Comprehensive Systems Training for our Outremer 52 Catamaran
🌊 Welcome back to our channel, where dive into the training on all of the systems for our Outremer 52 performance catamaran. Join us as we learn first hand about all the necessary (and not so necessary) boat systems we will be using and maintaining on our sailboat.
🔹 Navigation and Electronics: Join us at the navigation station as we learn about all the electronics that will guide us through better decisions as we circumnavigate. From navigation and route planning to instruments, radar and communication systems.
🔹 Electricity and Power: We learned how to best manage power without a generator including use of lithium batteries, solar, and a Watt&Sea hydrogenerator.
🔹 Plumbing: We learned how the plumbing systems works and how to troubleshoot (and prevent) nasty problems.
🔹 Sail Tactics: We learned more about how to manage heavy wind conditions so we can sail with confidence with safety is a top priority.
Reefing Guidelines: (Apparent)
Main: under 20kn full; 20-27 R1; 25-32 R2; over 35 R3
Genoa: under 20kn full; 20-27 1/3
Staysail: under 32 full; 30-37 2/3; 35-45 1/3; 40-50 storm jib
Running: over 50kn

Hello! We are Holly and Stephane 🇺🇸🇫🇷
We have made the transition from full-time software professionals from the SF Bay Area to liveaboard sailing explorers who always keep one eye on the weather and our hearts in a song. Our goal is to complete a circumnavigation and we recently transitioned to a performance catamaran and are madly in love with our Outremer 52. We are working with Outremer in France (with the help of Google translate) to launch our boat project and start our journey as sailing vagabonds. While it’s not a race or speedtest, we are doing our first Bluewater crossing this year and we are excited to see AWEN stretch her legs and dance on the water. Join us as we share what we’re learning living without Amazon, (but with Starlink), and attempt this new life of travel and adventure on the ocean. Please be patient with us as we continue to improve our KZbin vlogging skills. Our goal isn’t to make our life a movie, it’s to give back to what others have shared with us, which is why we don’t monetize our channel.

Most certainly all boats have problems, even new boats, but it sure gives you confidence when you can immediately get help to fix the issues when they arise and not feel stranded in no man’s land. It can be so frustrating when things break or there is user error for stupid stuff and you feel entirely on your own. They have been remarkable!

Outremer are really exceptional at handover. Then I watch them interact with the GLYWO Fleet, and they certainly rise to the challenge. They fly to lots of the longer stops, upgrade the yachts, make repairs, it blows my mind. I can't think of another brand so dedicated. Good choice guys. I'm only mildly jealous. No, actually, I'm totally drooling. (I'm watching Ruby Rose 2 commissioning their Seawind 1360, hull 2, and boy are they having problems.... on their own).

Overload for sure! Wow what great people and turnover!!!! I was surprised when the sailor expert said douse the foresail and turn up winds in 30 knts to reef the main sail! (2:30) I would find that scary and the acceleration say going from broad reach to upwind overwhelming. I would want to hear about reefing the mainsail going downwind , a very important skill. ( if he assumed you were sailing upwind then maybe he was ok) And yes Holly the electronics as amazing as they are do leave me cold! Cheers Warren

Congrats for your beautiful videos and exciting boat. One question if I may: I have seen that you have chosen the genoa + staysail setup. Can you tack or gybe the genoa with the staysail installed on deck? Fair winds!

Thank you for watching. The staysail is on a hook so it’s easy to remove the head stay, which makes it easy to tack or gib the genoa. If you wanted to wanted to do maneuvers with the head stay up, you would need to furl and then unfurl the genoa to preserve the sail.

Great video! Would you be able to explain a little bit more how the Octopus weather routing differs from others like PredictWind Offshore for example? Just curious if there's a better mouse trap and what sets this software apart. Also, can you use it on your phone too?
