads "YOU ARE SWANN.", suggesting he was losing his identity as his mind deteriorated. He's yelling his name in a desperate attempt to cling to what little of the man he used to be remains, either still somewhat lucid and doing it consciously or completely lost and merely doing it out of muscle memory like a Romero zombie.

I honestly wonder if it's also him holding on to the remnants of "how you introduce yourself". Maybe he remembers you tell new people your name, but can't remember why or how to even do so, and that's combined into his defensive mechanism. Like a simultaneous ploy to stay away from people that might hurt him, but also that he needed help and physically couldn't ask for it. Very I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. Scary.

I just noticed. This is like the short story “Flowers for Algernon” It was about a stupid guy who was tested on, became REALLY smart via the same injection a rat (Algernon) had, played chess (I think with him), then Algernon went feral and died, and the narrator who was becoming stupid again wrote about him knowing he was going to die to. But less, the point is becoming smart and more “Hey, let’s see what this FEV strain does!” Really the whole original person to Mega smart to mega stupid to dead is similar

They didn't ask to be made into such a creature. Arguably the pain of their never ending growth and the seizures makes them too loony and disconnected from their former humanity to even understand there is anything other than survival. They are one and all ticking time bombs of pain and rage. Unless you can administer a counter serum for their particular strain of FEV it is definitely a mercy to just end their life. Their pain ends and they cannot debase themselves or harm others anymore.

Swann is one of the best, yet saddest enemies I've ever seen. His story can be easily missed, due to the fact that most players just loot him and leave. Its an incredibly amazing encounter, it gives you many reasons not to side with The Institute. It also shows that super mutant behemoths are not inherently aggressive, yet are simply destroyed mentally through the pain and suffering they had to endure, and simply attack out of fear, not wanting to endure more pain. In all my playthroughs of fallout four, I've always left Swann alone. It would be great if fallout four elaborated on Swann, and maybe in some way ease the pain for him, or hell maybe even give him the material that reverted Virgil, but on a larger scale. Swann is one of the most underused characters I've ever seen in a game, and has so much more potential.

@@VaciliNikoMavichWait what ? I could have sworn a New Vegas fanboy explained to me that New Vegas was a masterpiece because you could force people to Minecraft themselves with a skill check, and it's also possible in FO4 ? I’ve a bit of lore I’m stuck on. There’s a decal on the side of the warhead in Megaton in FO3 and it looks something between a Vault-Tec logo and an air force logo. I found the decal but not any documentation. I’m guessing it’s a collaboration between the two (leading to a vault on the moon?) but I just have guesses. This has nibbled at my mind for years.

I want the next fallout game to be a cloning vault and every time you die you get a new clone where everyone you see recognizes you, but you lose everything you have on you, but you can go loot your own body, and maybe an arc where people start to catch on if you die enough

I try to keep Swan alive as long as possible. It is particularly difficult on survival mode because vertibird transport uses his home as a landing zone for many destinations. But I hate having to deal with the frequently spawning raider units that you have to deal with ever after his death.

There is supposed to be a pair of BOOTs in a safe, in one of the buildings of downtown Boston. The boots let you fall from any height without damage. Haven't found them yet.

Yup the diffrent between the behemoths in this game is that they are a result of uncontrolled growth when mutations occur with the serum Radiation during transformation is a great way to force this to happen

I was a pretty low level when I first wandered through here. The place was a bit too quiet, and the bundle of refuse in the pond seemed suspicious, so I was on my guard. As I was looting in that little gazebo at the water's edge, Big Bird's bigger badder brother burst forth from the placid pond, and promptly proceeded to practically pulverize me. Not being a huge fan of dying, I dipped around the gazebo, along the edge of the park, and around the corner, taking shelter in the back of the APC that has 'Swan' scrawled on the side. My faithful companion Dogmeat bravely stood guard outside, but ultimately succumbed to the beast. After contemplating my life choices, and whether or not swan tastes like chicken, I pulled out the best weapon I had: a double-barrel sawed-off shotgun. I spent the next eternity popping out and taking potshots at the ten ton turkey and then scooting back into safety before he could smash me to smithereens. The whines of my fallen companion were drowned out only by the monster's roars of impotent rage and the blasts of buckshot. *Hang on, buddy. I'm coming!* After spraying enough lead to sterilize half of Boston, and consuming enough Stimpaks to cure AIDS, the terrible creature finally fell with a thunderous crash. Victory was mine! And to the victor goes the spoils. The Furious Powerfist has since been renamed 'MR. FISTER', and it's been my primary melee weapon ever since. ✊🏻

If you stick to the main story this is also one of the early and better examples of why the institute needs to go. The end does not justify the means, kidnapping babies, replacing people as an experiment, siphoning power from the surface and even infecting their own because they nicked a few cigarettes. I did not care enough to go looking through the area until recently when i pieced together who and what Swan actually was. Either he deserves to be alone or put out of his misery
