Another great Sherlock Holmes series that was on British television is the one with Jeremy Brett. He was also fantastic in the part. There were two people who played Watson. The first was David Burke (who was excellent) and the second was Edward Hardwicke (also very good). To me, the Sherlock you’re watching is my second favorite Holmes rendition behind the series mentioned above, which is the best version so far imo.

This show is literally an example of someone becoming famous overnight. It aired in July 2010 in the uk & the next day everyone here knew who Cumberbatch was and it got huge ratings. He went from just known by a small few to a huge national figure overnight. It was pretty crazy how the show blew up. Moffat & Gatiss creating this show & writing it together was a great team.

I was in the UK at that time for a short vacation. I arrived, the airline missplaced my luggage, I couldn't buy a hairbrush and had only the clothes on my back. I arrived at the hotel and was frustrated as hell. I flopped on my bed and skipped through the channels until I landed on that show. I watched it (it was the last episode of season 1, but I didn't know that). Anyway, the cliffhanger blew my mind and I foolishly thought, well I'm still here next week, so I can watch how they solve it. Little die I know that I would have to wait two years for the resolution. My luggage arrived 24 hours later, so I was good.

The bit with "Rache - German for 'revenge'" is actually a really clever reference to the original story, "A Study in Scarlet"; in that one, the police think it's supposed to be "Rachel" right away, but Sherlock figures that it's the German word. The show is full of easter eggs and references like that

It's thanks to Doctor Who we got this show. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss (Mycroft Holmes) both writing for Doctor Who and going regulary together on a train from London to Cardiff, they often talked about their love of Doctor Who but also Sherlock, wondering what it would be for a modern day Sherlock. Back home, Steven talked to his wife about it, and she said:" Well, instead of talking about it, why don't you both make the show, I'll produce it, but only if you get that creepy guy from Atonement to play Sherlock" and that's why you see produced by Sue Virtue on every episode. And seeing Rekkai's reaction I know this show was written for you.

I remember watching this when it first aired (I'm in the UK, so it was the very first airing). I was so blown away. The scene in the underground car park was brilliant on so many levels. The more you watch it the more you see how good Mark Gatiss was as Mycroft and Martin Freeman was perfect as Dr Watson. Fun fact, you were definitely supposed to think it was Moriarty. If you look at the credits for this episode, Mark Gatiss is not mentioned. Gatiss and Moffet wanted to keep everyone in the dark about who he was playing.

Mark Gatiss & Stephen Moffat co-created this ( watch their Dracula ) almost all the reference are taken from the original books with just reworks to the 21st century. Study in pink being study in Scarlet in the books. The phone dissection scene is iconic to Sherlock Holmes, it was a pocket watch in the books.

Another fun easter-egg: Watson with the leg-injury that turned out to be psychosomatic as his real injury was in his shoulder --- in the books, Arthur Conan Doyle was a bit lax on continuity and in one story described Watson as having been shot in the leg, and in another stated that his wound was in his shoulder. This show was Moffat being playful with that ambiguity.

Jack the Ripper isn't in the original Conan Doyle stories (although a popular subject in pastiches by modern writers, as in the movies, _A Study in Terror_ and _Murder by Decree_ and the pastiche novels _Dust and Shadow, The Whitechapel Horrors,_ etc.), but it was in that period (and all the way up to 1915). Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss (whom you've seen on _Doctor Who_ and who has also written for _Doctor Who)_ are the co-creators and -showrunners for _Sherlock._ They used to talk about the way to do a new version of Sherlock Holmes while riding the train to Cardiff for _Doctor Who_ and finally decided to do it. They use things from most previous versions of Sherlock Holmes, as well as the Canon (the stories by Conan Doyle). I may mention more specifically as it comes up. The "pajama suicides" are a series of murders that take place in the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce movie, _The Spider Woman._ They had Sherlock text a lot in this because Holmes was wont to send telegrams in the stories. John is back from the war in Afghanistan. Watson in _A Study in Scarlet_ also has returned from the war in Afghanistan. The police think "Rache" means Rachel in the book, and Holmes realizes it is Sherlock. When I saw the ads for this coming to PBS, I didn't think it looked that great (but, of course, as a Sherlockian, I was bound to watch it) -- particularly didn't see the need to change "The game is afoot," a phrase from Shakespeare that could reasonably be used in modern day. I don't like his rather sexist (and slut shaming) takedown of Sally. You will have seen this actress (Vinette Robinson) in the episode of _Doctor Who_ where Martha and the Doctor are on a spaceship hurtling towards the sun ("42"). Holmes in _The Sign of Four_ makes deductions (technically inductions, but we are going to use the traditional Doylean term, of course) from Watson's watch rather than his cell phone (obviously).

