I really don't get the, "He probably learned his lesson and won't do it again" sentiment from Senators Collins and Alexander. I've certainly never seen someone in a criminal case acquitted of a felony because the jury felt he probably wouldn't do it again. What kind of legal reasoning is that? He either did it or he didn't. At least Romney had the guts to say he did it.

The worst part is, even if he does do it again and gets caught again, do we think the *next* trial will be any different? While I disagree with Mitt Romney on many things, that moment when he went silent out of the overwhelming emotion he felt speaking of his oath to God was indeed a drink of water in the desert. His nobility showed through at that moment. His manhood showed through at that moment. His love of country shone at that moment. I cannot thank Stephen enough for the quote from A Man for All Seasons. I would hold the image of holding yourself in your own hands like water when taking an oath. But in my defense, I’m the kind of conservative that believes in smaller govt interference and tax cuts for the low- and middle-class...that’s what conservatives used to believe. That’s why I’ll be voting for Bernie Sanders this year, ‘cause my Party has let me down...and Bernie’s been preaching the same things he preached when I first heard him speak in 1992, looking out for the little guy/girl.

wwagner07 Yes, I detest as many republicans and I do democrats...but to say that they’re ALL bad is infantile, to speak in absolutes like that is either jaded or ignorant. And if you seriously think that our President asking TWO foreign powers to interfere in our Presidential elections isn’t that bad...you need to go and read our Constitution again, ‘cause that’s one of the reasons that our forefathers implemented impeachment, and the co-equal powers, to ensure that our President didn’t become a dictator...and each co-equal power is supposed to guard their own power, not succumb to another and relinquish their power to them...which is what Mitch McConnell’s been doing for the last year.

@@SeanShimamoto every president does bad things, its the good that you have to take into account. and also all he did was say to Ukraine that joe biden was up to shady stuff. was he? yes. other then that all this quid pro quo is blown out of proportion. trump is arguably one of the best presidents when you take into account how much he was able to do in just one term. this impeachment was the democrats last shot to win in the next election, its the impeachment thats corrupt, not trump. but, trump is also corrupt. see how that works? politics is a corrupt business but as long as americans are benefiting (which they are rn) then im ok with it. america is doing pretty fantastic other then the divide between dems and rebubs, but then again what else is new.

@SeanShimamoto 4 жыл бұрын
wwagner07 OMG, you need to read our Constitution again...or maybe for the first time. There is soooo much wrong with your comment that it would take me 20 minutes to post them all out. I’ve been a proud Republican since the Reagan Administration, but I have been totally and utterly disgusted by my party these last 3 years. Just as ONE example of his corrupt and disgusting nature is his proposed budget...he’a slashing social security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, and increasing the pentagon’s budget. I don’t know about you but I have old relatives who rely on those services after pouring tons of money into them over the course of 4-5 decades...and now when they’re supposed to be reaping the benefits of those programs, they’re not! Then there’s the 1.3 TRILLION DOLLAR tax cuts he gave to HIMSELF and his ULTRA RICH FRIENDS...their taxes went from 35% to 21%!!! That’s less than what we pay! Conservatism is supposed to be about tax cuts for the middle-class. And before you go on about that bull$hit trickle down crap...even the GOP admitted that it doesn’t work! So you can go on believing that he’s a great president, but unless you’re White (which you obviously are), a male, and straight...Trump is NOT gonna be working on your best interest. Trump is a sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, islamaphobic, LIAR who’s cheated on ALL 3 OF HIS WIVES (the most recent WHEN SHE WAS PREGNANT!) and I find him to be the most repulsive, and CORRUPT, man who’s ever worked in the Oval Office.

Romney's vote is the perfect example of what values and ethics mean. These two concepts are real only when there is risk to the person who is adhering to them. Without that risk they are nothing more than empty phrases. Most times these two concepts are considered noble but they are really quite scary because to actually adhere to them, you may have to risk quite a bit.

