@@weedwacker1716 I don't really like Adam Savage though I did enjoy Myth busters back in the day and I can't stand Star wars... But that still made me really happy to hear about for some reason. Rich people spending money on stupid shit and who more or less unknowingly pisses of a whole group of people while doing so is just the best :D Seeing an antique car with a really dumb new paint job and too many speakers in it, an old building renovated to what a 16 year old youtuber with too much money thinks is cool, stuff like that just makes me smile. It's on the same level as that old lady who wanted to fix the jesus painting.

Stuart Burton The bright blue, right? It is an old world process known as nitre bluing. Basically the temperature that the parts get the beautiful blue is the same temperature needed to spring-temper the parts. Instead of tempering then bluing, they did both with one step. The results are gorgeous

Man,,, whoever that collector is that Ian visits for these rare pistols must have one of the best private collections in the world! Its astonishing how many rare pistols he presents from that same location with the fire place in the background. I take it the person is an old school collector because Ian never shoots any of them. I'm a "won't buy it if I can't shoot it" sort of small scale pattern collector, so looking at what that guy has is amazing.

A C96 Mauser was the very first handgun I ever owned and it even had the shoulder stock. It sure wasn't one of the early ones, though. That was over 50 years ago. Although the shoulder stock is, in theory, a good idea, the reality is, if the fit is loose and it wobbles (mean where the holster/stock attaches to the pistol), it isn't as good as it could be.

My C96-M30 also (correctly) does NOT have a serial number on the stock tang...and (also proper for a M30) the rear door release button is engraved with a series of different diameter rings instead of a checkered pattern. Hint to spot fakes.....the release button for a true Mauser that uses a checkered release button, has the checkering done vertical/horizontal grooves. The Chinese and maybe even Spanish copies have checkering that is X pattern...not vertical or horizontal but cut at a 45 degree angle.

Would this example be one that Winston Churchill used at the Battle of Omdurman? Churchill traded his sabre for a Mauser pistol prior to the battle and subsequently found himself in the midst of a pack of Dervishes after his cavalry troop charged the enemy line. He credited the pistol with aiding in his escape from the melee where a sword would have not been as effective.

@@jeffreywacker3598, He's British and still alive. He was on the show Pawn Stars a few weeks ago explaining what he did to create the blaster. They also had the original blaster on the show and told Rick (the lawn shop owner) that he could buy it for $1,000,000. Of course he didn't buy it.

Thanks Ian that's fascinating. Do you know if these early System Mauser pistols were the type that Mrs Churchill purchased from Rigby & Co for her son Winston?

I wonder if the lightening of the later models was done merely for user comfort or if it was too help the reliability of the pistol also.
