The 2008 Boston Celtics had one of the best seasons in NBA history, and they will never let you forget that. The Celtics were led by the big 3 of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett. In their first season together they would win 66 games posting the greatest single season turnaround in NBA history, and would go on to defeat Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. Despite these accomplishments, this team has developed a reputation over the years. A team that views their singular championship as perhaps a greater achievement than it actually is. So why are the 2008 Boston so hated?

His style of coaching worked well in the late 2010s and he had a bunch of vets and role players that bought in to his philosophy. Also Rondo was so good as a rookie. He was the piece that put it all together.

They are the one championship dynasty... With the way that they talk you would have thought they ran the NBA for half a decade lol. The crazy thing is they wouldn't be so hated if their ego wasn't so incredibly out of whack, I recognize how difficult it is to win a championship and that in itself is an accomplishment that should never be forgotten but my God... @@hjkohler2966I say kind of a hot take because I think some people would object to Hannum because of how far back he was. But Auerbach is considered as good as he is either way, so it may not be a hot take. The biggest issue I see is that people tend to go off of total wins and not as much the percentage of them when discussing coaches. Doc fortunately coached longer, but has one championship, and three appearances in the conference finals or later I believe (could’ve been four if KG doesn’t get hurt in 09, but three as is). Hannum and Tomjanovich coached shorter periods, but the former has three championships counting the ABA, and the latter has two championships and a third conference finals appearance in a much shorter career than Rivers.

As a diehard Celtics fan I think the team gets overhyped mainly because it’s been so damn long since we’ve won last. For being a team tied with the most championships it’s really underwhelming to think we’ve only won once since the championship in 86. 08 was definitely an amazing team and with the overall culture in Boston I definitely enjoy the reunions but can see why people get annoyed too. You could argue the number reunions come from them all simply just really liking each other and wanting to see each other more often outside of the win. Though maybe other one off championship teams should take notes and have reunions too. Would be cool to see the older Mavs meet up sometime. Fingers crossed the C’s now can pull us out of another championship drought though, but I wouldn’t be surprised if guys from the past couple iterations of the team these past few seasons try doing reunions as well. Can definitely see Smart coming back to chill in Boston with Tatum and Brown later down the road after retiring for example.

The Celtics of the late 2010’s and early 2020’s should be considered a pretty darn good team that unfortunately hasn’t been at their best in the playoffs. As a Miami native, that's a BS excuse. They say the same thing about us, but the truth is winning made Miami into a basketball city. Something Atlanta hasn't done. Miami is a giant melting pot of a city. Arguably ground zero for immigrants who come here for a fresh start. As such, basketball is not always a predominant sport in many of those citizens' homeland. They come here and learn the culture. When the team is good, and winning, it's easier for them folks to acclimate and become fans. Once they do, they stick around. So Atlanta's problem is not there is too much to do, it's that the team sucks, and nobody cares.

Well guys, I think to me, the reason the Celtics of the Pierce-Garnett-Ray era didn't win another title was because of their age, they was able to beat my Lakers in 08, cause we didn't have Bynum clogging up the middle and a fully healthy Trevor Ariza, Bynum getting hurt allowed us to trade for Pau Gasol, Celtics likely still would've won cause of the 66 wins to our 57 wins, but not having a healthy Bynum and Ariza not being at full health revealed itself in the finals. The Celtics in 08-09, even if KG didn't get hurt, they weren't gone to repeat, my Lakers getting Bynum back healthy and Ariza back at full health, and Bynum and Gasol teaming up for the first time, that 09 Laker team was determined to get back to the finals and this time come back winning it all, they were ready to rebound from the previous year's loss, nothing was gone stop them, not the Celtics if Garnett didn't get hurt, we would've denied their repeat attempt, but injuries are a part of sports. In 2010 finals, Lakers dominated the Celtics on the offensive boards, and that included the Celtics having Perkins, but the Celtics in game 7, seem like they didn't miss Perk at all, they was up 13 in the third, Lakers cut it to 4 after 3 quarters, then Fisher hit a three, Kobe hit a jumper, it was back and forth, KG scored, Rasheed hit a three, Rondo hit a three to keep Boston close, but Metta hit the 3, Pau made the baseline pumpfake on 3 Celtics, Kobe had shooting struggles, but he did good in other areas, kept grabbing rebounds and getting to the line and hitting them, then Sasha hit key free throws to seal it, Rondo tried for the jumper and missed, Pau rebounds to Odom to Kobe all the way down to the court and Kobe puts up his index finger in celebration, Lakers came from 3-2 down to repeat as champions by beating the Celtics, and it's the first time the Celtics blew a 3-2 lead in the Finals, how fitting by their rivals after all the battles. And guys, it was Doc's championship in 08, Thibs helped no doubt, even Tony Allen always said he will listen to Thibs, but Doc is a good motivator and defense coach, he had his share of blown 3-2 leads and 3-1 leads as coach, trying to improve the defense now with the Bucks. Thibs himself after 3 head coaching stops, is still searching for his first nba title on his own, and first finals appearance. He so far has been to one Conference Finals as coach in 2011, won game 1 vs Heat big 3 first season together, before dropping 4 straight. Got a good Knicks squad, though dealing with injuries. Many of his players have always said he's worked him hard in practice, always his approach and reputation, which is nothing wrong with. I do have to say, you guys do sound like teenagers when yall talk.