He knows his constituents in Utah aren't huge fans of Trump, so he does this to throw them a bone and knows full well it won't lead to anything. If his vote was the deciding factor in this fiasco, it's far more likely that he would've abstained over anything else. All this shows is that there's a lot of gullible people out there willing to claim Mitt a member of the "resistance" when he's anything but. How is this Bolton's fault? He stated that he'd testify in the Senate. Every other impeachment (all two of them) the Senate *did* call witnesses. And in the case of Nixon, the investigations *started* in the Senate. The GOP senators voted that they *wished* to remain ignorant, and they *refused* to interview anyone under oath. That's where the problem is.
@hzuiel
@hzuiel 4 жыл бұрын
Did it ever occur to you that if Bolton can write a book about it, he could easily have testified in front of congress. A book is not sworn testimony under cross examination, he can say virtually anything in a book and get away with it. The more salacious, the more copies it sells. If he wanted the public to know what happened so bad, he could have volunteered to testify. He did not. His motives are pretty obvious, and this is from a man who has said he would gladly lie to the american public if he thought it was in their best interests, and a man the left hated right up until 5 seconds ago.

As someone who share's his faith, it's terrifying just how twisted people's morals have become to defend this man. Biblical even. So while I understand the cynicism, I think you should know, that vote and conviction were genuine. The same can't be said of Lee, who invited the defendant (Trump) to a pro-life rally he was holding, only to declare the President innocent immediately afterward. Good on you, Stephen Colbert for an outstandingly honest and heartfelt comment! And you, Mitt Romney for taking a solemn oath seriously and honestly. I'm not a religious person yet when I joined the Service, I took an oath that I still like to think I uphold even these 40-odd years later. Politicians, throughout the world are not known for excessive truth but here and now, in America, only one politician saying out loud that which the rest of the world knows to be the truth is a terrible, appalling situation for that great country I still admire. It's just their politics that have gone down the gurgler. An ignorant, partially self-confessed liar, sexist, racist person, of low character - compared to Romney - has tricked his way into the oval office and only one GOP member has the guts to say he should go. Shame. BH

Something I feel Donald was never taught as a child is "you don't reward bad behavior". And kudos to Romney, I think it takes great courage to "go against" your own party, even though it was the right thing to do here.

I'll give Romney some credit for being honest instead of continuing to ride the party, but I find it disturbing that he only seems to care about his oath being to God. Theocracy may have helped in action, but I would like to have senators care about their oath to serve the people they represent and the wellbeing of the country as a whole. Could a senator's conscious tell them to do the right thing without being held at hell-point?

@@Wordavee1 I remember a lot of kids in elementary school who were taught the same lessons. Whenever they were caught bullying, the teacher just made them say something nice about the kid they were bullying and then praised them for being funny and outgoing. Yeah, they sure learned a lot about not bullying there.

I almost cried watching Romney’s speech. It gives us hope that the whole world is not corrupt. I’ve already thanked him today but I’ll gladly do it everyday. Thank you, thank you, thank you Senator Romney. Please don’t go away.

As a Utahn I can confidently say he'll still get re-elected next election. Utah is a very red state but they're republican, not big trumpers. He was actually relatively poorly viewed in republican primaries and basically just won the election here by default of being republican. And people here love Romney. Also as many people know, Utah has a lot of Mormons. And the fact that Romney did what he did because he was honoring an oath he made to God, showing immense faith and devotion, is essentially viewed as him being a righteous person and doing the right thing. Plus Trump has only continued to make himself look worse, making Romney look more favorable. I'm confident Romney will not just win but win by a huge margin. He'll be a senator of Utah as long as he wants to be.

Romney's words carried more weight than either those of any Democrat or Republican. I salute his courage and applaud his conviction. He took both his oath as a Senator, oath as a Juror and responsibly as a leader whole heatedly. Too bad this strength of character isn't shared by all of those serving in Congress.
