I think a lot of people, me included, saw the extensive wavetable capabilities Serum has (drawing your own, importing pictures and all that crazy shit) as a bit of a gimmick for Dubstep nerds when Serum launch.. With time I've come to realize how useful it can be if using this technique to get this blend of acoustic and digital as you say. The noise osc is also dope, I wish Duda called it "noise osc/sampler" because I use it as that more than anything. If it had like a zoom in mode with some extra sampling functionality, that would be dope as well. My favorite thing to do is to load up one of the built in kick drum samples and key track it (you have to tune it yourself with pitch, there's a fine tune in the global section as well). It sounds really cool as a layer on a deep house pluck bass. Great tutorial as always. Unlike all the other KZbin producers you have really useful sounds, and a well thought out idea/concept youre excited to share with us in every video.

Why do you have to do that in Serum? You can use the sampler in your daw and achieve much better results. Using drum samples as an attack layer for plucks and string type instruments is an old and powerful trick.
@envispojke
@envispojke 6 жыл бұрын
Danko you're not using the kick as an attack sample, you're keytracking it (looping it and making it change pitch when you play different notes) and therefore it's more like it's becoming a waveform. Of course you can do that with a sampler as well but it's much easier in Serum and it's useful as a layer

This was excellent. Other ppl doing this are quite happy to have us sitting here while they try random sounds they have not been tested. For folks that keep getting a distorted sound after following the steps, try this: enter the pitch into the oscillator formula window BEFORE you drag your wave file in (F1 for example). If it's still distorted, try entering different octaves for the same pitch, usually lower. I had a long cello sample at F1 that was coming in distorted, typed in F1 in the formula first, and it was a bit better. Typed in F0, and it was goddamn perfect.

I’ve used this technique similarly but using the formula tab inside the wavetable editor, i just write the note and the pitch it is (for the kalimba it would be C3) then i drag the sample to the wavetable and load it in, then i spectral morph it to tie the samples together and use it as a resample essentially. Really great stuff!

I tried dragging in my own audio sample I cut from another synth loop (its one note) and tried doing the exact same process (even cutting the wave form at the beginning a hair so there isn't any silence whatsoever) and its showing me almost a flat line in the oscillator and when I try to play it, it only gives me the original 'init preset' sound but at a drastically lower volume. Is there something Im doing wrong? Much help appreciated :-)

bump on this comment, i'm having the same exact issue and I cant figure out the problem. If someone could give some advice it would be greatly appreciated
@St0ckwell
@St0ckwell 5 жыл бұрын
I had this problem at first too. If you haven't figured it out yet, any sample will do this. What that is is your sample being locked into a wavetable position. If you do the LFO step, then it will play back all positions of the wavetable, thereby giving you normal sample playback. However, as serum is a synth and not a sampler, if you sustain the note beyond the length of your sample, you will just get this quiet sound at the tail end. I pulled in some sounds from Arturia's CMI V and I cannot believe the results. I think from now on I'll do all of my sounds in this way.