What a pleasant surprise this popping up. Sweet! You two doing this show, fantastic, can't wait for this ride. Here's a sad fun fact: In the original writing, Doyle first wrote (1887) that Watson came home from his army tour of Afghanistan. In this modern retelling, more than a hundred years later, he sadly was 'still' returning from the very real tour of Afghanistan. I did admittedly go into this cynically kicking and screaming, so bored and nothing to watch, but by the time Holmes comes back to his flat and asks Holmes if he wants to see more action, I was pleasantly sold! Such good writing and pacing! P.S. You should really try Gosford Park. It was the 'sorta' precursor to Downton Abbey; same writer, he had collected so much unused research material for GP, that he had enough left over to pitch a season of DA.

The first thing that occurred to me when I started watching this show was how similar Holmes was to The Doctor. There is the obvious connection of course with Moffat and Gatiss behind it, as well as fact the actor playing the cabbie was Luciius Petrus Dextrous (translates Lucius the stone handed) in The Fires of Pompeii. All that aside though, it would be very easy to believe Holmes is a Time Lord, based purely on his mannerisms, like a less malignant version of The Master. My apologies if this has already been mention, but as the US medical show House was intended as a procedural detective show set in a hospital, they felt it fitting that House lives at 221B. Not sure what the name of his street was. And if the mysterious man who offered money to Watson to spy on Sherlock seemed familiar, you last saw him turning into a big scorpion thing in the Doctor Who episode The Lazarus Experiment.

Great show, Sherlock is the MI6's equivalent of James Bond in this series, each season is three episodes long with a stand alone "Christmas" movie that bridges season 3 and 4, together, however each episode is an hour and a half long like a mini movie , love this series

Had to stumble into this through Playlists on Syntell's KZbin... This really should be more popular, between your audience and Sherlocks.

This episode, A Study in Pink, is a modern version of the Conan Doyle story A Study in Scarlet. The first series of Sherlock remains faithful to the original Holmes stories, but later series switch to original stories. Another great British show worth reacting to is the BBC America series from a few years ago, Killing Eve, with Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer.

The thing with "OMG that's Moriarty! It's totally Moriarty! Oh, wait, no, it's Mycroft WTF??" thing was absolutely a set-up, meant to trap the Sherlock Holmes fans who came into the series already knowing a lot of the Sherlock lore to jump to a mistaken conclusion. If you've been living under a rock and don't know anything about the Holmes canon, you'll have no idea at all who that mysterious dude with the umbrella is, although you'd probably suspect it was some kind of villain. But if you know your Sherlock stuff, you'd never guess it was Mycroft. Doyle described Mycroft Holmes as a *huge* man. Not JUST fat, but tall and strong, muscular, powerful, but also with like a 70% body fat level or something like that. Mycroft is canonically enormous, and every Holmes fan knows that. So having Mycroft played by someone who's average height and slender is a deliberate fakeout, absolutely meant to lead all the fans who think their knowledge of Holmes canon will let them stay three steps ahead to make that wrong assumption and then be all, "Wait, what?!?!" when the reveal happened at the end. It's a tease, and it was fun. :)

Maria Konnikova, a psychologist and the author of How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes, has an article called "Stop Calling Sherlock Holmes a Sociopath! Thanks, a Psychologist." It is more about the book character, but I'm not sure this version qualifies either. I always kind of took this as a snarky comeback more than a diagnostic fact. Perhaps as we go along, we'll see what you think. Moffat has said, "He's not a psychopath, he's not a sociopath . . . he's a man who chooses to be the way he is because he thinks it makes him better. It's a monastic decision. He takes himself out of touch with his sexuality, out of touch with his emotions in order to make himself better."

Just a heads-up, Steven Moffat isn't the only connection to Doctor Who: Mark Gatiss, the actor who plays Mycroft, was also a writer (and sometimes actor) on Doctor Who.

I love that you guys are reacting to this!! Mark Gatiss, who plays Mycroft, is a co-creator of this series, as well as a writer. You might recognize him from the Doctor Who episode The Lazarus Experiment (which he wrote) and one of the Nazis in Good Omens.
