I remembered using this SAR-80 during my national service in 2003, heavy weapon to carry and very bulky and old fashioned.

Thanks for sharing some insight! Did you ever see the SAR 21?
@joshlim65232 жыл бұрын
I thought the sar 21 was a decent gun. Being a conscript, i had no experience of shooting firearms but still managed to get a marksman score for my first live firing. It's relatively user friendly due to good centre of gravity, integrated optic & lazer(factory zeroed), and simple disassembly/reassembly. Simple to use, but i can see why its features may not be to eveyone's liking.

I carried M16SG ,SAR 80 , 21 , SAW , matador in my whole NS career , only did not fire M203 or threw a grenade before

Gotta love that Sterling ‘crackle finish’ I’ve liked the SAR-80 ever since I saw it in the 1986 book ‘world military weapons’ which used the same pic as seen at 1:42 I must say, the plastic furniture doesn’t look terribly durable, what did it feel like?
@TheArmourersBench4 жыл бұрын
The crackle is king, feels very nice. The handguards didn't feel too back, not sure how it would stand up to field use but it wasn't thin, brittle stuff and it has a heat shield inside so quite rigid. The factory brochure's have some M16 comparisons (twitter.com/historicfirearm/status/1225111177644183553?s=20) which are a bit too favourable if you know what I mean. Thanks for watching and always jumping in with a comment Matt :).

Great video! Was just at Battlefield Vegas a month back and fired it! Jammed a lot. Guess that's due to age, but anecdotally I have heard it always had jamming problems from the beginning..

I wish I'd had a chance to shoot it too, but a few other things were calling me haha. Thanks for watching.

As a Singaporean, I'd take this rifle over the SAR-21 bullpup any day. Lighter and more ergonomic, uses STANAG 4179 magazines which can be shared in the infantry section.

Nice video, the Singaporean guns are so often overloooked ..

The SAR-80 design was acquired by CIS as they had an entire turnkey M-16 rifle factory sitting idle - once they finished the M-16S1 production run for the Singapore Army Colt refused to grant CIS a license to export M-16s in the region, which is why they acquired the rights to produce the SAR-80. In the Singapore Army it was only issued to second-line units. Front line units stuck with the M-16S1 until the SAR-21 replaced them.

Would be interesting to how this rifle compares to L85 rifle as it is also a British design
@TheArmourersBench4 жыл бұрын
This is undoubtedly simpler but both are stamped and use the same gas system and bolt layout. The SAR 80's trigger is probably better too!
@BlokeontheRange2 жыл бұрын
@@TheArmourersBench Gas system is totally different, and is backasswards compared to the SA80: it's quite a clever system with a stationary cylinder and moving piston, whereas the SA80 has a stationary piston and moving cylinder closer to the original AR18.

@pajamalama20274 жыл бұрын
@@TheArmourersBench it was alright to kill people with but we kept getting in trouble because it's so hard to clean.....no matter how clean you get it the sergeant would stick his finger in and come out black
@Alen7253 жыл бұрын
@@pajamalama2027 Hahahah that edgy "it was alright to kill people with" made me laugh. You were mandatory draft, did nothing basically. And that "stick his finger in and come out black", you didnt even learn to clean your rifle? Its not accumulating dirt more than anything, you were just useless conscript and they kept you busy with something like cleaning rifle constantly.

I’ve been seeing them come into the US as parts kits. If they are as simple as you say they are, I hope some manufacturer(s) will make some for the US market. AR15 rifles are so boring and common here, we need something else.

Seeing the insides is a big deal. It would sure be more meaningful and complete if you were able to disassemble and photograph or film the internal mechanisms and components. This was a great overview, thank you!

I agree, I wish it was always possible/practical to disassemble. Thanks for watching.

Considering it's largely based on the AR18/180 - it should be pretty straight forward. But yeah, interior images are always enjoyed.

Why would you pick this over an AR 15?
@matthewkriebel73424 жыл бұрын
When this gun came out, only Colt could make AR-15s, they were expensive, and Colt had to obey ITAR, or whatever similar restrictions were in place.
@skepticalbadger4 жыл бұрын
You wouldn't. Hence it failed.

@@matthewkriebel7342 - Yes, CIS attempted to cheat by shipping the M16S to other countries. Neither Colt nor the US State Department were amused.
@someduckwithanultimax65494 жыл бұрын
Two reasons: it’s a hell of a lot cheaper (especially in the early 1980s) and secondly cause Colt wouldn’t let you make AR-15s for export.