It's easy how at least one of the trades happened. Kevin McHale was with the T-Wolves at the time. He may have worked for the T-Wolves, but he will always bleed Celtics green. That's how KG landed with the Celtics. And I was for it because like any great player, KG deserved a chance to compete for an NBA title with an excellent core of teammates. KG was in basketball purgatory late in his career with the T-Wolves.

I'm a Celtics fan and when I think about our history I just think about the whole 17 banners not just the 2008 one. I don't fixate on this one championship and no one on the Celtics sub on reddit does either. The only reason it gets talked about a lot more than it should be is because a) 3 of the guys on that team was a top 10 player at their position in that time and it was the only ring they ever won and b) 3 of the guys on that team went on to become broadcasters where they got to talk about it so often. You don't hear Dirk or Chauncey Billups talking the livelong day about their one ring because they're "humble", they don't talk about it because they don't have the soapbox to circle back to it every two to three business days.

Pierce called himself the best player in the world after winning in 2008. KG and Pierce still flaunting that title to this day isn’t surprising. Garnett was the anti Tim Duncan. He thought being loud would scare opponents but it only got him 1 ring that he had to team up with other superstars to get. He really overvalued himself. Same with Pierce. I don't hate or even dislike the Celtics as a franchise, but I don't like this '08 team. Not only are they incredibly full of themselves to a frankly insane degree (not saying they weren't a good -- they absolutely were) and all of the main guys act conceited as hell about this one ring except for Ray Allen, but to me they kind of started the modern trend version of building a superteam around a big three by having established stars all agree to come together because they couldn't win a ring anywhere else. Not all superteams are bad, but I hate the ones that feel completely manufactured and not organic and this Boston team was a precursor to what was to come with the Heatles, KD in Golden State (though they proved they were great without him too), some of the Lakers teams, and many failed or currently ongoing attempts at the same like Brooklyn before this year, current Phoenix, et al. Also them carrying Kendrick Perkins to a chip means we now have to listen to his attempts at analysis on sports broadcasts and their title gave false legitimacy to Doc Rivers and led to him getting future HC jobs... two nearly unforgivable things tbh. 😂

Here we have LeBron eliminating Chicago to make the finals on top showing little to no emotion as he advanced to the NBA Finals for the 2nd time in his career and first time in 4 years , at the bottom left and right we have LeBron showing tons of emotions as he eliminates Boston in the 2nd Round of the same 2011 playoffs run , what’s more meaningful winning the Eastern Conference Championship to make the grand stage or winning the Semifinals ? We all know the answer to that so is very silly for me to even ask this question right ? Those emotions LeBron had were the emotions of when u finally beat that bully that use to beat u up all the time and u finally got him This meant more to LeBron than beating Chicago because that was a mental battle we all know LeBron quit against Boston in the 2010 Semifinals something many people forget as his 2011 lackluster finals put such a huge cloud over him that people forget the previous year he quit on those Cavs against Boston Y’all can spin the narrative a million times but that’s the truth just like is true that after that LeBron busted our asses for the next decade as he finally got help and became a man amongst boys Paul Pierce and the Celtics were to LeBron what Isiah Thomas and the Bad Boys pistons were to Michael Jordan in the mid to late 1980’s , they both became the goats of their respective generations but before they did that both Detroit and Boston use to whoop them the difference is Jordan never left to join multiple stars or hall Of Famers that being said LeBron needed help that man took Boston in 2008 to 7 games by himself that’s when I knew he was going to run the league in the future which he did to his credit Every goat has is bumps along the road before becoming a goat 🐐 LeBron is the greatest player I have ever seen and I’m at peace with that with Kobe a close 2nd behind

Can you guys do another one of 2001 lakers. People talk about that team like they had Kobe from 2006 to 2012. It’s funny to actually show film and stats of Kobe in 2001. It’s fun watching their world implode cause they realize this is really pre-mamba Kobe. It’s why I laugh when someone tells me they are the best team. If you had actual prime Kobe then sure you’ve got an argument. Instead you got Kobe who is still maturing and the struggle was real when you got deeper into the playoffs. Their’s a reason why Kobe being questioned if he could win without Shaw was a legit question going into the 2004-2005 season.

I think the special thing about them is that they were the only Big Three that I can think of in recent memory where all three guys had been star players who kept falling short of a title, but getting together finally got them one. It’s how you think these things ideally SHOULD play out. When superteams are made up of one or more guys that have already won, it feels obnoxious, like stacking the deck so the rich get richer. But the fact that all three were in the latter half of their careers and had all failed to get there until they joined together makes it kind of cool to me. In that way, it’s also better that they didn’t win a bunch of times. So, they may not be a dynasty or whatnot, but there is something special about them.
