Changing the chain and sprockets on my mates t140e, upto now I have found a couple of problems , a poor fitting alternator rotor and the clutch pushrod has been cut short.

Lunmad dammit, you've done it again!! I seriously cannot get enough of your videos. I recently picked up my first Triumph (1974 T140v) and by chance came across your channel. I just wanted to thank you for your time and effort you put into these. They really take the black magic and leprechaun dust out of it for me. You make it feel like Im hanging out with a friend wrenching in the garage. Cheers to you and to keeping these machines on the road

Hi Lunmad, I've had my T140E for 14yrs and as far as I know the Rotor is supposed to be that deep in the stator, something to do with moving the stator out to accommodate the upgrade to a triplex chain from the double. Great vids you are a great help to many Triumph Owners.

Hi craig a :-) yes you are correct, the position of the rotor in the stator makes little difference to charging but moving the rotor further out upsets the balance of the crank.

@pushur Hi pushur :-) thank you! yes them wire do look like an after thought, as long as the primary chain is kept tensioned they are usually ok. this does not help when the tensioner blade snaps though.

Hi Jeremy :-) glad to help, after you have ridden it a couple of times, you should re-torque the head especially if you have used the composite gasket. Your carburettors will also need a tweek, you are better with the tappets a little slack than tight but as long as you can feel a gap they should be ok. 5hrs very good talking to ones self helps loads '-) hope this helps cheers from Blighty

Great Vids! Love em I cringe every time i see the way they routed the alternator Wires I had the wires get shredded on a Nice Sparx unit. Routed the wires behind the chain instead of over That and i forgot to make sure the ties were tight Won't make that mistake again Looking forward to many more how to and How Not to Vids from you

Cheers Kelvin :-) thank you I try to tell it as it is. These things can be kept running and reliable just carrying out basic checks, the main one being engine oil level! Happy riding your fist Triumph keep the rubber side down. :-)

Champion! It is a great pleasure to follow your knowledge on the t140 ,you have a weath of teaching its fantastic. Just replace the head gasket on my T140 and followed every step ,even started to talk to my self and the machine, cool . but i must be missing some thing now it runs harch and will tick over ,could this be the tappet setting are out a smuge, they were a pain to feel 100% after 5hrs star to finsh. All the very est from Denmark

Hi Jeremy :-) It could be the needle position, if the symptom is hunting and spluttering try dropping the needles, If it spits back through the carb and splutters lift the needles, the std setting for the needle is in the centre groove. You should also check the timing, new valves and pistons will not effect the tappet settings and they should be set as per book.

So nice not to have to clean things to remove them eh? Great vid mate, did a turn down of a pushrod today as practice in lightening them.

@441rider Hi 441 :-) yes its a nice tidy one and it was fairly clean around the engine sprocket too! don't go too light on the pushrods or you will be forever replacing bent ones :-(

Hi Lunmad ! First of all, thank you so much for all your videos and for sharing your mechanic skills, this is highly appreciated ! I have a question : i need to change the gearbox sprocket on my 66 bonneville. May i ask what size is the wrench you are using to take the sprocket nut off ? I hope this will find you in good form. Best. Guillaume

Hi Ginger Bill :-) the T140 is a different size to the earlier T120 measuring across the flats the box spanner is one inch and eleven sixteenths, or 43mm I Hope this helps.

Thanks J, now its ticking over nice, but when you realy give some gaz it holds back after 50 mph ? but will potter and tick over fine , i fixed a copper gasket to the head and re tightend the head ,the engine sounds well smooth , the tppets are set after the book but some how i think there to tight , i had new vaves putin last year and new pistons +boring, could this make the tappet size diffrent . all the very best from Jeremy Denmark
