Could you imagine a modern day dedicated anti-armour tracked vehicle that could fire ATGM's! It could even carry extra troops to screen the tanks and have a small canon for close in fighting. Oh wait, we have the Bradley and every country has theirs version. :-)

@@wapniak666 They're of historical value, whether you like what flag they fought under or not. I'd be saying the same thing about a country pointlessly destroying Soviet, Japanese, UK, or French 1940's era vehicles even though two out of four of those were just as monstrous and despicable as the German government of that time. It's beyond stupid to test out ATGM's on a vehicle with paper thin armor compared to what you would have been facing anyways. They would have had more than enough broken down and disabled post war Soviet equipment they could have tested it on but the Soviets were so paranoid about stockpiling every vehicle they ever made in case it had some kind of use down the road..kinda like how they took the turrets off of T-34-85's and made pillboxes out of them along their border with China.

Great video. Just to add: whole electronic equipment for guidance waith was half of ton. The name of the missle is given as code (Draco was 1st legislator from Athens in Ancient Greece). Afther this, USSR tested also few more missle tanks. The most famus one was Object 775. It was made on the chassis of T-64. As you all know Soviets tanks has low silyete as protetive measure ( - smaller target). It was the main reason od the failure of the that project - it's missle louncher is looking as cannon.

Damn, this vehicle gives me flashbacks to War Thunder. When the IS6 came out it was near indestructible at its rank, then the IT1 came out and was near indestructible at its rank and both vehicles could destroy pretty much anything you´d throw at them. When I finally got them, they faced the same problems as the Jagdttiger and all the other fancy vehicles I unlocked: they were all one-shot killed by APFSDS or HEAT-ATGMs which were introduced by a later update...

Now: The principle is that a tanks gun kills tanks primarily with the speed of the projectile! But due to the sound barrier there is a definate range to that (say about 7-800 m) which is also the distance where you can use direct fire. Guided missiles have a minimum range of around said distance - thing has to leave the tube, gather to line of sight, etc. The target will have moved and you need to have the guidance system to correct for that - leaving out a lot of the guesswork in tank gunnery. On the shorter ranges the speed of the projectile and the flat trajectory does not leave the target time to do very much. In a brawl you need BOTH. You can of course have units with a mixture of both. But my preference is to have the tank in tank units and ATGM in their units. This means that I prefer mounting the ATGM on the Infantry combat vehicle - OK with a limited number of missiles - 30 missiles pr. vehicle seems to be overstocking. If you need more for the next day or so - it is probably better to have them flown in with a tactical transport. The primary protection of the infantry against tanks close in is in the dismounts. But the real tank killer is to have the tanks come into the fight when things get close and dirty. As You might understand: I think combined arms is the idea: Cavalry, Artillery AND Infantry. One should note that tanks is the CHEAP part of the solution, because a tank has a crew of 3-4 and an infantry combat vehicle has about 9-11 - and what costs money is the pay for the troops (and their training). It is a grave mistake to assume that infantry is the cheap part - it isn't. The figures I've seen (quite some years back now) was that a squdrons (company) of tanks was about 2/3 of the price of a company of infantry. For compareable protection and mobility. Another misconception is that conscripts are cheap - they are not. The time in basic training is wasted after 2 years. And the basic training takes a year - and then in practise thrown away. Basic training of less than a year is basically a waste of time and money, because in a real fight undertrained personel gets killed - fast and achieve nothing.

ATGM is a weapon that needs to be reinvented, as all APS on the market like ADS Rheinmetall, Iron Fist Elbit, Teopht Rafael when installed on MBTs make the missiles ineffective. Only 120mm APFSDS round fired by another MBT can be effective against APS.

West Germany fielded the Kanonenjagdpanzer and Jaguar 2. Italy still has the Centauro in service. Japan fielded the Type 60 Self Propelled 106mm Recoiless Rifle. The M50 Ontos and M56 Scorpion were originally designed and fielded as tank destroyers. There are the various variants of the Humvee that carry the BGM-71 TOW variant since the Cold War. There is the M901 ITV with the M220 TOW launcher. And then, the USSR fielded the subject of this video, the IT-1. And those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. This is the direction I expect the tank destroyer concept will continue to go. ATGMs make more sense than a massive gun if your only purpose is to destroy tanks. A cannon is more versatile but tank destroyers were never meant to be versatile.

LeOn Mk Actually no. The T114 was way smaller, and was parachute droppable. The M113 wasn’t. Plus, the T114 didn’t last in the BAT variant. They were converted to troop carriers, and were dropped from service shortly after arriving in Vietnam

Tank destroyers and light tanks are pretty much the same in modern times. For example, the Russian 2S25 Sprut-SD can be referred to as either a light tank or a tank destroyer.

Let's be honest, hundreds of military programs are doomed to fail in any military around the world. But what these programs do help with is advancing specific components and technologies which, even though the program that wanted to use this technology was doomed to fail, the lessons learned and the time and money spent proving the effectiveness of some of these systems is priceless as this weapon's system did for the entire Soviet ATGM post designs and weapons.

it wasnt possible for this time also you need a new fcs computer. you can't just load a missile. The FCS is visible on the T55AM top side of the barrel.. looks like a box

It was a political decision. Khrushchev thought that missiles would solve ALL problems. Unfortunately, he was an uneducated idiot who actually started a war between factions in the government (which led in many ways to the collapse of the USSR) and was deposed. Many promising projects were buried along with it.

It's funny to see when at the time atgms was considered even more powerful than tank canons(when apfsds weren’t invented yet?) and the soviet pancake was designed as a TD with a 180mm missile. It's the wonky interim period between ww2 and the early cold wars where we find these soviet gems

APFSDS came into service in the very late 70's when the west learned the Russians where using a lot of composite and reactive armour on the T-72 and T-80 tanks making HEAT shells far less effective. APDS development stopped in the late 1950's when large 105mm HEAT shells where found to be amazingly effective against steel armour. There was a 15 year gap between the last APDS entering service for the 105mm and development starting for the first APFSDS for the 105mm gun. Edit You will find mention of the US issuing the M728 APDS in the early 70's but that is a US built version of the British L52 that entered service in the early 1960's and that entered development in 1958.

Maybe in real world applications not so practical. But in Armoured Warfare, it's absolutely brilliant the missiles can turn 90 degrees. An my hit ratio is at least 90%. An get hit buy this missile an your day is done. An the loading is so cool !!. Luv this thing. Aussie Scott.

Since You are on the topic: There should be a couple of German vehicles - from the same periond - in the category that might be interesting to look at: Kanonenjagdpanzer en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanonenjagdpanzer Where the idea was to take the BK90/L40 gun from the M47 Patton (must have had lots of ammo lying around) - get rid of the ruddy turret and save 40% of the weight. Putting a decent engine into it and double the speed. Third property was reducing hight relative to the tank solution - Leopard 1 - with 17% (1/3 with repect to the Patton). Problem was that with the T64 coming on line the 90 mm gun just did not cut it. That led to the Raketjagdpanzer 2 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raketenjagdpanzer_2 Which used missiles to hit at long range. The idea in itself is not a bad one: They are easy to hide, have great tactical mobility and are cheap to build and operate.

The missile flying to it's target is kinda surreal. You are watching death approaching the enemy. With bullets they are too fast without tracers to see.

That canon was supposed to have at least two types of anti tank rounds. The missile just makes it easier to blow itself up. Shoot the missile, and the tank either explodes or catches fire.
