The best part about that blast beat section is that it fits thematically with the song. You hear the guitar scrapes (emulating the sound of shells being loaded) before this massive blast beat section (the shells being fired)...it fits perfectly with the theme of the song. It's more than just the fact that he is using blast beats...it's the way they use them that makes it all the more effective.
@ripperplaysclon152 Жыл бұрын
You’ve got it all wrong. The guitar dead notes are more like shotgun fire, the blast beats are machine gun fire.

They've used them before on a few songs, namely X from Toxicity. But in this song they do a straight up black metal-esque section.

I feel like this guitar tone here reminds me totally of Mezmerize and Hypnotize. But the guitar sound is very different on Toxicity and Steal this album, which had a much more distorted Nu Metal sound. This here sounds warmer and more classic. I mean, classic rock sound, not classic SOAD. At least that's what my ears hear. I think he plays different guitars on the albums. I think I read once he started with an Ibanez Iceman and changed to Gibson on later albums. 🤔 You're right, there were some Black Metal blast beats here. But I think Cigaro from Mezmerize already had some Black Metal influences. Daron is a Black Metal fan. I mean he signed Satyricon back in the day when he had his own label. Serj doing Black Metal Screams? I mean I wouldn't be too surprised if he was able to. 🙈
@The_JustJoshing3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he probably could do black metal screams but it seems like he messed up his throat from improper technique over the years.

There is a performance on KZbin, it was 1996,in the song "soil", he made a guttural exhale scream, he sounded just like George fisher... Actually one of the few times serj did an exhale growl

5:23 My exact thoughts. I was terrified to listen at first wondering if their sound had changed. Glad to see they take the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" proverb to heart.

This song was actually written by Daron for Scars on Broadway, as was the other they released. This song is definitely scars tasting but also works really well as a system song. I love both bands (like. a LOT) so I definitely enjoy this.

You should react to the other new SoaD song- "Protect the Land" since I'm pretty sure that these will be the last 2 SoaD songs we get. They only got together because of the Armenian crisis in Artsakh. Now that is over I don't think they'll ever record a new song together.

I remember watching a Jared dines video where he said he didn't like black metal but liked when bands took influence from it. Blackened deathcore for example. I'm in the same boat personally, I gave black metal a fair shot in high school when I was exploring all the branches on the tree and now I mostly stick to metalcore and deathcore with a bit of new metal and ska...
@رزيئة3 жыл бұрын
Same here. I mean, the music itself isn't that bad and I can find some songs and band that I like the sound and tone of. But the problem is the lyrics and the controversy surrounding the bands which is a huge black metal personality trait. Nearly most bands are either nazis or criminals, or both. Only a small fraction are normal people. Can't really listen to a band that wants to genocide people or who kidnaps, tortures, murders and eats people either (a dude named Gahhl did the latter I think).

I cannot be the only person who doesn't here black metal there at all. It's just some fucking tremolo picking over a blast beat. Sure, those are common in black metal, but that does not even slightly make it black metal. I don't get how so many are saying that. It sounds like what a new metalhead would be saying out of ignorance (like growls exclusively meaning death metal), but obviously Mark's not that.
@dualwieldsoftware3 жыл бұрын
I was a bit perplexed at that statement, too. I'm not getting any black metal from it either, even if the techniques in that section are common in black metal.
@PenMarkArt3 жыл бұрын
It’s true other styles use blast beats and tremolo without being black metal; I think what pushes it a little closer to black metal vibes was the progression during the tremolo. The minor harmonies started to switch me into “expecting some higher screams” as Mark pointed out. SoaD is definitely not blackened genre, buuut I was very delighted at the small nod to it.
