the second article is just🤯 simple yet so elegant, without fancy ligands and crazy catalysts, pure satisfaction

Finally, a new way to make exotic tetrazole explosives. I am curious though, would azidosulfuric acid work too or is the fluorosulfuric part absolutely necessary? Cause if azidosulfuric works, you just need to dissolve hydrazoic acid in a mix of sulfur trioxide and sulfuric acid to make it.

There are other sulfonyl azides used in diazo transfer reactions, but I’m not sure if they demonstrate competence in tetrazolation reactions

The fluorosulfuryl azide looks super-toxic. Insanely super toxic, in fact.

the authors did some basic tox studies in their SI - "Two human cell lines, the HeLa and the HEK293T were tested with FSO2N3 solution (stock solution of FSO2N3 at 200 mM MTBE/DMSO 1:1, v/v) at different concentration of FSO2N3, and the IC50 values for both cell lines were found to be >400 µM. All cell lines were obtained from American Type Culture Collection (ATCC)." "Acute oral toxicity study of FSO2N3 solutions in mice has been carried out with C57 mice (25 male) with 200 mM FSO2N3 stock solution (in EtOAc/DMSO 1:1, v/v). The mice were divided into 5 groups of 5 mice, and were administered with the FSO2N3 solution dilute with water (FSO2N3 dose at 0, 1, 10, 100, 1000 mg/kg respectively for the five groups) via intragastric route. Deaths were observed in the group with 1000 mg/kg dose, whereas all mice survived in the other four groups. The LD50 of the FSO2N3 was estimated to be 100-1000 mg/kg in this study. No lesion was observed in the kidneys or livers of the mice across all groups. Combined with the cytotoxicity study mentioned in the previous paragraph, it is unlikely that FSO2N3 is a highly toxic substance. The full report for this acute oral toxicity study of FSO2N3 in C57 mice is available upon request."

@@That_Chemist That's surprising. I guess the azide is more stable than it looks. It probably just needs a phosphorus atom swapped in to realize its potential.

Cyanide compounds are probably some of the most well known highly toxic chemicals, particularly hydrogen cyanide. Another chemical I can think of that's extremely toxic is concentrated solutions of hydrofluoric acid eg a 70% hydrofluoric acid solution. Which I think is interesting because although hydrofluoric acid is very corrosive and extremely toxic it's actually considered a weak acid since the bond between hydrogen and fluorine in HF is very strong so it doesn't dissociate much in water and since dissociating completely in water is the definition of a strong acid HF is considered a weak acid despite being very corrosive and extremely toxic

So for the first paper, instead of SO2FN3, would CF2HN3 (azidodifluoromethane) work too theoretically? I mean would it even worth a try?
