This program was born of a desire to honor all parts of one’s self.
Within each of us lies the capacity for both creation and destruction. Love and loss can coexist, and we can live without the burden of regret. Anger and joy can go hand in hand. While strength can be discovered through unity, there is also an inherent power in solitude.
Each of us has encountered moments when we've felt dismissed or ostracized for some part of ourselves. If you haven't experienced it yet, that moment will come. When it does, and someone or something challenges your identity, we hope you'll remember this: your life is a glorious series of contradictions, entirely your own. You owe no one an explanation for embracing all that you are, nor are you obligated to conform to someone else's perception of you. This life - and your self - is uniquely yours.
- About Sziréndal -
Founded in the fall of 2020 with only 15 students; our advanced treble ensemble, Sziréndal, is now home to 52 highly-qualified singers. Our name is the Hungarian for 'siren song,' and was chosen in honor of the Hungarian Kodály philosophy. The life and works of renowned composer, educator, and musicologist Zoltán Kodály inspire Sziréndal to reach the highest levels of musicianship and performance in choral singing. Admission to Sziréndal is based on audition, and is open to treble voice students in all grades who commit to year-long enrollment and participation.
Now in their fourth year of existence, Sziréndal has been selected for performance at the annual conferences of both SCACDA and SCMEA (February 2024). Since their inception, Sziréndal has exclusively received superior ratings in adjudicated settings. In April 2023, the ensemble was awarded Gold for the highest overall score in the Grade 5/6 Treble Division at Palmetto State Choral Festival, sponsored by SC ACDA. In March 2023, Sziréndal was awarded a rating of Superior with Distinction at SCMEA Choral Performance Assessment. In April 2022, they were awarded Best-in-Class in the High School Treble Division at Festival Disney in Walt Disney World, as well as a Superior rating at SCMEA Choral Performance Assessment: these events, only one day apart, were the ensemble's first foray into live adjudication.
In October 2020, Sziréndal was selected for Grammy Music Educator Award Nominee Chris Maunu's World Premiere Consortium of his work 'Remember.' In the spring of 2021, and as a part of their first-ever adjudicated event, they received a Superior rating at SCMEA Solo & Ensemble Festival (Virtual). Members of Sziréndal have been accepted to South Carolina All-State Chorus, Berkeley All-County Chorus, the honor choirs of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), and the national choirs of the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE).
