I think it was in 1969, I attended concert of him at Sri Rama Yagya Mandali, behind Nageswara Rao Pantulu Park, in Luz , Mylapore. He started his concert at 7 pm with Begada Raaga varnam which was played for nearly an hour, followed by Shankarabharanam, as main Raagam lasted for 11/2 hours , followed with this Patnam Subramani Iyer keerthanai & the notations were superb He was accompanied by Dwaram Mangathayaaru in violin .Exchange of notation between them was unassuming & lasted for one hour. By the time he concluded the concert it was 4 am next day. I went to the kutcheri without having my dinner .During his recital we.forgot our hunger & absorbed in his divine performance. In those days there were no buses in early mornings & we had to walk back to Westmambalam where we were residing. This is still an unforgettable experience. Mali was born genius. Unfortunately he was addicted to liquor & died at the of 60. Even he consumed liquor & played the flute there would never be Nadaswaram or deviation He was genius even intoxicated & made us intoxicated with his brilliant music I was fortunate.to have attended a few concerts in Vanimahal T.Nagar, Venus colony Alwarpet etc.

No one rendered Ragas as captivating as he did.. He was able to fill so much life in to sangathis, that he sets a bar that will take generations to even think of reaching...that bar.
There is one and only Mali in this universe. Born genius. Thanks for offering this.-- ROCKFORT MURALI

This is from a concert in Los Angeles, arranged by L. Subramanian who is also the violinist here. The whole concert is commercially available in a set of CDs.

A man, a piece of hollow wood with holes in it, a genius to breathe in and breathe out through that using agile finger tips to open and close the stops, music as ancient as can be and a technique most modern like tomorrow: and get a piece of heavenly listening like this.

Normally Raghuvamsha is played in breadth neck speed with too hackneyed sangathis. Mali is always special. So divine. In the Anu pallavi he makes GA MA PA SA...Prayoga instead of Ga Pa Sa .
