So, you passed your Motorcycle Safety Foundation riding course. Now what? Taking your new bike out on the street is not the same as riding around a vacant parking lot. I give you some pointers for your maiden ride as a newly endorsed rider.

I passed my course today. Never ridden and it was my first time on a motorcycle. I found the instructions to be very helpful! “Eyes up!” The hardest for me were the slowww cone weaves and that damn sharp turn. Other than that I got the hang of everything. Good luck to all!

Congrats to you!! The sharp turn is a tough one, for sure, and I find I use it a lot when making U-turns on smaller streets. Not super common, but glad I have it down when I need it. And yes, good luck to all riders on your course, and on the road!

Great video! I'll be taking my riding course at the Harley-Davidson dealership here in College Station, Texas. I already passed my on line course, so I'm excited. Then my wife's cousin's husband is going to lend me his Honda Trail 90 to practice on here in Brenham, TX where I live, can't wait.

I just passed my course today! I have a 1985 Kawasaki ZN700 LTD and i’m nervous about riding a bigger bike on the main roads but I really wanna take it for a ride now that the weather is better! Great video!

Edit: I just took a 15 minute spin and stalled at two stop lights. My bike feels a lot heavier than the ones at the MSF course and taking off felt so much more difficult! Any tips?

Take some time in a flat spot (probably not in your driveway or street) and work on your friction zone. It's going to be different than the bike you learned on. Let that clutch out slowly and see where it starts to engage (move the bike forward). Another pointer is be careful on stopping when you stop at an intersection where you plan to turn. If the bike feels heavy, you can get caught leaning at a stop and the bike's going to want to tip over. Make sure at those stops you keep your handlebars straight. That's all I've got for you now. Keep practicing. Get used to the weight of that bike and have fun!

The oy thing I'm really worried about is coming to a stop from higher gears as in (atleast the class i went through) the class we didn't get over second gear and he wanted us to stay in 1st when coming to a stop

Definitely something to get used to once you're out on the street is downshifting and engine braking. I'd suggest getting some time in on residential streets and empty parking lots until you get the hang of it.

Last day of my MSF course tomorrow. I haven't done great so far. Especially stalling constantly. I also worry about riding once I get my license cus I live on a steep hill on a busy road. So to get to a calm area or parking lot is gonna take some dangerous (to me) driving. I am determined to do it though.

Gray_Fox459 I hope your lay day went well! The stalling just takes practice. That’s something you’ll have to get used to all over again when you get your first bike, as the clutch is a little different on every motorcycle. The trick is to let it out gradually and give it an even amount of throttle at the same time. As, I’m sure you’ve noticed letting it out all at once or giving it too much throttle are both recipes for a stall. There are some good videos on starting from an incline. That’s another thing you’ll just need to practice. I’d get comfortable on flat ground first and work your way up to it. Best of luck to you! Your determination is going to be key! 🤓👍🏽

I just completed (and barely passed) my MSF Course yesterday. I have a Honda Shadow 750 (I'm 5'10 250lbs so I needed something a tad bigger). I also live on a steep hill. I'm actually gonna walk my bike down to the road a few times until I feel more confident with my bike. I also intend to take the course again after I have had shone saddle time. I was soooooo nervous in the class. I couldn't get out of my own head. So thankfully I will be practicing in my quiet neighborhood for a while.

@@Muppetfanforevah I'm in a similar situation as you. I have gone and bought myself a used Honda Shadow Spirit 750, live in a hilly neighborhood and yet to pass my MSF course skills test. Must admit I failed the skills test the first time. So planning on taking it slow once I pass the MSF course and get comfortable with my Shadow riding on the level street in front of my house, before braving the steeper hilly roads in my neighborhood. Ride safe!!👍

Seems so basic and that is the point. I find myself going to the basics after not riding for awhile. I still so parking lot maneuvers since going slow is much harder then going fast.

Absolutely. Most of my close calls have been in parking lots. Some unforced errors and some just people not paying attention.

Passing the course eliminates the need to take the DMV’s riding test. You just need to take the written test and you’re done. 👍🏽
