I distinctly remember being 3 or 4 years old when juice boxes got smaller. I had one of those hard plastic juice box holders (that keeps kids from accidentally squeezing the juice out) and that my juice box always fit perfectly inside of it. The weight used to be very obvious, on the TOP of the packet (e.g. butter, flour, bread). Now they've started putting the weight of items on the BOTTOM of the box, so it's the same size box, so it *LOOKS* the same but it *HIDES* the fact that it has less inside.

I stocked shelves in a major supermarket from 2009 to 2019 and can tell you shrinking product is far from a new thing. I remember when sugar went from a 5lb bag to a 4lb bag but the price stayed the same. Cereal, cake mix, flour, pudding, dressing, mayo, yogurt, chips, granola bars, pickles, pasta, tomato sauce, paper towels, garbage bags, cookies, detergents... you name it and the size has progressively gotten smaller over the years. Then they release some "family" or "party" size which was the original size at a higher price. The packaging usually stays the same size but the weight changes.

I noticed the ‘Shrinkflation’ trend in South Africa in the mid 1980’s. It is not only the volume or weight they manipulate but also the product itself. I noticed the density of paper used for tissues and toilet paper was tampered with. Tissues today are almost translucent and single ply toilet paper is literally so thin you are better off buying 2 ply paper at the outset. Another factor which also became prevalent in the 80’s was ‘built in’ obsolescence. The oft repeated lament that ‘things aren’t built as well as they used to be’ is as a direct result of this practice.

20 years ago, I managed a deli where, weekly, I bought cases of single-serve Lay’s potato chips at wholesale pricing, 35 cents a bag. Over a three year period, I watched the ounce weight drop from 1 ounce to 3/4 ounce to 1/2 ounce, no change in my cost. The big problem with public hearings is they'll point to low ratings as "no one cares" but reality is, a lot of us just want to get it summarized and MAYBE get a grain of dark humor with it. The first time I noticed it was in 2003 or so. Bought a bar of Safeguard soap that was advertised with a "New easier to hold shape". All they did was make the sides concave. I had an unopened box still from before and it went from something like 6 oz to 5 oz. Just Googled it and I see it is now down to 4oz/bar. Of course the price didn't drop. It probably actually went up too.

It kind of always been there... Because it's an available tactics. Coffee bags used to be a pound. Since the 1980s, they are often 400 grams. If you go back to the 1950s, you would have been able to find cans of 5 pounds of coffee: today, it's difficult to find can bigger than 950 grams - maybe you can find one of these rebates thing by buying 5 cans of folgers of 750 grams. The alternatives are: 1. Having less pure coffee, such as that East German ersatz kaffee mix. So basically something like 50% coffee and 50% postum or equivalent cereal based drink. Yes, that's 50% coffee in your coffee... That actually brought riots in 1977 and pushed the East-German government to review their import policies to allow more trade with Vietnam, including things like tractors and mechanical tools. You read that right, somehow coffee crisis in East Germany opened trade with Vietnam and even helped Vietnam to get more mechanized. The communist feared coffee drinkers so much that they changed policies in such a way that it had important geopolitical implications in Asia. This is not a joke, albeit there is something funny here. 2. Increase the price directly which might looks bad to some customers who don't look at complete information given that 50 grams might not be looks like a huge difference at first...

Back when there were actual people answering customer service questions regarding products, I called Tampax to complain they had reduced their box size from 40 to 32.
