When the judge asked if he was trying to save his brother or not it was so heartbreaking i cried. Everyone thinks he's a murderer but only he knows that he isn't but can't express himself. Deep down he knows he couldn't save his brother but still can't express the sadness or guilt. Such a good scene.

She didn't quit because she was attacked. She quit because she feels she is 'not an attorney who is helpful to her' client. She sees the reality of what is sometimes a cruel and biased world. Also, if you try to put yourself into the brother's shoes, you can get a glimpse into why he would grow to resent his autistic brother. While he feels the pressure to always achieve excellence, his autistic brother has near to zero expectations - at least in his eyes. Also, if you can't grasp emotions, how can you be expected to display empathy. Woo Young Woo has come a long way from her 5 year old self. Been loving your reactions.

Actually, the trope that autistic people don't feel empathy is one of the reasons I wrote off the possibility of being autistic for a long time, because I'm very sensitive to other people's emotions. But it turned out I *am* autistic 🤷🏼‍♀ I think it's important to consider that just because autistic people don't react the way allistic people do in these situations, that doesn't mean we don't feel empathy. There's actually a great line in the first season of Bones, where Angela says to Brennan, "Do you think that maybe you come across as cold because you feel things too deeply?" And that's basically the paradox.

As someone who is Autistic, I love this show! But that bit with Young Woo and her father, Its hard to explain to someone who has not been through it but its not a lack of empathy but rather being unable to understand Emotions in others, you can understand emotions but still have zero comprehension. I was well into my teens before i could learn to spot the ques in other people but Im lucky to be on the higher end of the spectrum.

I'm not diagnosed, but I do understand what happened in her mind because I personally have that kind of moments in my life too. Long story short, my mother once cried in front of me on the floor, because of too much desperation and disappointments. I know her heart is shattering and she's in a great agony, but the understanding never reached my heart - not because I don't love her, nor I don't understand her emotions. At the moment I felt like there was a thick, untrespassable wall between my brain and my heart.

I don't have any right to say what is true or untrue, but at least from what I can gather and as a psych major, it does seem like ppl who are on the autistic spectrum have a more difficult time picking up "normal" social cues. I think that seems to be a reoccurring factor shown by the drama such as when Young-woo leaves the room as soon as shes done listening.

A lot of people on the spectrum have Alexithymia, and those that do will have difficulties identifying emotions not only in other people, but also identifying our own emotions. The way I see it is the wiring or process of experiencing emotions is quite different to others. For non autistics, specifically people who don’t have Alexithymia, you don’t need to think to identify emotions. For me, I need to look for external signs to be able to recognize emotions. E.g. if I feel dizzy or my stomach growls, I know I’m hungry. I don’t feel hunger and can struggle to identify when I’m hungry or full. I don’t know when I’m feeling too hot or when I’m happy. People around me will tell me, you are happy because you are laughing. So going forward, when I notice I’m laughing, I know that means I’m happy. Regarding empathy, there are two different types of empathy and autistics can struggle with one type over the other. Also, there is an argument regarding double empathy, which helps explain our display of emotions. We also experience emotions like others, but we may not show the emotions the same way, and because neuotypicals do not understand our language - our display of emotions can be interpreted differently and cause a lot of misunderstandings. If you are unable to understand / read each other’s language - body language and display of emotions, you will not be able to communicate efficiently. Don’t forget autism is a different neurotype so your brain is wired differently to neurotypicals, effecting the way you communicate, experience emotions, process information etc.

That was wy I started watching kdramas about 2 years ago. Everything on western TV felt old hat anymore, so the different tropes, cultural cues, expectations, and story pacing felt so fresh on korean shows. Still does, really. U shouldn't be too surprised though. This drama is actually very easy to follow compared to kdramas like for example 환혼 /Alchemy of Souls (too many korean sorcery terms that's difficult for foreigners to keep up). Things like emphatizing with or discriminating against autism or people with disability is very universal imo.

The Syntell Achara combo is working for me. There's some really important and nuanced discussions taking place here, and I love it. I have a brother with Autism and I fully appreciate how this show is handling the depiction of it. It is extremely difficult, especially if you don't have the ability to support them mentally, emotionally, physically and financially. But then there are those days when you can see the pure joy they have in the things they love and you envy their blissful unawareness of the world they are in... in some senses they are the lucky ones.

