I assume the difference is that pros only do it once they have to in order to stay efficient. Most noobs cut them straight away while pros usually only do it once they place farms while only cutting the once absolutely in the way

I mean he said it. The vills were created to farm. But MBL had no wood for the farms. So insted of of having your vills idle, they could chop TREES at the same spot they wold have a farm, so its really 2flys at one hit. Or even more. You dont have idle vills, you get your wood faster, and you get rid of the trees blocking your farms. And the vills didnt had to move a tile.

It's kind of wacky, but I've done it myself to good effect. Granted, I did it in a team game on black forest where I was playing pocket, and I waited for the gold to be used up on the map before castle walling the choke points. I then used my remaining gold to buy food and wood and I just trash countered until the enemy couldn't continue.

I feel like the triple castle wall was a great way to say "fight me here" - It forces that full game-deciding engagement. It's a great way to cut down on the time of a game - Without that, this could've stalled for probably another 10 minutes. And he likely knew that at that point, he was ahead, so why not just say "bleep it, let's force the final fight right now."

Maybe this is just because I'm a noob, but that building push seemed like a legitimate strategy. Castles and Bombard Towers don't take up pop-cap. and MbL was close to popcap. He invested a ton of resources into it, but when you're that far ahead, it's worth the resources to force your opponent to invest into countering all your buildings instead of your army. Also, buying all that stone meant that his opponent couldn't buy the stone for a replacement castle. Truely a 4D-Chess moment

A few days ago I discovered by accident that the DE edition of AoE2 was released and nostalgia hit me so hard! I've been playing a lot the past few days and for the first time I'm actually learning some proper gameplays like build orders, which were simply beyond me as a kid. Your vids have actually helped me a great deal! Especially loving the Low Elo casts! Pros leave me in awe of their skill, so much so that the constant screen movement makes me dizzy..! It was crossed by invaders twice, one time invasion was unsuccesfull, second time, it was the Mongols, and they were allowed to pass, by the people who guarded the wall. Walls work. If they are properly manned, and there are no traitors that would let people thru. Even Theodosian walls, when taken by the ottomans, required a traitor inside to open one of the gates, for the Turks to take them down. Properly defended and supplied fortification, is impossible to take, without huge losses, and at least some technological advantage. Even in World War II, there were fortifications, that withstood months of artillery barrages. Some even were not taken at all, like Leningrad and Moscow.

Its so wild how AoE2 gameplay has evolved. It used to be about building the magic fucking kingdom or some replica city and then "doing battle" because rushing was in poor taste.
