I’m still not adding it to my shopping cart for the foreseeable future but I’m not ruling it out either. You make a more compelling case for it than Behringer has.

thanks. Obviously, I'm not trying to sell this module (nothing in it for me, right?). I owned another frequency shifter a year or two ago. I sold it because I didn't have any idea how to use it beyond clang tones, which I could do with a Ring Modulator. Having separate outputs for the sum and difference opens a lot of possibiilities. One of my favorite use cases (applications) is stereo imaging. as basic as it is, it really enhances the basic subtractive synthesis sound.

Great video! I’m learning so much from watching your content for the system 55. I bought one a few months ago and have learned a lot from your tutorials and explanations. I have my Bode on order and it’ll get here in June! Until then, I’ll keep watching. Cheers!

Researching and producing this video was a process of discovery for me as well! I actually owned a frequency shifter a couple of years ago and sold it because I didn't really understand it. Finding the datasheet was a revelation for me.

another great video OZ. fantastic job on demonstrating your signal flow. makes it easy to follow.The Bode is a wonderful unit. Now I want one. I am most familiar with the clang tone function of the Bode. but the others are an incredible bonus! Just wondering, in your last example , is there a difference between using the sine wave out of 2600 osc 2 rather than the filter self oscillation? Cheers
@ozhalljr
@ozhalljr 10 ай бұрын
Thanks Tony! Another great question. Any 4 pole filter in self oscillation will produce a pure sine wave. It's pretty easy to hear the difference vs any "sine" wave created by "waveshaping" an oscillator. The difference is subtle, but it is there. These low level upper harmonics can become more prominent when the sine wave is used for FM. For the FM example, I wanted to simplify the FM sound as much as possible (i.e. avoid the effect of higher harmonics that would have appeared using a VCO). Again the difference is subtle.

ok, great explaination. I have noticed that the filter oscillation seemed more intense. Whether this is a gain thing on not I am not sure. When you mention it, it does seem to have a different tonal characteristic. The drum examples are really cool here. I love what the 1630 does for the 808 sounds. very neat. Thanks foor the quick reply. Looking forwrd to part 3. Your wonderful labor of love!! BTW, I studied on a 2600 just like yours back in the 70's in music school. It was a terrific instrument to learn on. It gave me a good poundation. Nice to see it is so relevant now. Cheers@@ozhalljr

@@moogfooger I had to check this one on the scope! The output level of the filter (+/- 5v) is the same output of VCO 2 sine output. Also, when you A/B the two outputs, you can clearly hear the presence of some overtones in the waveshaped output. I had a good friend who owned a studio with an ARP 2600 back in the late 70s. He loaned it to me for an extended period ( 2 years? ). I'm guessing I logged hundreds of hours on the thing. Those college days playing with and programming synthesizers probably did more to prepare me for an IT career than anything else I studied :)

Question: Application #2, Stereo Imaging Not being familiar with the ARP 2600, nor its mixer section,... Is the dry signal still present in mono getting mixed with the two Bode shifted outputs?
@ozhalljr
@ozhalljr 4 ай бұрын
No, the dry signal is not present. This operates similar to a Ring Modulator, where the original signals are missing from the output.

Have you tried patching a feedback loop around the chorus patch to achieve a kind of phaser-like sound? If you do, share the results! If it works like it does in my DAW, it's pretty cool!
@ozhalljr

@@ozhalljr No, thank you! I have my doubts if it will work how I think it should, and no way to test it for a few months, so I would really appreciate it.. My doubt comes from reports of concerningly low headroom in the module, and having never actually seen this frequency-shifter-phaser sound done in analog before. Only digitally with little or no delay in the feedback path.

For me personally, the introduction to the individual patches is almost too detailed, but the videos are nevertheless a very good introduction to this module, which can be used wonderfully for percussive sounds, among other things. Looking forward to part 3 of the series.
