I don't know about TW vs US. I learned the first method (FOIL) thirty years ago when I first got into quadratic equations in the USA. I also had some reference TW books at the time, which were similar to what was taught here in the late 80s. Once I learned the proof for the quadratic formula, all the properties I learned about quadratic equations became obsolete, unfortunately. Perhaps, things have changed nowadays.
I prefer method 3. The only method without trial and error! The students who learn this are ALL the beginner, they are not familiar to get the answer in first trial, 4x^2 can be factorised as x(4x) or 2x(2x) and -6 can be 1(-6) or -1(6) or 2(-3) or -2(3), so altogether 8 combinations! Why it is weird to divide by 4? It is because at first you take the -6 multiply by 4, that’s why you have to divide by 4 later. Just like you borrow something to help you to start the move, once you have done you have to return it! It’s a very simple theory to be understand by the BEGINNERS! All my students love the method I have been teaching for the past 20+ years.
