The bit that always gets me is how self-aware Begbie feels in this moment. He knows what he is, and he hates himself for it. He's felt insecure and out of place ever since primary school, and the only way he knows how to cope is through violence, even as it drives everyone he cares about away, including his own son. And he just.... he knows. But he also knows he can't change. The world has no place for "men like him" and it tears him apart. Deep down, he loved Mark in his own way, and craved his friendship, but he knows he doesn't deserve friends and that he drove Mark away through years of abuse. He also knows Mark managed to successfully rob him because he's smarter than him, and always has been smarter than him. Mark represents all of Begbies insecurities and failures, and I think on some level Begbie knows that isn't Marks fault, but he also can't cope with the pain of Mark existing. He's a symbol of everything Begbie could never be, and it kills him. He doesn't even hate Mark, he just hates how Mark makes him feel about himself.

@@richardlewis9099 good analysis. Begbie also feels so horrible about himself because he always knew none of them actually liked him, and were friends with him simply by virtue of the fact he was a dangerous psychopath feared in their community. As addicts they needed and tolerated him, but never really on any level felt him to be a friend. He was no one's friend and never could be. What I liked about the sequel was how it captured the nature, and reality, if getting older so well. We all change and mature, and what we value in life does aswell. When school friends reunite after decades all the silly one upmanship feuds largely seem not to matter anymore. The tragedy of everyone's life is wishing you could go back knowing what you know now

Yep. Begbie hurts people because he himself is wounded. Any further damage to his ego results in violence, his only coping mechanism and a very insufficient one at that. Mark addresses this in the first movie…begbie didn’t do drugs, he did people.

Yeah, I think he made his mind up 20 years ago and nobody could have changed it. He would have been fantasizing how to kill him for what would have felt like an eternity to him, but ultimately when it was happening he didn't want him to suffer. Maybe because he was just reminded of their childhood friendship. It also looks like he's holding him as well as helping him on his way. Pressing his head against his childhood friend in his last moments. His mind wasn't in the room as he is showing his way of "kindness" he was completely lost in the moment and luckily caught off guard.

It was so touching to see Sickboy saving Renton. After everything Renton did and said about him in the first film...Mark was wrong because Simon truly cared about him and thought he was was his best friend and never gave up that thought. I'm so grateful to have been alive to see this resolution 20 years later.

No. Sick Boy didnt care for Renton at all during the first film atleast. But during the second one where they had aged and grown a least a little bit wiser, they realized and remembered the time when the were young and hadnt fallen into addiction and actually loved each other. And after that they actually grew to respect one another once again. Thats how i interpreted it. Its different in the novels though, there Both Renton and Sick boy deep down despise one another. They were best friends once when they were younger but during both the trainspotting novel and the sequel, they deep down despise each other.

Remembering watching this in the cinema and someone laughed when Renton said "You'd been held back Frank." Frank has dyslexia (so does Irvine Welsh) and so do I was held back in nursery because I wasn't "emotionally ready" they didn't know I was dyslexic yet. It doesn't matter how many qualifications you get when you hear someone laughing at you or someone else about dyslexia or any other neuro-divergence it still makes me really angry. For a film to make you feel that and the books even more especially The Blade Artist is phenomenal. I hope they develop an adaptation of The Blade Artist because it's an amazing book and really develops on why Franco became what he became.

Not a lot of people know it, but when Robert Carlyle read the screenplay. He actually cried at the end, and I'm not surprised. When Mark (Ewan McGregor) is choking you see Begbie (Robert) tearing up. You feel Begbie still loves Mark as he used to, but being the psychopath he is...He still wants Mark to pay. I wonder if Begbie tearing up is not the character but the actor instead, to me it's a heart breaking moment and (for me) will go down in one of the best scenes in cinema history.

@@martincurran6432 He's not crying but he is giving an expression of "God this is terrible, I don't want to watch this", another reason why he grabs Mark by the legs is because he probably can't watch him die, so he's in a position where he won't have to.

@@rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168 well that's your interpretation. He looks calm like he's at peace. If he didn't want Mark to die why was he trying to kill him then?

@@martincurran6432 Wanting Mark to die and not wanting to watch him die were desires that I feel Begbie had at the same time. He wanted to kill Mark but he didn't want it to be slow. He wanted to speed it up and be in a position where he wouldn't have to directly watch him suffer. Begbie is a psychopath obsessed with revenge but he is not a sadist, at least not in this instance. He even gave Mark the opportunity to take him on in a fair fight at first, then after he got sprayed went to get a shotgun to just shoot Mark (and Sick Boy) dead, out of desperation and as a last resort but still not a method of killing that would be slow and painful.

@@rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168 yeah I get what you mean. He wanted Renton dead but not to suffer unnecessarily. I think he 100% wanted him to die though. Thing is would Begbie holding him down kill him quicker or would it just make it more painful?

I liked that he's still faithful to black shoes & white socks combo. A nod to the original.