19:40 this part really made me angry when I watched it. ASD is called a "spectrum" for a reason, it's even in the name of the disorder - Autism Spectrum Disorder. Just because somebody as high-functioning as her can navigate life well doesn't mean that somebody like the defendant can also do so. The prosecution's argument was disingenuous, and it annoyed me that they didn't allow the medical professional that was on the stand to make a proper comeback. He was supposed to be an expert in ASD, but he didn't immediately point out the logical inaccuracy of the prosecution's line of questioning?
@kiwisvideos0
@kiwisvideos0 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, i also was sad that the expert couldn't explain this, but I guess it's cause it's shown that the judge also was discriminatory towards Youngwoo (her ruling that the prosecution's question were not discriminatory and therefore were valid). I guess the point of it was to show how much disinformation about ASD there is.

Pengsoo is the name of the penguin character. To my knowledge, there's no actual korean name for penguin but i could be wrong. This is the korean word: 펭귄. Its the same word but just spelled with the Korean alphabet. I believe Pengsoo is children's TV/broadcast character kinda like how we have characters like Big Bird from Sesame Street. The character is very popularity. Its the main character of the KZbin Channel: Giant Peng TV which is run by EBS (Educational Broadcasting System). EBS is, I want to say, Korea's version of PBS.

actually what the other prosecution did in arguing that decreasing the sentence because the defendant is on the spectrum is wrong because then one would have to follow that Woo Young Woo is incompetent is completely wrong. In saying what he did he showed that everyone including himself that all autistic people are the same when it comes to their skills an abilities. However, it is clearly called a SPECTRUM for a reason. Different people have different groups of autistic traits and no ones autism is the same. It does not follow that because one person on the autism spectrum has decreased agency in specific realms of life that all other autistic people have those same challenges. Therefore, it is not a flawed argument in the slightest to say that because of the son's autism, his specific challenges and abilities, he has decreased agency in knowing what he was doing. The prosecution was wrong and so was the defense to fold. This example is one of the misconceptions of autistic people and clearly how little research either side as well as the general public has about the autism spectrum. This is really fucking frustrating to me as a autistic person.

Honestly, I really have to give absolute props to the director and script writer for providing an unbiased perspective of Hans Asperger. Not many realize that the same man who understood the potential inherent in people with disabilities and shed light on this in the field of psychology and child development is also the same person who abetted the killing of thousands of such people. He is often, unfortunately, lauded for such studies but the darker parts of his story are rarely mentioned. It's sad to see that such brilliant people throughout history are often also the most flawed and blind to the choices they make. As a therapist myself, I have to admit that I was reluctant to watch this show because of my experience watching other dramas depicting every stereotype of people with disabilities but not the whole picture and the reality of who they are. But this drama has my respect for the amount of research and effort they put into Woo Young Woo's character and in the people around her. There are many different types of reactions and personal developments happening in each person portrayed here and I'm glad for it!!!

21:25 that's a humpback whale! It is somewhat important to know a bit about whale species in this drama :D Because they symbolize different things and how pivotal the idea Woo brought up is to the case.

i think you are one of my favorite interviewer's for this show! there's a lot of positive insights with all the episodes so far and watching all your expressions makes me laugh, cry, and understand whats happening. you both do such a great job together and it shows how you are so into each moment of the scenes. i never thought i'd be watching kdrama but the plots to each episodes is really life meaningful great props to all the writer, director, etc....the actors are so awesome!!! great chemistry to the leading actor and actress which makes this show so exciting to watch and AttorneyWoo building this trust with JunHo, whoa-whoa! so good!!

7:45 studies have shown that autistic people can actually be more empathetic than nonautistics, however it can appear that they arent because they have a hard time reading emotions, or may not have the social skills to know what to do with someone else emotions. so in the father/daughter scene it might have been that youngwoo didnt understand that her father crying meant that he was sad, and once he explained verbally that he was sad, that she didnt know what the proper response to him being sad would be. so while it appears that she doesnt care about him during that scene, she maybe thinking a lot internally. i know that would cause issues with me and my mom, because she would explain why she was angry/sad/embarressed and i would often just stay silent and listen to her. and from the outside it looked like i didnt care, i was actually thinking a lot about what she had said and was thinking about either how to respond or what i can do to help in the future, i didnt think about what i should have respond to her in that moment, which made her feel ignored. which i know now to respond in the moment, but as a kid i didnt.

Omg ok so this is an interesting difference between English speakers and Korean speakers! So the Korean word for whale is "Gol-lae" and the Korean word for dolphin is "dol-gol-lae" which gives a hint to the scientific fact that all dolphins are actually a type of whale. Most native Korean speakers know that fact sort of as common sense (a like like how most Americans know that dogs are related to wolves) because of the linguistic hint. However, English has two completely different words for dolphin and whale, so most English speakers don't realize theyre part of the same family!
